Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are missing a nozzle for your welding gun!! This may explain the slag inclusions, now, I know it's a forge press die and not super critical weld test. But I believe my point still stands.
Very grateful of your videos, gotten me "un-stumped" many times!
    Keep it up!

WestyBadger1 No, it's flux core so it doesn't use a nozzle.

Great videos. What would you say would be a good first big purchase for knife making? Belt grinder, heat treating oven, drill press?

You'll need a drill press, but you can buy one off Craig's List for the cost of a steak dinner. Your first BIG purchase is a belt grinder, for sure.

Another idea is to mill it out of 303 stainless and heat and bend the upper part.

What is this good for? couldnt you make just as good edges by simply forgin it on the flat surfaces? i understand that this keeps the sizes the same but is that the only reason to make this or are there more?

I'll have some details about the use of squaring dies in an upcoming video about making advanced damascus patters like W patterns and jelly rolls...but the short answer is that they're not used for making things flat and square. That you can do on flat dies. They're used to squeeze AND square at the same time. But like I say, that leads into complicated territory that this video wasn't made to cover.
