    Imagine being an Anglo-Saxon Soldier patrolling a beach on a foggy morning. All you hear is ocean noise. All of a sudden, you hear this rumbling noise coming from the distant ocean, it resembles Thunder. Suddenly, the silhouette of 100 long ships appears in the fog. Full of throat singing Vikings. It's too late to call for help

      We really don’t know, but according to language historians, this would probably be an early stage of lanuage for us all.

    Hehe it is hilarious reading all these comments, never bothered before. We have never claimed that we do (in whatever projects we are now involved with) or did Viking music. I personally find "Viking" as a musical terminology totally ridiculous. Some historians suggest that the throat sounds are older than spoken language and that it was used to scare predators, communicate with animals etc but of course they don't know either. It does have strong healing properties thought, maybe cause it has something like 2-4 sounds at the same time. The Tuvans, The Mongols, The Tibetans, The Inuits etc have different kinds of these techniques, The Sami and North Americans touch something similar at times too. There are also Africans doing it. I've even hear a recording from an American guy recorded in (I believe) the 1920's suddenly jumping into it. As for the solo's I can only speak about mine which comes around 30 seconds, the only inspiration for that was the moment and what the voice and my singing skills at the time allowed to happen😁 I don't care if it's the best in the world or not, I gave it my best and I believe that is the best I can do.
    But hey, thanks for getting engaged wether you like it or not.

      Thor Odinson Throat singing existed before any language. The Huns for a long time couldn’t even speak to one another. They did communicate in some form, even the later Cuman people had massive language issues. Music was the language they understood on the steppes. In my opinion all cultures at one point would have been the same. This is all way before any kind of musical scaling existed also.

      Kjell Braaten Is there a site where I can research this style better and possibly learn to perfect my technique? Whenever I search online it either gives me the Asian styles or American football cheers lol not to seem racist or ethnocentric but I have no interest in the Asian styles of throat-singing/chanting, only because I am wanting to develop a closer bond with my heritage and my heritage is Scandinavian. Any advice would very greatly appreciated!

    Is this actually what such music sounded like? Or is it all guess-work? I'm aware that there was an account from the 10th century by an Arab trader visiting Denmark that the Norse made some form of growling sound from their throats when singing. But is there any other sources for how it actually sounded? Is there an established tradition of throat singing anywhere in Scandinavia?

    • @kjellbraaten
      @kjellbraaten  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I do not believe this is how it sounded, and yes it was guesswork based partly on the source you mention, and partly on the throat- singing tradition of inuit- people and their cultural connection to the sami.
      Little did we know back then (this was recorded about 15 years ago) that we would start a trend :)

    the only reason I ask is because I myself have just entered the world of viking reenactment, and if this is indeed a historical recorded viking art then id like to learn it. could you do a video or show me some links explaining the references it would be much appreciated and huge contribution to the Viking cultural learnings.

    I believe throat singing is a form of mediation and offering to the creator. I believe throat singing is gift that God has given to us and dates far back to our earliest ancestors. Who had their own form of wisedom that they painted for their descendants to see.

      It is called Throat-singing, @Catty779. It is an ancient singing technique found in many cultures. Today, it is most common in Inuit and Tuvan traditions.

    Anyone else have psychedelic experiences listening to this kinda music?

    • @kjellbraaten
      @kjellbraaten  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, but I would probably call it «spiritual» . Especially when performing. This session here, for example. Was quite spiritual. Many cultures have used this or similar kind of music for spiritual work. Some call it «Shamanism» others call it different. Today, Gospel is one of the most common types of music for this, but the later years, many have turned towards other more tribal or even «heathen» traditions to gain the same experience.

    Where does this type of music come from

    • @kjellbraaten
      @kjellbraaten  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an attempt of reconstructing music in a way that MAY have been done by the vikings. That means Scandinavia. (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland...)
