The fellow left alone that you were laughing at when the mob moved off and he just walked away was a great British comedian named Spike Milligan. Milligan was a generation older than the Pythons and was a member of a chaotic trio of comics known as the Goons, on a radio show in the UK. Anyways Spike developed a very unusual and avant garde type of comedy that set the tone for the next generation -- including the Pythons (and The Beatles, one of whom, George Harrison has a cameo in this film. He also helped produce it) . He wasn't supposed to be in the movie, but the Pythons found out he was holidaying in Tunisia, where the film was made, and asked him to make a cameo appearance.
Thank you sir! The Emperor at the time was Tiberius Caesar Augustus. Gaius Julius Caesar was never an emperor. He just kind of...paved the way for Rome to become a literal empire lead by a literal imperator. Pontius Pilate was the 'governor' of Judea at the time. And since I'm being pedantic, only Roman officers had feathers or fur or anything on their helmets. Centurians had crests that went cross-wise over their helmets, while the Optio (second in command of century) had crests that went front to back over their helmets. Regular roman legionaries had no crests at all. Whew. Not sure why I wrote this all for one of my favorite comedies, but my Roman history just spilled out. (Edit: The truly sad part is I didn't have to look any of this up. I have no life)
@@cassuttustshirt4949 The word Emperor comes from Caesar... al though of course what you say is true he wasn't a emperor as you would define the word today. Dictator would be more fitting for Julius tbh.
@@cassuttustshirt4949 Well.. there are accounts that claim Legionaries DID have crests, but NEVER for combat. Legionary crests would be almost exclusively ceremonial. Like for parades.
@@septimus7524 Oh sure, maybe for a triumphal parade or something. Everybody had to look cool for that. But that was a small honor guard, and most likely a few musicians to play the tune that the other soldiers sang to.
@Darth Wheazius The dictator was an pure emergency assignment done by the roman senat during times of crisis and that assignment lasted 6 months. Usually all political assignments lasted 1 year and were always hold by 2 people but for times of crises the senat gave the authority to 1 person in order to have quick and straight decisions. Caesar bribed the senat to annouce him as dictator for life time (which lasted then just 1 month and then he got killed) because he had the military power and also the roman people on his side to do so..which was basically the start of the transition from a Republic into an Empire and his successor Augustus who became the first Emperor fulfilled that transition after he had won the civil war which broke out soon after Caesar was killed because his death left behind a huge power vaccuum..very simplified explained.
Another hilarious reaction! So glad you enjoyed how silly they are, but also how intelligent they are. Really psyched you appreciated Mike Palin, between the guy hanging in jail, the Roman with the speech impediment, and the guy preaching so layed back, its a tour de force!
I liked that u showed the speech impeded dungeon wardens in detail, I suffered from one as well a long time myself & watching that is always very dear to me. Them turning back back to normal once they're amongst themselves is just utter hilarious!
As I mentioned in the Holy Grail reaction, Monty Python used a variety of sources to score that one (the album is available from Amazon as an MP3 download, but years ago some enterprising soul assembled all the sources into two fan-made FLAC albums). This time, the score was composed by Geoffrey Burgon, and I've been searching/hoping for a CD for ages. (There's an album out there, but it's audio from the movie, not the isolated score.) 30:46 Otto and his JPF Suicide Squad had a bigger role in the earlier drafts of the script, but almost all of it got cut, except the ending because Judith was already filmed standing over their bodies. If you look really close at the headgear, you'll see why their scenes got cut: _their symbol is a combination of the Star of David and the Nazi swastika._ Monty Python got into enough trouble with the film in its final cut, leaving THAT in probably would have earned them a *real* ass-kicking.
Sad note: Terry Jones, Brian's Mother in this movie, suffered from a form of dementia that took his ability to speak during the last few years of his life. It's a shame, especially considering he made his career on the ability to talk and a lot since he did a lot of history documentaries. He was the David Attenborough of the history documentary. R.I.P. Terry, you were one of the greats.
The best thing about the “Biggus Dickus” scene is that the guards were interns who were told not to laugh no matter what. They had no idea what the scene would be. All of their reactions are genuine reactions to hearing this dialogue for the first time.
Not interns they were extras. Sometimes you hear people claim that they were told if they laugh they would not get paid but that has been confirmed to be 100% false by the guy playing ceasar.
This was my favorite moment in the film the first time I saw it, and then years later I found out about this and loved even more ever since. Buddy that collapses part way through was me the first time i saw it.
AFAIK the guards who brought Brian in were extras and were kept in dark. Rest were informed and the one who did laugh did so because it was scripted so.
Also when it came to Mrs Dikkus Michael Palin came up with a different name each take to keep the joke fresh, incontinentia was just the one they picked
My predictions for 2021: There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight O'clock.
The Latin scene is completely accurate grammatically-I took Latin in high school, and that part is the only movie my teacher ever showed. We had to correct it first though
Man, I love Monty Python. The whole movie is just, jokes jokes jokes, one after the other. These films were made on a tiny budget compared to those of today and I find them way funnier than most comedy's released in recent years.
The bloke at 21:33 is comedy LEGEND Spike Milligan. he wasn't told what the rest of the cast were going to do and when he realised he was on his own he walked off the set. Later in the evening when some of them were in a minibus they saw him at the side of the road arguing with Tunisian police, still in costume and Bernard McKenna got out to talk to them on Spike's behalf, forgetting he was still dressed as a Roman guard.

