The Get Home Bag

  • We all know it's important to be prepared. Many of us have a bugout bag but how many of us have one with us everywhere we go? Probably not too many. Keeping a ready kit in your vehicle is a great thing to have to help get you home in an emergency. Keep in mind, this isn't a "bugout or go bag" this is a kit designed to help you survive for a few days while you make your way home. Don't get carried away on one aspect and forget others. You just want a nice balance of fire, water, security, and shelter items. Don't forget maps too. We are making the assumption that cell service is out or unreliable.

    i have watched hundreds of videos of get home and bug out bugs, and what surprises me the most is people do not include socks, most of them, in their bags !!!!!!!!!!!!! At least that guy did !!!!!!! Someone is smarter than others !!!!

      So right. On one of my practice runs on a cold, rainy, puddly day I had to stop by a military surplus store mid-trek to pick up wool socks I knew they had there. I had zero socks in my bag. 😄 I own many light and heavy ones now for the rotational seasonal switch outs.

    If there's MOLLE webbing on the bottom of the pack you could sinch your blanket in a bedroll and tie it to the bottom. May give you a little more real estate in the main compartment

    Everybody always says spend the money to get a good this or a good that but if you dont have the money to buy expensive brands you dont need to. I have used and owned some pretty decent flashlights and i always go back to my cheap $5 hardware store flashlight that ive had for ten years. Buy quality but it doesnt need to be name brand to be the best

    • @triggerhappyreviews
      @triggerhappyreviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not saying you need to buy the most expensive of everything to get the best. Some things have a great value at a lower price. The only exception is the bag itself. Cheap bags are usually garbage.

      Take this for what it is. I have carried a Stream light stinger with me every night at work for the last seven years. I have dropped it, throw it and just about anything else you can imagine this little thing had been through. It still works excellent and has never failed me once. You think buying the cheap stuff is ok but the time you need it and it doesn't work you'll be kicking yourself. It's kinda like a tourniquet. Everyone says they're to expensive. Personally I am willing to spend $30.00 dollars to be able to stop myself from bleeding out. I'd hate to be that guy who is bleeding and says, "Man, I wish I had a tourniquet." Buy it once, take care of your investment and it will last.

    • @Martyntd5
      @Martyntd5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Dash 42 What kind of injury are you imagining that results in you bleeding out? Do you know how many people die each year from bleeding out? Of those that have, how many do you think could have saved their own lives by applying a tourniquet? Have you ever heard a genuine account of someone actually successfully self-treating a severed artery? It's just not realistic is any measure.
      Risk assessment is the key skill, not listing random hypotheticals. You cant prepare for every random possibility. You are more likely to be disabled by blistered feet than a severed artery, by a ratio of about 200,000:1. You'd be better off spending that $30.00 on a good pair of socks.

    I have a smaller bag as a 15-20min ride to work on my motorbike is an hour walk. All it has is clothing according to weather, pepper spray, battery bank, energy bar,water, torch, first aid. which I always carry. When my bike got damage from an attempt theft I was able to get home warm without carrying my heavy clunky gear all warm and safe. All i thought it, what would i need to get home safe and sound after a nightshift on foot if I was tired at 3-4am. No one wants to be robbed, no one wants to be shivering cold, no one wants to spend more than they have to for traveling. If you're willing its not a bad idea to set up something to get home. You might not always be able to call for a taxi.

    I have found that military rucksacks remain durable over time. Moll 2 with sustainment pouches ( water bottled, food ) work well and hold up during and after hard use. Sleep gear can be attached to bottom of the pack and more gear stowed on top with straps.

    I like how you have that klean kanteen set up on the side. I would suggest doing the same on the other side. in the space left over, you could expand your water filtration abilities, add some extra food, keep a rain cover handy, pack a small boo boo kit, or carry your fire kit. having the extra water would be worth it by its self.

