It's important to do it for enjoyment and creativity. We shouldn't focus too much on the business side if it takes away the joy of creating.

I don’t get all the hate for creators who are speaking up about the truth of being a full time content creator. We are not complaining, just being honest what’s actually like. Pretending your life is perfect = people say you’re fake. Saying it isn’t perfect = you shouldn’t be ‘complaining’. You can never do it right 😩 anyway, thank you for making this video and explaining so clearly

Don't forget that being a TH-camr is very similar to running your own business. You should upload things people want to see, just like businessman should offer product/service that people need. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of Famester of course to help) will always pay off at the end. Good luck to everybody, we will all succeed one day!!

The link between the "TH-cam Quitters" mentioned in the video is their heavy dependence on TH-cam metrics (thus on sponsors and metric-related income sources), or I noticed some merchandise like t-shirts...
If you're not capturing your audience, fostering a relationship with them beyond the platform, and offering concrete products or services that "improve their quality of life... then you're destined to depend on "selling time," and indeed, that's a challenging lifestyle, which is why numerous entertainment TH-camrs end up completely burnt out...

One of the things we always keep in mind, especially during our downs is the why we do YT, and this is the thing we emphasize when we mentor someone to do YT. We ask them over and over again why they want to do this. You need that one thing that would bring you back to right place, the one thing that anchors you and reminds you your original and true goal.
What I take away from this video is the importance of creating constrains that helps you protect the life you want to live.
    Thanks Ali!

Nice to hear someone being real about it being 24-7, stress, responsibility to take care of team, constantly creating, etc. I felt burnt out designing for Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Kendrick Lamar, etc. I studied the science of happiness from Laurie Santos which was Yale's most popular class. She said if the doctor said you have 2 weeks left to live- how would you spend your last days? Helped me focus to align myself with what's really important.

One thing I think helps, is creating a backlog of videos, so maybe you shoot 3 vids a week and then you upload 1 every week. The other 2 you can have as a backlog and you can schedule uploads, do this every week and you'll have a huge backlog, and so when you want to take a break, you know you have the content to cover that break.

Yeah I wonder if it isn’t possible to work really hard for 6 months out of the year creating all the videos necessary to keep the channel running and slow down for the other 6 months and maybe take a month off every year. Or some variation of that. Of course if you have scaled up your life in a such a way that now you have to work even harder to maintain an overinflated lifestyle, then it might be stressful to even think about taking a break. That’s what I’m trying to figure out right now while I’m planning my return to TH-cam.

It's definitely important to have a balance between what you want to make as a creator and what your audience wants to see. Like you said said, it's the only way to prevent burn-out. I think the answer is simple, people want to quit because TH-cam isn't as much of a "dream" job as people think it is. It's something that is that head definition of "the grass is always greener on the other side". People think you just sit and talk for a few minutes and quickly edit and move on but the reality is very few TH-camrs do this and even then it's only the people who have massive teams or have fans that are fine with that style of content.

    TW Suicidal ideation:
Thank you, Ali, for making this video. I really needed to hear someone talk about it. Just under two weeks ago, the comments on my second channel became so intense that I became suicidal and had to phone for help and get people to come in and check on me. It had been slowly building up over months, with stress and algorithm pressure, but the comments were so degrading and purposefully hurtful that they pushed me over the edge.
I still had deadlines for sponsors to fulfil, so I worked on more TH-cam videos whilst doing not-very-nice things to myself and phoning a suicide hotline throughout my work day. I became too afraid to even go on the backend of TH-cam to read any of the comments. Yet, when I was talking to my therapist about it, she asked me how much money I would have to earn for me to feel safe enough to leave TH-cam, I replied that there wasn't enough money that make me want another job, I love this job, which is what your lottery analogy reminded me of. I need a break, but sponsorship deadlines, contracts and the algorithm make it impossible to care for my mental health, and my PhD research is suffering for it.
I like your approach of trying to trick myself into thinking I've already got a Lottery's worth of money in my bank account and making things for fun. It may be a dangerous game to play, but I can't sustain this degree of mental health doing what I'm doing now, so hopefully, in six months, there may be a positive change. Thanks again for making this and making me feel less lonely.

A big part of the burnout I've seen is related to people niching down too much to an unsustainable topic -- like you mentioned with productivity. The people I've seen still succeeding have built their audience around them as a person, allowing them to grow and evolve together.

I never wanted to launch a Ytb channel neither starting my own business to make a living but what I love about your videos is that it gives me a lot to think about choices. Trying to be more aligned with what I want, why, and how.
In the end I won't remember all the Ytb videos I've watched during my whole lifetime but when I decide to watch something, even if the algorithm plays a key role in here, I know why, and listing to some good words is a way to "keep the music inside me to continue to dance my life"

Thanks for making this video Ali, you are one of the few out there promoting a sustainable approach to content creation / business. As a small creator, this gives me comfort knowing that even someone with millions of viewers is thinking the same thoughts. Keep it up!

