  • Mavs Trade Rumors: The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly discussing a trade with the Detroit Pistons to swap Tim Hardaway Jr. and Quentin Grimes. How could the deal help Luka Doncic & Kyrie Irving?
Nick Angstadt is joined by Lauren Gunn (x.com/TheLaurenGunn) to discuss the Dallas Mavericks trade rumor with the Detroit Pistons to swap Tim Hardaway Jr. and Quentin Grimes. Then they discuss other trade ideas for Jerami Grant, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and someone from the Brooklyn Nets (no, not him).

It was a mirage. The reality is that the Mavs have been trying to trade THJ for 2+ years now, but nobody wanted him because scouts use eyes for more than reading one column of boxscores, and can see that his streaky shooting has never compensated for low iq, bad defense, and fat contract. THJ being an expiring contract is the highest value he's ever had, and that's why there's finally some plausible trade talk.

The Grant/Grimes trade you CAN sign DJJ because overall you end up 5 mil lower in cap which puts you below the first apron. Signing DJJ then locks the roster in for the year

    • @SDesWriter
      @SDesWriter 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

So your goal is to be just as bad in the Finals as this year? You know, assuming a team with no offense outside of 2 guys can beat Denver and an OKC team that just added scoring AND defense to their starters? Lock him in? Where the hell else would he go with 9/3/1 numbers? What team wants that?

@@SDesWriterhow in gods name is that just as bad? Grant is another CONSISTENT scorer. He played decent defense in Denver, he's just not trying in Portland just like PJ wasnt in Charlotte. Grant is an improvement. Grimes is a wash for Green but on a cheaper deal. Kleber is a liability because hes injured so often and takes 2 months to get his shot back.
This move we dont lose anything that got us to the Finals, but we add a more consistent 3rd option. How the hell you see that team "just as bad" is batty crazy.

@@poocheese55 I was reading the last sentence where you said when you resign DJ the roster is "Locked in". Grant would be an improvement on the current roster. I'm still not a fan of the move because in 4 seasons he hasn't ever played in more than 63 games (and 82 + at least 20 is double that). But if they got him and he was healthy for the playoffs they'd have a chance.
Grimes is trash though. Misses tons of games, averages 5ppg, shoots 25%/14?. Other than dumping salary, I can't see any reason to get him.

I'm not an expert but from what I read Mavs need to shed around 10M in salary to open full MLE. I don't think an extra 5M saved will open full MLE, we would still only have TPMLE available which cleraly is not enough to re-sign DJJ

Grimes as a UH kid who could return to Texas and provide a bit more defense than Josh.
Clearing bad out of rotation money the big win here IMO.
Grant has been a Mavs target forever it feels like. But I am not "all in" on him. The 2 R1s plus Maxi and non-rotation guys I'd do.
Has to be some discount in terms of talent sent for his cap hits.

To be honest, this would be a perfect trade. We would save 12 mio in cap space. That would allow us to give DJJ 12.9 Mio AND sign a vet min guy (if we want to) as the 15th man AND we would still be around 2 mio under the Hard cap. Not to mention that Grimes and Green are basically the same guy and could battle the backup SG/SF role out over the season. Whoever wins stays, the other one can be traded next summer. Grimes also fits age wise.
IF we can get him for THJ and 2 2nd. I would do it in a heartbeat. Not only fit wise, but even moreso cause we would have a plathera of good contracts to trade (and a couple of 1st) IF a true SF/PF upgrade becomes available. Grimes 4.3 Mio, Green 12.6 Mio, DJJ 12.9 Mio, Washington 15.5 Mio, Maxi 11 Mio... A lot of good-great contracts to combine. But even if not, this would be our roster:
    PG: Luka/Exum/VET MIN PG
    SG: Kyrie/Hardy/Lawson
    SF: DJJ/Green/GRIMES
    PF: Washington/O-Max/Maxi
    C: Lively/Gafford/Powell

Mavs NEED a 3rd option scorer. If they move THJ and do not bring back a #3, it will be the dumbest move. When you consider that Kyrie misses a ton of games, massively underproduced in 2/4 playoff series, and that the Mavs were held under 100 points in 4/5 Finals games... I honestly don’t think the Mavs can just run it back. OKC already got significantly better and they aren’t done. Minnesota is another year of Ant progression. The Lakers, Suns, and Nuggets will probably stay around the same. Memphis will have Morant healthy. The clippers hinge on PG’s decision. The Rockets, Spurs, and Jazz are all young. Not sure Dallas can catch lightning twice without improving. Complacency kills us here.