  • @ldsnurse9268
    @ldsnurse9268 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice set-up. Lots of great gear.
    I, too, use the ‘Falcon 2’ as my GHB, along with the Maxpedition ‘4x10 Bottle Holder’, ‘FR-1 Medical Pouch’ and ‘Mini Roly-Poly’ dump pouch.
    Like you, I carry a Sawyer ‘Mini’ water filter, and 40oz Klean Kanteen bottle - but instead of storing a GI canteen cup elsewhere in my pack, I opted for a GSI ‘Glacier’ cup that nests over the bottom of my KK, inside the bottle holder.
    My “trauma kit” consists of a CAT tourniquet, Israeli bandage, QuickClot hemostatic gauze, trauma shears, and a few other odds and ends. I keep all of this in the FR-1 pouch, fastened to the outside of my pack (opposite side to the bottle holder) for quick access. If you need your trauma kit, you’re NOT going to want to be digging around in your pack to find it.
    For a get-home bag, I recommend stashing a merino wool base layer, wool socks, a full set of light rain gear, hat, gloves, and a good-quality reflective tarp that can serve as a “space blanket” or as a hasty tarp shelter. I carry all of this stuff in the main compartment of my ‘Falcon 2’, with space left for extra food, or whatever.
    In the secondary pocket of my pack - my “food & fire pocket” - I carry five different fire-starters, a Trangia alcohol stove, a small bottle of alcohol or methyl hydrate, and a Vargo ‘Hexagon’ wood stove - that also serves as a pot stand and wind screen for the Trangia stove. This compact, lightweight cook-set makes boiling water (for purifying drinking water, brewing up coffee or tea, or for reconstituting a freeze-dried meal) quick, easy and stealthy. Well worth the weight if you’re only going to be traveling one or two days.
    I’ve retasked my “admin pocket” as a “navigation, communication & commerce” pocket - complete with compass, maps of our region and province, programmable UHF/VHF/FM radio, CDN$100.00 in small bills, and CDN$100.00 in $2.00 coins (which can be used in Canadian vending machines).
    Canadian firearms legislation precludes us from carrying handguns, open or concealed, so the only self-defence-related tools I carry in my GHB are a sturdy, fixed-blade knife, and a tactical flashlight.

    I once( many moons ago) worked at Ft Bragg teaching survival(evade, resist, escape) and one of the key points is this KISS- Keep It Simple Stupid.
    Simplify your tools and consider with skill you can fashion tools. Don't go cheap on a knife, yes a multi tool is great, but a knife is a key tool have a solid blade along with your multi tool. Some cordage( para or whatever ) and get some protein bars at GNC- get the high count gram ones for body builders. Unless your in a swampy state you won't need a catadyne filter some chor tabs or iodine work. If you use a canteen cup loose in a bag stuff it with stuff to cut on bulk( remember to pad so your not wearing a bell. And for god sake don't lug around a China folds saw. Your going home not building a damn log cabin kids.

    So true about the Zippo not holding fuel. It'll evaporate within a week.

    • @cmrsvids
      @cmrsvids 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but there's a fix. I agree that a Zippo doesn't belong in a bag in the first place and that a Bic is a better choice for that.
      However, although I'm not a smoker I always carry a Zippo in my front pant pocket. Top it off and then fit a thick ranger band over it. It takes more than a month for the fuel to evaporate. Peel the ranger band back if you need to light it. Just top it off with fluid every other week or so.
      The thing I like about a Zippo is that it's pretty bomb proof. Hide a few extra flints under the felt flap and you're good to go.

    There is a lot of volume in that canteen cup that is not being used. Consider adding a pair of socks, underwear boxers, and some toiletries. And that goes for the holster as well. I bet you could stuff a pair of low cut socks or maybe a pair of gloves in there. Great bag - liked the video. But every cubic inch of space is real-estate that should be taken advantage of me thinks.

The difference is the I have has the name of a national maintenance company on the back and it looks a bit worn. I also used a non tactical rucksack. Hope your friend recovered and is doing well. Santa brought me a Maxpedition Falcon 2 for Christmas, been filling and refilling, trying to find out what works, what I need, how much it weighs. It's gonna be used as a GHB, EDC, day hike pack. I will just swap out the mission specific gear and supplies.
    A GHB doesn't need a lot of food, just a few small snacks to keep your head focused, water is important, but its heavy, and freezes. I keep a gallon jug with a paracord strap to lash to the pack or sling it over my shoulder. In my pack I have a stainless bottle/cup and a Geigerrig bladder, a filter, and purification tablets, or I can boil water, but a GHB is for short term. If your not gonna be able to get home within 24 hours, you need a larger more comprehensive pack/plan.

    Hi! Just a little update. I now have a Maxpedition Gyrfalcon Backpack-LOVE IT!!!! I keep it in my Pickup at all times. I have TWO Water filters, TWO Flashlights, a 9 source Fire Kit, Shelter, Food & Cooking setup, some extra clothing, some ham radio gear and it is provisioned for myself for EIGHT DAYS!
    This past week, my truck was unavailable to me due to a weather event, so the wife and I shared HER car for four days. The Gyrfalcon stayed in my truck. Though I had no emergencies happen, I got to thinking: What if something happens and my Gyrfalcon is 20 miles away?! Or, what if some human caused event takes place and Im cutoff from my truck? So, I'm thinking of getting a little Falcon II and setting it up for my basic emergency needs for 2-3 Days just in case. The Gyrfalcon is the Mother Ship & the Falcon II would ALWAYS be with me away from my Truck, regardless of where I am or what I'm doing, and will serve as an EDC "Lifeboat", with duplication of my must-haves to survive. If I still have to book for home on foot, I'll go back to my truck, pull the EDC gear in the Falcon II, transfer it back to the Gyrfalcon, (assuming I can get to it-if not, I'm still provisioned for the minimum 3 days) and off for home I'll go.

