- Snake is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. Spike wants to boost his morale up and asks Joey to cheer him up and bring him bowling. At the bowling alley, Wheels shows up and it's the first time the 3 old members of The Zit Remedy have been back together since Degrassi School's Out

Now I want to shed a tear in tribute to Neil Hope, aka Wheels. 😢 🌹🌹🌹Just a touch of triva, Neil Hope was one of four members to be in all three series of the Degrassi shows (Kids on Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High, Degrassi:The Next Generation). It's really sad that this was the last appearance of Neil Hope on Degrassi, seeing as how he died in such a sad and depressing way. However, I also will say that this is the most appropriate and perfect ending to the Wheels character.
I mean, when you really think about it, Wheels was a character who never blamed himself for his own actions throughout the whole original show. Then, he drives drunk and kills a kid. Which severs his friendship with Snake. And, you couldn't blame Snake for being mad at him. His parents get killed by a drunk driver, then he decides to drive drunk and kill a kid.
Then, the next generation comes around, and he apologizes to Lucy, whom he injured and temporarily blinded while he drove drunk. Then, he flat out admits he drove drunk and killed a kid to Snake. It was a redemption story for Wheels, even though it was very short. And at the end, they reconcile, have a great night together, and sing their song as friends again.
To me, this was a great way to end the Wheels character. It would've been nice to see more of him in the Next Generation, but it sadly wasn't meant to be.
So, Neil Hope, wherever you are, I hope you know that we remember you as the great character you played. You will always be a Degrassi original.
Rest in Peace Neil Hope/Wheels We Miss You.

I heard about Neil Hope's death a few years ago, so sad and so tragic. It's too bad Wheels wasn't a recurring character on the New Generation like Joey was.

Wheels could have been brought back on Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: The New Class as an at-risk teen counselor. Particularly, during the storyline where Sean was screwing up his life. Too bad Neil's death ruined that possibility. :(

I was thinking the same thing. It's too bad he didn't have more of a part in degrassi the next generation. He could have been that character that really helped out the kids that were going thru some hard times like Sean, Craig, Marco, Ellie, just to name a few. It's too bad that never happened.

Joey had such scummy moments at times though, he pissed me off. I love him don’t get me wrong.
he was one of my favorite characters in Degrassi Junior High and High but he was a bully at first but when it came to his friends he always knew how to brighten the mood. He became a good guy later in the series. I think Degrassi High is when he changed but I Love his development and what turned him into the adult he is in TNG and he was an awesome parental figure for Craig. He was there for him more than anybody

Yes it was very sad, if only he would have got back into acting again properly on either Canadian or American tv, he might have still been alive today, they say he was a really nice guy as well
My understanding is that he tried to do so after School's Out, but had little success and had to eventually get a "regular job" that paid a fraction of what he was used to. Eventually led to a depression and lack of motivation for him to pursue anything further, even to just taking care of his own health.
I read the other day he died. I didn't know noone knew for a while.
@@oldtwinsna8347 Yes, it happens alot with Child Stars. Him and Stacie Mistysyn (Caitlyn) not to mention Ainais Granofsky (Lucy) had the strongest ties to Degrassi in their own way. In the 1990's it became a National Issue with The Kids from Diff'Rent Strokes, Eight Is Enough, The Partridge Family and many others. In the UK it's just as bad with Former Boyband/Girlband Icons from the 1990's who find out the hard way "Pop Music Giveth, Pop Music Taketh Away". I wish someone could have counselled him and said "The Life Of A Child Star" doesn't last forever, the chosen few move on and do well for themselves. Hayley Mills did a documentary about life as a Child Star and sometimes it's very challenging. I wish he could have talked to Paul Petersen. He was a Former Mousketeer, did The Donna Reed Show, worked at Motown and was even a Pop Star for a hot Minute but he knew alot of Former Child Stars who fell on hard times and he created A Minor Consideration where "Past" Child Stars "Counsel" the "Current Crop" on how to handle their Fame. I think this is needed now more than ever especially with the problems that Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez went through.
Yes it was very sad. I believe they said he was an alcoholic, and I think that was the cause, or part of the cause of his death. My partner of 12 years is an alcoholic, so this hits me especially hard. People die of this disease, and they don't need to.
- Kinda sad that Neil Hope's real life spiraled downward kinda like his character Wheels; Wheels made a terrible decision & had to live with it for the rest of his life. Snake wanted nothing to do with Wheels UNTIL this scene; after what Wheels said, it opened up Snake's eyes. Everyone goes through difficult times in life but we have to find a way to get through.

ckendall67 In reality Neil Hope came from a rough family his mom and dad were alcoholics his dad died of cirrhosis when he was 14. He had type 1 diabetes.

This is one of the best moments of Degrassi tv history. Three old friends get together and enjoy themselves to get thru a crisis. The saddest part is that it was Neil Hope's last tv appearance.
It's ironic that Wheels killed a kid while driving dunk and his parents were killed by a drunk driver.

I love that Snake opened up to Wheels about his struggle with leukemia. Snake held a grudge on him for years, but yet, Wheels was the one that could relate what Snake was going through.
Wheels was so handsome...both in High School and in this scene! I'm so sad he's gone now.