Forget Edwards....what happens if they get rid of Towns? Reid becomes a 40minute per game player and Dalls is going to have to find a way to stop someone that absolutely torched them in the series as a part-time player this year.

    • @Smido83
      @Smido83 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Here's the thing... we are young too. People forget that. Luka 25, Gafford 25, Washington 25, Green 23, Hardy 22, O-Max 22, Lively 20... ad Grimes at 24 (looking at this trade) and I do not see a lot of teams that young and experienced. OKC and Houston are the 2 teams I think have a higher upside internally then Dallas. Just because they are at different stages then we are.
Every other theam in west will not. No not even Minnesota. Cause Conley will be 37 soon, Gobert is 32 and they are already in cap hell (193 mio in salaries WITHOUT Slow-Mo and Morris and McLoughlin). Spurs/Utah/Portland are not there yet and I dont see how the Clippers/Suns/Lakers/Warriors can get significantly better. And The same is true for Denver. They have to keep KCP and most likely have to overpay him. Means they also have no real options to get better. The only hope they have is Braun/Strather/Watson making a huge jump. And that will still not close their biggest problem, a good Jokic backup.
Our team ran through the last quater of the season and the western conference in the playoffs. Just cause they lost in the finals does not mean we have to drastically change something. Our core is young enough and was just lacking experience. Expericence in the Finals and as a team. Except Kyrie no player had any Finals experience. And people forget that Gafford/Washingon joined the team just 5 months before the playoffs. We do not need changes. We need consistency. I told the Thunder that experience is extremely important in the PO and even if their core might be more talented, Dallas would win that series. Now everyone has a deep Finals run to learn from. To see hat went wrong and how to fix it. We are fine... just dump THJ and resign DJJ. Nothing more is needed.

I'm not saying they can't beat, I'm just not sure about it. OKC didn't get significantly better but they might get better enough to beat Mavs in play off series since this year was very close and OKC replace a player who was Mavs' target with one of the better 3&D guys in the league. Let's not forget that off season is still going and a lot of other West teams will improve their rosters before regular season start.
IMO We should keep the core: Luka, Kyrie, Lively, PJ, Gafford & DJJ
Players I would like to personally keep: Exum & OMax (because I believe they are worth more to Mavs than for other teams, and their value should improve over time)
The rest should be put on the trade block in looks to improve the roster in areas which were lacking in Finals. We should look for a starting SF with more offensive upside than DJJ and probably either a ball handler or shooter off the bench. I don't think Mavs should be desperate in those moves, or overpay just to make deals, but they should look for those improvements.

Have a wild trade idea. Three way trade with the Lakers and Bucks. Bucks have an old team. Lillard will be 34 in 9 days. Middleton 33 in a month (plus he isn't the player he once was). Lopez is 36 already. Plus, the Bucks have no young players coming up, and don't have any draft assets. So, they are not contenders now, and the team has no future.
Mavs trade Kyrie to the Lakers. The Lakers send their 2024, 2028 and 2030 draft picks to the Bucks and maybe Reeves and Rui. Their 2028 and 2030 picks will have high value. Mavs send their 2025 and 2031 picks to the Bucks as well, along with THJ, Maxi, and a combination of Green/Hardy/O-Max to the Bucks. Of course, for Giannis.
Lakers get Kyrie, who LeBron wants, and whose reputation is now worth a big trade. The next two years are their win now timeframe. Plus, the Lakers have a major advantage in being able to acquire free agents in the future because players want to play there.
The Bucks start the rebuild with 5 first round picks and some young players with some potential. They also trade Lillard, Middleton and Lopez to contenders for more assets. That should get them another 3-5 first round picks and more young players with potential.
Giannis will be exactly what the Mavs need. A big forward next to Luka. They have their two great centers. They have great forwards. And with the extra money they are sending out they can re-sign DJJ and acquire like a Tyus Jones or similar player for backup guard, along with Exum.