    Good ideas, but I thought a get home bag was for use in a catastrophic situation and smaller in size for quick travel purposes, whereas a survival bag is larger to cover a much larger time frame where you may need to camp out for a long time? I want my get home bag light so I can run with it. If I can't run with it to avoid undesirables or pick up the pace for another reason, and have to drop it it does me no good.

    Great video! I've put together basically the same thing. A few times people have sort of mocked the whole idea of a 'Get Home Bag' rather than or in addition to a B.O.B... but when you think about it, what is more likely to happen? We all know of the rationale behind a B.O.B., and hope we never need it. But being 'away from home & stranded' can happen any time we leave our house.
    Again... great informational video!

    Non-Lethal security try some pepper spray and for back up some Bear Spray (think it works on the four legged bears). Also in the hydration pocket put some soft armor in with the water bladder. I keep a case of water in the trunk to put in the water bladder if needed or rotate to the kitchen for drinking. A good back up for the cell phone is an AM/FM/WB radio by Lacrosse with some ear buds to save on batteries. Lithium batteries store longer and like the cool weather better. Have three Leatherman tools to choose from and may add the Leatherman Bracelet-the budget, the budget. Remember the "The Ten Essentials".

    *** One thing that you're GREATLY missing that I highly suggest for any bug out or get home bag is a small "LA Cross, All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio." Is small and light weight.. Has a hand crank for electricity... No batteries needed, And a solar panel, an LED light, AM/FM/WB radio. GREAT for weather conditions and important information in the car, at home with no electricity or in the woods! Crank it up and you are ready to go any where with endless music, information and light. Check one out... It is a MUST to have.

Since even that video, I've added more rain gear, a pair of pants and more socks. It's tough to get what I need in that small of a bag but adding too much more defeats the purpose. I guess if you can keep dry, that would help.

    Great go bag...lots of very useful gear...
    Tips:
    After you drink water from a metal bottle( works with plastic bottles too but you have to transfer water into it) , you can heat more water ,and use it as hot water bladder for cold trip( like in winter). Use paracord to make a simple shoulder harness and put the bottle near the heart area to keep your core warm. Works either if you're on the move or sleeping in the cold. Bandana or sock could be used with it too. This method of keeping warm is similar to heating rocks. Last few hours depending on insulation and how cold it feels outside.
    If you dont have road flares or glow sticks, you can take a white/orange or yellow bag with a flashlight to make large 3 to 10 feet halo signals. (th-cam.com/video/jGp2DRS6duY/w-d-xo.html)

    I'm not here to criticize but I see an issue with your bag. I have a cheaper version of your bag made by Red Rock Outdoors. I didn't notice the issue until I started to set up my EDC bag. There are no rain flaps to cover the zippers on your bag and mine. In case of rain the water will easily seap through the zippers. The rain flaps help keep most of the rain out. So you may need to use zip lock bags to keep some of your gear in. If your bag doesn't have a drainage hole you may want to install one or two. They make small plastic grommets that snap in.

      @@jamescarmean2701 Yes, makes it less tactical looking as well WITHOUT having to make an investment in a brand new bag if you don't have that kind of extra $ lying around.
      They sell 2-pks of these (nylon waterproof covers) on Amazon for btw ~$10-$20ish right now depending on the size of your bag.
      Some have a reflective safety stripe across the back and offer options that include a dark color cover paired with a neon safety color. That makes it easy enough to swap out in case you do need that loud brightness for surprise/urgent reasons.

    Nothing wrong with a Zippo lighter in your bag. Just buy a tiny bottle of fuel to fill it. I’ll take a zippo for a bic any day.

      Trigger Happy Guns You mentioned you lived in Ohio and you used a hurricane as an example of when you would use the bag. I'm from Australia so I'm not familiar with US geography and I didn't think Ohio had many hurricanes but apparently you get them every now and then. You learn something new everyday haha

      NicholasG28 got ya. Yeah we generally don't get what the coast does. Usually more flooding and power outages that last a while. Had one in 2012 and we were without power for 9 days.

    I have 6 bags . 1. Transit bag (use to get to my “get home bag “). 2. Get Home bag 3. Bug out bag 4. Defender Bag (Home defense). 5. Minuteman bag 6. Load out bag .
    I spent $2000 in shit that will never use . I have a clutter house with prepping gear , I have zero money to travel , I spend hours a day watching stupid videos like these , I’m single , and waiting for the doomsday to come to justify my purchases .
    Don’t be like me . Live your life freely and yes make a little emergency kit but don’t get caught up his prepper trend . Your creator will take you from this life and to the next when he chooses . Trust God and do good in Gods name .

    • @triggerhappyreviews

      Yes you can boil water in plastic. Two issues with that. One, it can be toxic to do so. Two, why risk losing your container when you can just use steel?

    • @Benjicmm