The infinite game idea - liking it to a marriage or relationship - mind blown. Needed this video. Just passed my 1 year anniversary for my channel on youtube and really do think about how long I would do this for. I so look forward to watching you here for years and years and years to come and to watch you evolve.

Ali, seeing you create videos you enjoy and being able to see the joy, is what makes a lot of us stay and watch. There is something about watching someone do something they love that is motivating. I hope to one day have my TH-cam equivalent :)

Every time, I appreciate your content even more when you talk about your real feelings. The productivity stuffs are handy and good to hear as daily reminders, but the humanity side resonates so well and so deeply. The way you deal with vulnerability is both calm and powerful. That’s something bigger than just a youtube video. Really nice work Ali.

Thank you so much Ali for sharing this! As a new TH-camr in the space there is so much to take from this. But everything you talk about goes so much beyond being a TH-camr, it applies to most things we do in life.

Hey, Ali… I’ve been following your journey for almost over 5 years now. I subscribed to your channel when I was in undergrad. I’m finishing my Masters degree now, and your book helped me get through this MA research report. Thank you so much for all that you do. I personally love these videos, they have become my favourite on your channel. I always look forward to them, and I’m so glad you exist. Thank you for your great energy, thoughts, and insight. This has been a valuable use of my time. I feel really good and inspired to share my content out of service and joy and FEELING GOOD. Instead of profit or monetisation. So, thank you so much for this video. I can’t wait for the next one. MEGA LOVE! 🧡

I’m now a TH-camr and I’ve been using your 100 videos target mark to not put pressure on myself.
Almost at 40 videos with 472 subscribers. I am grateful and happy to grow.

I love this video. This is one of the best videos you've ever made. Please make more like this. This is closely linked to productivity, business, and optimization. Everything that we watch you for.
This! This study and dissection is the practical aspect of these things. The reality checks much needed.

The major takeaway for me was to connect to the goal of service. I started my channel to help people but found myself recently chasing the growth. Hearing you speak reminded me of the original goal. Did I help someone with that video, even one person. Then the video is a success.

Business owner for 15 years. What you're describing sounds exactly like running a business. If your goal is to just make videos, just make them. When you make it a business, you have to run it like a business or you will burn out. Get a coach to help you learn how to delegate, protect your energy, and make it sustainable.

Thank you SO much for creating this video and speaking to the hardships that can come along with youtube and the creative content world. You’re so right that an inherently good thing can turn into a bad or painful thing when we don’t stay grounded and consistently remind ourselves of the most important things-like serving others and giving to the world rather than receiving. I love how you shared your heart and ways that you stay grounded but also how you still find joy in your super uber-successful “thing”. This was SO enlightening and incredibly thoughtful. I am learning so much from you. Thank you for not only sharing your gifts with us but for being who you are. It’s so great seeing this more personal side of you! 🙂

This was really helpful. I've been working with this mindset. I make the videos I need to watch. I record the music I need to record for me. Growth is slow. But I'm happier than I've ever been. The key is as always to differentiate between working IN the business, working ON the business and recognizing the difference between "work" and "Play"

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I experienced a similar burnout earlier in my corporate career, and it has made me hesitant to really engage with creating online content because I am concerned I will get back to that burnout place you’re describing. This video was a great reminder for making sure my priorities and my reasons for creating content are aligned. Thanks for everything you do!

the bit about using as North Star what or how one would be doing it if money weren't the prime object is my one very useful take away. obviously "joy" and "infinite game" bits I had sort of already absorbed either from the crux of your earlier videos, your book or my own life experience

I love your videos, and I have learned a lot from you through out the years. I always appreciate your longer videos. I just feel like I get a lot out of them. Swapping out the order of establishing your lifestyle, and then your goals is really eye-opening. I’m a real estate agent and goals are always heavily pushed, while lifestyle is often not thought about as something you can control until you’re well established in the business.

I don’t really watch many of your videos anymore Ali purely because they can sometimes feel too polished for me but this one was incredible - watched the whole thing. I needed this so much as a new creator still working my 9/5, running a e-commerce business too. Thank you!

I’m only halfway through but something that’s sticking out to me is when you said ‘not making content I want to make and saying what I want to say but what people want to hear’. Like trying to constantly chase the popular topics and churn out content- of course that would burn anyone out. Why not create what you love?

I really love these long chatty videos of yours, Ali. It always strikes me that, although what you are talking about doesn't relate to my life at all on the surface, there is always something valuable I can apply. In this case, I loved the part about the goose and the golden egg and am now thinking that I need to remember to take care of my 'inner goose' in order be able to continue doing and enjoying everything I want to do in life. Thank you :)