(Sorry for the repeat) But this can work.
Send Powell to Houston for nothing(if they have the cap space) as they supposedly wanted to offer more than he accepted with the mavs. (if they don't want him send cash considerations with him to another team with cap space)
Cut Exum(yeah I'd like to keep him but he blew his chance)
Stretch wave Lawson(course send to a team with cap space if you can)
then you are under the 165 tax threshold. Mavs now unlock the Full MLE.
See if DJJ will sign for 10 mil for two years(then they will have his bird rights and the discount is actually not such that he will auto say no) or give him the Full MLE asap.
This allows the mavs to keep all their Players and the Salary of the players they want to trade to make a splash.
Then you can trade THJ/Maxi, 2 1sts and 2 2nds for Grant(or another SF that works) Course only 1 if you can. but I'm using a Get it done proposal and not a homer one where people mention a couple 2nds(which will take that just to get rid of THJ).
Thus You keep DJJ and Green(who are your two Point of Attack Defenders) and you add a legit offensive threat that will be your 3rd scorer and might go back to good defense.
Then hope that Hardy becomes your 3 point shooter off the bench and Omax can play 10 hard minutes and you gotten much deeper with the bench etc.
Spencer for the Vet Min or something like that. Then you got the Complete team.

They are best defending guys as big, or even bigger then themself. Or to describe it differently. Grant and PJ can both defend KAT, but neither can defend Edwards effectively. Means they can not work together defensively. Means one has to come off the bench. But that would make no sense whatsoever.
So if you guys want Grant, then a THJ/PJ package makes the most sense. I dont want that, hence why I dont want Grant on our roster. And like I said, we havent even talked about his horrible cntract...

@@Smido83 Oh I have thought about that too. It's really a big question mark. I mean right now our only two Point of attack defenders are DJJ and Green. Both would be coming off the bench in this scenario. Though they could certainly stagger minutes to make it more palatable.
Even if we are lucky and Hardy is the 3 point sg solution off the bench. He's not a defender.
Ive even thought about Luka losing weight and being more nimble and higher stamina for a season to see how that works(I like the idea) What most newbs dont' know when they say that is that he uses his weight a lot to bully ball and fight thru defenders and back down in the paint. Which is a big weapon for the leagues leading scorer.
So it's definitly a give and take scenerio. But if the mavs are more athletic and faster as a team. Then Luka can be more effective in other ways. if we had a few better shooters, he'd probalby easily lead the league in assists and we seen them go up to 6th in pace after the trades. and he was running the show most of the time. so he can not only do it, but could get better(despite what the MSM talking heads kept saying about the slow pace) but they don't watch the games to learn, they watch to find something to complain or praise and usually that's just surface stuff.
I mean I'm open to trading Kyrie etc. I got some interesting takes on that if things fell into place. But the mavs defense wasn't the problem against the celts, it was their offense. they only scored over 99 once. While holding them to 106.
Anyway what are your suggestions smido.

@@leoreoibardo9294 As a 3rd guard behind Luka/Kyrie, Sexton could work. As a SF? No chance in hell. And Green is 6'5 215 with a 6'8 wingspan and a way better defender then Sexton in the 1st place. Stop comparing them, they are 2 completely different types of players.

Trade Hardaway, Josh Green, and prosper for Jerami Grant and Thybulle. Let derrick jones Jr walk and sign naji marshall. Then you still have maxi and hardy to sign n trade for tobias harris. Of course add picks

I want to see the Mavs having a better top 5, they are kind of cheating already with PJ and Lively, both need to improve significantly because both are 15-20M players, they need to improve to a 25-30M players,
They need an amazing smaller wing/shooter/point of attack defender, someone in the 30m range, a Jrue Holiday, Desmond Bane type player, maybe Wiggins
Jerami Grant isn’t that, defense will be awful, rather keep DJJ and wait for something better of hope for internal development, Josh might be another candidate for this X player, but the jump needed is huge!
All this 10-15M contracts are good regular season players but in the big stage they fall off, they need to get rid of them. Maxi, Tim, Josh you jeep if you don’t find that X player.
It sucks that this X player needs to be the point of attack defender, because your two guards can’t be, this is a super tough issue for the Mavs to navigate, that’s the achilles heal of having Luka and Kai together in the back court, it significantly affects the options of the small wing position
