I love your channel! Finally someone that respects his viewer by not only showing of his great gear, but by providing good and practical advice for keeping costs low. Thank you!
I used the flashlight trick at a restaurant in a hotel before Covid. I had a glass of beer in front of me. I carry an led flashlight with several lights in my camera bag. The beer glass had a frosted logo etched into it. So I turned on the flashlight and held it directly above the glass. It lit up the beer and the logo the glass from the inside. My niece’s spouse asked what I was doing because I did it so quick. I showed him the photo, and he was impressed that something so simple could work like that. As other creatives say... “ you control the light.”
Great tips! If you don't have a spare bed sheet you can also take a white t-shirt and throw that over your light as a diffuser. Been doing that for the past few weeks in my videos and it works fairly well!
Thanks Dancy! Glad you enjoyed the tip! If you want to learn more about white balance and other manual video camera settings you can check out my FREE super simple camera settings guide: www.benjohnsoncreative.com/ssccguide
Funny story for you... when I first met my photographer bestie, she was shooting me with a new lighting set up. During the shoot I noticed some odd shadows happening... the baking paper she had used as a diffuser was on fire and ash was raining down on me!! Best first shoot together ever! 🤣🤣
I am honestly surprised that you don't have 100k subs yet. Your videos have definitely taught me so much on how to level up my TH-cam videos! Keep up the good work Ben! I wish you the best success!
You are a fantastic individual. Just finished the free course on your website, have my first proper camera arriving today (only ever used a phone before) Feeling a lot less overwhelmed with your guidance! About to get my TH-cam channel up to scratch and ready to take off :)
that free course was amazing. I have a gopro ten. and it takes great video and pics but I feel like this course will let me take it to the next level. also I purchased the rgb pocket light and mountdog softbox and I love em both . thanks brother
Your channel really has me motivated. I already worked on my banner my outro and my intro. Thank you for all the tips. Your audio video also helped me a ton to understand how to set up my mic although I have to do some sound proofing because I have a ton of echo.
Thank you very much for this video!!! I’ve been having when recording at home with my lighting, especially when doing any kind of live stream. Either there’s too much light or not enough. But thankfully enough you’ve truly helped me out with these tips. Especially since this is all budget friendly!!! Keep on doing you sir! Lifetime subscriber here and ready for your next videos!
Hey Patrick! Yes I believe you’re right haha. I’m definitely blown away by the support you guys are having for the channel! Life changing stuff! Keep at it man, it only takes one vid to really get things ramping!
I like your tip on adding a lamp in the background for separation. QUESTION I use 2 cowboy studio softboxes on either side of a ring light but a few bulbs are broken in the softboxes. What bulbs do you recommend to replace them?
Excellent tips! You can also sub out the bedsheets for shower curtains/liners if you want to have something that isn't as thick of a diffusion as a bed sheet. They are super durable over the long term.
Seventh tip has got me curious, how bright my screens are. I've set brightness on the main 27-inch screen to maximum instead of the usual 16%, set a white background, turned off any other lights and looked around. Then turned on AL-MX and... it easily outdid the screen. Oof. I can guess that AL-MC is going to be equally more effective in RGB department than any screen and a lot easier to use (try hanging such a heavy screen above your head at an angle), and tube lights are even stronger. On third tip, just a day ago I have seen a video with such a background window, that was so crazily strong compared to the "key light" exposing face and body, that when the girl the camera was filming has raised her hands, they have disappeared in all that light spill overflowing her, leaving behind only spikes made out of these parts of upper arms that were still thick enough to block some of all that light. You might try showing this just to warn people! I'm definitely going to think about these tips!
Great tips Ben! I’m always jostling lighting around to get the effects. Learned a ton from your previous videos. I have some plug in led under mount lights (color changing) for colors (3 @ $20 each) and I actually use a plug in clip style book light for my rim light. Adjustable neck at any angle. The flashlight is a great idea. I have one that comes with my 18V tools that pivots. Probably perfect. Thanks for the tip!
Great video, Ben. Thanks very much for sharing. I've just bought lights and I'm currently trying to find the best way to light my videos. These tips are a great starting point.
Thanks for recommending this video. The setup you show when you're talking is exactly what I'm trying to achieve. The only space I have right now is the corner of my basement and the desk I use for my computer is one with a big backboard with all the different compartments, which is terrible for lighting (lots of shadows). I may have to change up my desk to make the setup better. I also need a camera that shoots at such a shallow depth of field. My first "real" camera is a Panasonic Lumix G7 with has a micro 4/3 sensor which doesn't work well with shallow DOF, especially with the one lens that I have (a zoom lens). I may be able to use my iPhone 11 for this with the f/2.8 lens. This is a good start and I appreciate you creating this and sharing it, and recommending it from another video I commented on.
In that case you’ll want to focus even more on setting the light and scene so that it looks great to the eye and the cam corder won’t have to work as hard to make it good
Ben, really great tips! I am trying the pillow case over my ring lite. Questions - 1. what length lens are you using at the 40sec mark and on, and how far from the camera are you? I am trying to get that much of my talking head in the video. My 12mm on an A 6000 crop sensor is too wide and I look 8 feet away even though my nose is 20 inches from the camera! My 50mm is 85mm equiv on a crop sensor and I have to be about 7 feet away to get the perspective in this video! 2. Are you recoding voice via a shotgun mic into the A7 or into a recorder like the Zoom or Tascam and then syncing in post? I'm a little intimidated about being able to sync sound in 8-12 clips that get stitched together into one to make the final video! I have been using a Brio 4K webcam with its mics and only stopping once if at all in a 4 minute video. I am sure it is much easier to blend 1-2 video clips with sound from an iPhone or HD webcam, than using a mirrorless and then syncing separately recorded sound files to multiple video clips! I guess you have to clap every time you start talking again! It there was a good way to get acceptable sound directly to the camera - like one of the Rode hotshoe mics? I am slowly putting together a TH-cam studio to up my game and plan to get the A7. Many thanks!
With the crop sensor I’d recommend this lens: amzn.to/3u9MDTG I’m using a zoom h6 recorder and syncing in post. I do all my talking in one clip using around 20-30 minutes and end up cutting it down significantly because I do multiple takes. I talk about this some here: th-cam.com/video/JRW72GQG8bc/w-d-xo.html There is software that makes the syncing easy which I show here: th-cam.com/video/YHNksm7zCug/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!