Glad you took people's advice to watch this movie. I remember watching this when I was 8 or 9 (over 20 years ago) and thinking it was the funniest movie of all time. Awesome to see that the humor holds up to someone watching the movie for the first time 40+ years after release. You did notice that Graham was the lead in both movies, unfortunately he was also the hardest to work with (alcoholism) and died the youngest out of them. You might also recognize John Cleese (lead Roman Soldier and Head of the PFoJ) as he and Eric have been in the most American films. Keep finding those classics! If you really find these guys funny, I suggest youtubing some of their best sketches from Flying Circus and seeing if they hit you the same way. I remember going to the drive-in with my parents and younger brother to see this movie! Just to add that the scene outside his window: "Ooooh, that wasn't a minute!" "Yes it was!" "No it wasn't" is a little tribute to the British pantomine, traditionally performed at Christmas. It also has the major roles performed by the opposite gender.
It is a blast seeing someone newly exposed to Monty Python. You should do Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. It's not as good as Holy Grail or Life of Brian, but it does have some really great stuff in it.
Your reactions to the nudity were so funny. Europeans really think us prudish countries are funny with our modesty of the human body. Also it was the practice for hundreds of years for all roles in plays to be done by male actors; so they dressed up & did the women's parts too. I think Monty Python might have been one of the last troops to do this regularly. Ended up causing more hilarity I the end so all good :) You would probably like the movie A fish called Wanda It has two of the main Monty Python (i think written by them perhaps) troop members in it. Great fun.
The old bearded man who walks away at the end of the shoe/gourd scene is Spike Milligan, a comedian who influenced the Python's style of humour; he was in Tunisia on vacation at the time they were shooting, and they convinced him to be in the scene, but when they'd done the first take he was like, "well, I'm off" and went back to his holiday. That was the take they used.
@@humansrants1694 - no prob. He also is in History of the World Part 1 as the crazy old father M. Rimbaud, and Dick Lester's The Three Musketeers. Other great performances/works by Milligan includes his radio show The Goon Show, which he wrote most of and did various voices for along with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe, his appearance on The Muppet Show, his poetry and war memoirs. Some of it is not totally what you'd call politically correct by modern standards, but he's nevertheless the bedrock of British alternative comedy - everything since is built on the foundations he laid.

Most People back then couldn't really fathom that kind of person Eric Idle played as Stan/Loretta. This movie is the greatest comedy in the history of filmmaking. As you can imagine, it not only offended orthodox Judaism and Christianity but was a brutal parody of blind faith. Genius!!

@@omosango7870 It mostly offended zealots, as it cleverly pointed out that Brian is not Jesus, just another random character from those tumultuous years.
@@johndododoe1411 Well Jesus is just a fictional character as well. Made by Rome as a tool so they could go and take over the world. There is literally nothing original in Christianity, it is a wolf in sheeps clothing that destroyed then ripped off Egypt.

Great info,
That's not Julius Caesar, that's Pontius Pilate

(There's an album out there, but it's audio from the movie, not the isolated score.)
30:46 Otto and his JPF Suicide Squad had a bigger role in the earlier drafts of the script, but almost all of it got cut, except the ending because Judith was already filmed standing over their bodies.
Dementia is so sad. The great Peter Falk got it too. In the end he couldn't even remember his most iconic roll as Lt Columbo.
At least 1 of the guards was a comic actor, he was in the first series of 'not the 9 o clock news'
This movie is a masterpiece, I never get tired of watching it
Every Xmas we do...
The whole losing his sandal scene is a commentary on religious sects and how weird different interpretations of what religious leaders say can be.
