I actually saw an opera version of this, Bluebeard's Castle. Fairly short as operas go, but really cool. Wagner, I think, but don't take my word for it.
One thing that I rather like about this version of the Bluebeard story is that the sisters who just sort of timidly follow the rules that get laid down for them suffer for it, but the one that immediately does her own thing wins the day. There are a lot of versions of Bluebeard where it's weirdly implied that if the wife had only been obedient and non-curious and not opened that door, maybe things would be OK, which just sends all sorts of creepy messages. I applaud your decision to illustrate the most WTF moments of the story (e.g. the bird disguise). I feel like we'll be getting a lot of mileage out of that "Let's pause for a moment and think about what that would actually look like..." idea. Still, probably better that she disguise herself as a bird than as a cow. Then the story would have been a Dairy Fail instead of a Fairy Dael. (I'll just get me coat.)
That's exactly why I like this version of the story so much (also the Mr. Fox version). It weirds me out when people say the moral of the story is to not be curious or disobedient. The man was hacking up women on a regular basis, I think disobedience should be encouraged. It's also interesting that the Grimm Brothers bring up a point which a lot of others ignored which was, if he's only killing the women because they were too curious and found the previous victims' bodies, how did the first wife die? They suggest he was killing them anyway to bathe in their blood and gain eternal youth. If that's the case, I hardly think avoiding the bloody room would have protected the women in the long term, hahaha. And that pun was amazing.
Great video! This version of the story is better than the one I know, where the girls were actually sent to purgatory after they gave Bluebeard a dose of his own medicine...
I loved this video! As much as I like your mythology videos, I think faerie daels is a great idea. Sme suggestions are The girl without hands which is a really creepy story and also the three snake leaves. Ps. Love the shirt.

The bird thing reminds me of Monkey Island 3 - specifically "el pollo diablo." You get tarred and feathered at some point and an npc mistakes you for "the chicken devil" and...does something? Old point and click adventures are hard to remember the causal chains of events...

MonarchsFactory Yeah the Grimm fairy tales are pretty bloody, and i do own the unmodified versions. My parents would usually change the ending - in this particular story, if i remember correctly - the evil wizzard was to be banished or something, instead of being burned down (with his wedding guests - other evil wizards? not sure.. so long ago :D)
Bluebeard (ad variants) is one of my favourite fairy tales, because it is gruesome but the heroine is clever and resourceful and justice is eventually served. Which makes it a bit more happy than some of my other favourites, which are favourites because of mechanics or nifty creatures (the Goose Girl, Yuki-Onna/Selkies/spirit-/creature-wives).
Thanks for the fairy dael. (yeah, I'm keeping it.) I'm rereading Fables and now Bluebeard's tale can finally be told. Next time toss some fairy tails in the mix.
Oh! suggestion time! Snow Queen if you want to stay on the zeitgeist, obvious influence on tolkien (nazgul blade) and cs lewis, or Sindbad, he's not the same as the films, he's a total coward and he's not even a sailor, he just travels on a lot of boats. 4th voyage is the best. or the orginal X-men, the Six Servants, top recommendation :) . Ahhh I absolutely loved this! Fitcher's Bird is one of my favorite lesser-known Grimm's, this was a great telling (your commentary basically IS my internal monlogue). I would love to hear more obscure Grimm's fairytales! The more bizarre and gruesome the better, I say. ;)
Great story, I only heard parts of it but never the full story so its nice to hear, and you are a good storyteller. A great way to kick off this Haloween week! As a child, my mother bought me many fairytale books with tapes (yes I am that old) and me and my sister would listen to the tape while looking through the book. It came with creepy sounds and everything. Here's a few fairy tales that might be a lot of fun to tell: -The emperor's new clothes. -Little red riding hood. -The wolf and the seven goats. If you enjoy fairytales and you ever get to visit the Netherlands, visit the Efteling. It's almost completely themed after fairytales and has a very rich atmosphere.
I'm that old as well, though, so I think you're fine. (My sister, Shannyn, and I used to listen to the Disney tape/picture book/read-a-long whatsits all the time).
Oh, well, the pun was actually fun (a tale of blood and terror... So just an average fairy tale). Anyway, they a good addition, so I wouldn't mind hear more of them and their happy ending (well, they are bloodless...Well, this one was. At the very end). Oh, and nice chair (and I see you actually used the watermelon Jack-O-Lantern).
My favorite faerie tale is Snow White and Rose Red. I also think you'd do a fantastic job telling the Adventures of Sinbad the Sailor stories. Or Jack the Giant Killer. Or the Six Swans. I love faerie tales, and I think this is the best idea, ever!

Did you write something on your left hand like crib notes? I swear at the start of the video there is writing there, but by midway through, it is gone. This was another great video, and I think if you keep doing them from that chair we need to call it Masterpiece Fairy Daels in honor of Masterpiece Theatre.
