My god Adam Ray is the best improviser I've ever seen. Tony can literally throw him a suggestion or question on the spot with no warning and he can make up a funny, catchy song or do an impression of a radio host that includes things from earlier in the show and make it look planned it's crazy. He puts them on the spot and makes them nervous so their timing is way off. Plus the crowd already thinks anything they say won't be funny. When they are expecting somebody to be funny like Patterson or Casey Rocket they can say stuff that's not even remotely funny yet they still laugh.

Sure, nerves are going to factor in, but a comedian with any talent whatsoever can at least manage to deliver one joke they’ve written that is coherent. These dudes can’t come up with a single funny thing to say that could possibly work on a real crowd, under any circumstance.
They’re just like the people who turn up for American idol auditions back in the day. Somehow, they have managed to go a significant amount of time without realizing that they hav none of the skills or talent required to do the thing. It’s like a psychological problem or something. You need to have some level of humility and to be able to objectively assess how well you’re doing at something. Some people are just missing that part of their brain.

Tony giving unfunny veteran comics so much time in interviews, I think is his way of giving them a chance to prove to themselves why it is it they're doing comedy. As long as they know their place. Tony knows what it's like to be at the bottom, he's constantly throwing a hand down to pick funny people up. I can't help but appreciate the show for that.
