Your reviews are the best on 'net. Love the open, honest, knowlegable, balanced, articulate, unemotional analysis. Thought we were good in the first half despite being pinned back: Rodriguez, Todibo, Kilman, Bowen, Kudus and AWB looked robust. I'm not sure Paqueta gets to start in my team. For me the second half was a direct result of Postecoglou's intelligent sub/tactical reshuffle; unfortunately, JLo didn't really respond quickly enough. Our players looked very tired within 10 minutes of the second half kickoff, which I suppose is natural after performing like that in the first half.

I spent a career coaching American football... and I got my very best advice from my boss when I got my very first head coaching job. Taking over a program an installing a new philosophy is a very tough thing to do, so I asked him "Is there any advice you can give me before I start?" He gave me a simple answer that I remember to this day: "You can do anything you feel you need to do... even if it's unpopular with fans... and I'll have your back. But what you should NEVER do is anything that embarrasses me or the program you represent." These recent West Ham performances have been embarrassing, and it risks having butts not hitting the seats at London Stadium. His tactics don't fit the players skillsets (though he continues to do the insanity thing) and he continues to start players that are clearly not playing up to a basic standard. I've been in this position, and at this stage Lopetegui needs to simplify the tactics to keep games competitive (i.e., don't play fullbacks high if we are left vulnerable in transistion)... and sit players who aren't in good form. As a coach, you can always layer in more complexity to a system over time... but if you force feed your system on players that don't have the ability to execute it with any consistency... you're just asking for trouble.

I'm an American and American football (particularly college) fan as well, this very much reminds me of issues with my team and why I also love that sport. Maximizing how high you can punch from where you're at. Air Raid, Triple Option, West Ham can bring in players that don't need the equivalent of that (just brought in a bunch), but there must be an identity suited to the players we have and the players we can recruit that maximizes their efforts and results in Ws in an insanely competitive environment, that is all that matters. Well said.

@@nesta6480 Thanks. Speaking of triple option, we ran the wishbone... lol. Our identity was to play great defense and grind clock on offense... my best athletes (except for our QB) were on defense. Not a great record the first year, but we never lost by much... I think our worst loss was 27-10. In year 2, we were scoring almost 30 points a game.

Just got to catch up, thanks for the great show as always. Re: the 'process' point Jack emphasizes at 52:54, that's really it isn't it. As an American fan of the Hammers who only just became a dedicated supporter under Moyes I'm out of turn, but a part of what drew me to the club (just one part) was the distinct pov of the tactics in relation to who we can bring in and dedication to them. That resonates across different sports and geographies. Back half of last season was very bad, but felt to me more like squad than anything (what if we had Kilman and Todibo at CB then, more depth throughout, might have been better), but I'm definitely in the camp concerned w/ results more than specific styles. When executed I found the previous approach enthralling, doesn't have to be that, just something with a pov that works. The order of operations and who you can get (profiles) and transition of an identity is such massive project, you guys are very good at articulating the issues where we see some positive aspects, extreme negatives (transitional defending shocking) but most importantly not the *cohesion*. Could be 'give it time', but I'm not feeling whatever this is is ultimately the way forward whoever is manager (or 'coach' now) in that the current set up is making our best players less effective. We have good players, this can be a good squad, but it's less than the sum of its parts and we don't seem to be on the cusp of the identity that fits outside a vague notion of potentially working toward 'control the game with possession.' Up the Hammers, Come On You Irons.

Really refreshing to see a balanced review even coming off a bad defeat, there’s usually some good things to takeaway from any result

Welcome analysis, and it keeps coming down to Lopetegui and his tactics and team selections for the poor results and performances- it's reached the point after 10 games that I cannot see it getting any better, that Lopetegui will still chop and change to no effect. Next three games are critical and not hopeful, even against a poor Man U

Many West Ham fans will tell you it's only 8 games, which is just as big a problem as the failure to correctly identify, or agree on, the source of the fault.
70% of fan sites are also doing a terrible disservice to supporters in this respect.

Glad you picked up on Todibo's play against Son prior to his goal - he did literally everything a CB should do in that situation to a T - was gobsmacked the way Areola responded and left the near post open. Do wonder whether Son just has some sort of aura to undo years of training and instinct. Sounds like a let off but I do wonder whether the sun was in Areola's eyes for Kulesevski's goal in first half - Vicario had a cap on in the second half... but Areola really should have done better against Son's - it just completely killed the game off.

great video guys! dont suppose you would give your thoughts on what exactly Lopetegui's tactical ideas are. I for the life of me dont have a clue what his set principles are and what he wants our identity to be. Would love that as an extra vid ;)

They've done it previously... Essentially build out from back, retain possession in midfield (rather than look for killer pass), fullbacks push high to create overload on wings

Fabianski definitely needs to be brought in after Areola's performance. I wonder if a switch to a wing back system might suit what Loppy wants to do with the players we've got( especially with Kudus suspended & Fullkrug seemingly no closer back)

Just feels like we have this extremely talented squad, but it's being wasted at the moment. We should be able to enjoy Kilman, enjoy Rodriguez, enjoy Todibo even, but that's difficult when you're not winning games, and worse when you're getting spanked. Just begging for the manager, or a manager, to let the players play their preferred positions in their preferred ways and express themselves.

Could todibo not have challenged Son? What's the point in delaying and retreating into the box when it results in the inevitable. I think he has to make a challenge. He is supposed to a quality defender