Wheels could have said "You have no idea how lucky you are you have a Wife and A Daughter and a Baby Boy who love you very much, while you were in University Studying, Working & Travelling, I was in a 8 1/2 by 14 Cell that I shared with people who were just as bad as me, I took the life of a Child, I almost ruined Lucy's life and I didn't tell you this but I apologized t her at The Class Reunion that I didn't attend, I had to do it as part of my Rehabilitation that I learned in AA which is Step #5 where you have to make amends to everyone you hurt, you have a Family to go home to, I have a little place and both My Grandparents are dead."
Laughing Lioness I did feel sorry for Wheels because he did make a mistake he never got over the lost of his parents. Wheels used Alcohol to deal with his pain and in the end he did to others what a drunk 😵 driver did to his parents. Wheels was one of the good guys who was handed some really bad luck he paid for his crimes like a man and tried to become a better person.

Hector Leon snake had cancer that's why he was bald, actually he shaved his head for charity then got the news he had cancer.
I'm glad they got to do this. The three of them remind me of how close me and my buddies were in high school. Now only me and my best friend since then still talk to each other.
This is a very powerful scene. I want to mention how good the music is when Wheels arrives. A beautiful composition that perfectly fits the mood of the moment and the history these characters have. 😀
You know I respect the fact that this show doesnt put heavy makeup on their actors to the point where they look fake, clothes that look like it cost $2000 for the whole outfit, and doesn't make their houses look unrealistically neat and clean. Very authentic and real which I love!
Surprised Neil Hope never got more acting gigs. He's quite talented.

I didn't understand a LICK of this when I saw this episode as a kid, I was just like "who is this dude and what are he and Mr. Simpson talking about?" But since then I've seen the original Jr High/High series and now this scene is so much more poignant for me...

Same here I actually watched the first 5 seasons of Degrassi TNG and then I decided to go back and watch the original on Mega Video back in the day and then I learned so much like Degrassi became a community school from the fire that used to be two schools. I learned who the parents were as teens. I got to see Emma's real father when he was younger. I got to see Emma as a baby and when her mom got pregnant at 13 and the movie ends with a sad ending for most of the characters. The school fire was interesting because it put all the pieces together of how it became Degrassi Community School and it happened at the last school prom. It started making more sense
I didn't know who he was the first few minutes but when he talked about the drunk driving I remembered Snake talking about him at their reunion so I was like "oh ok this is Wheels"
Same here! I found out about DJR and DH from searching episodes to watch and everything made sense from the moment I watched all of the episodes, including School's Out.
If Neil Hope were still alive, I am pretty sure I would be demanding Zit Remedy to play at the next High School Reunion. I want to see more of the OG cast, but I also hope they enroll Jack Simpson day at Degrassi.

Very true. I started out watching TNG and didn't quite understand certain storylines regarding Snake, Joey, Caitlin, Spike, the reason why Spike and Snake had the nicknames they had until I got caught up on Degrassi JH and Degrassi High and School's Out. Then it all began to come full circle.

I really hate that Wheels died and nobody new and he was placed in a grave marked John Doe until his family finally found him. He was an original cast member from the The Kids of Degrassi Street and I've been a fan from the very beginning. RIP Neil Hope

To this day, my favorite Degrassi episode of all-time, from OG to NG, is the poker night one.
i grew up with this show and caught the reruns back when showcase was awesome in the late 90s, so glad they had the chance to do this and film this scene before neil hope died. at least we got a happy ending and a sort of closure to wheels' character and all three happy together singing everybody wants something. this to me is truly the end of the classic degrassi junior high/degrassi high story.

Wheels was one of the saddest character of the show, as he spent a lot of hardship of his home life and being the first character being adopted.
It was sad when he lost his parents and face the reality, when he didn’t just lose one parent but both in the same day and facing the fact.
Losing them and having a parent anymore was really heartbreaking, then life spiralled control and went downhill. As Wheels was the most tragic character of the show.

"We're still here and lived to tell the tale, we can move on with our lives, look at Shane McKay, he's Brain Damaged for the rest of his life, he will always need someone to take care of him, can you imagine how hard it's been on his Family, and although he's grateful for you taking care of Spike & Emma, I know deep in his heart he'd give anything to have your life."

@@oooh19agreed I like that they showed the reality of the depression and anxiety that cancer patients go through. My grandmother who her whole life was always so physically healthy nearly indestructible. In 2016 she was diagnosed with terminal uterine cancer. It’s a long scary journey. She lived for another 6 years before she passed away in 2022. She struggled a lot of with how to live life with the cancer and it’s common for cancer patients to not want to tell their families how scared they really are. Because they don’t want their families to worry even more. It’s a hard painful journey I don’t wish on anyone.

I remember not understanding this scene AT ALLLLL when it happened. I'm the same age as Emma and never watched the old degrassi. I knew it existed, I don't know if I knew when this episode premiered or not. But I just finished Degrassi High and the movie and it all fits now. Lol.

I think this is one of those scenes that stuck with me. I grew up on TNG, so I’m not familiar with the older generation. But Wheels saying “you have to keep fighting” stuck with me when I was growing up and it kept me from letting my depression kill me.
You gotta watch the older seasons they’re all free on TH-cam and it puts this scene into an even deeper perspective, these dudes were some of the main characters in the old seasons and I won’t give any spoilers but in the last episode (the movie) it gets crazy it might be some of the craziest shit to ever happen on any season of Degrassi. I grew up on Next Class but I think the original Degrassi was better, TNG was my favorite but it comes close.
Just finished binging the entire of degrassi and this is one scene that really stood out. Old friends

Joey is naked without his iconic hat. I felt the same way when Caitlin stopped wearing her headband. Even Spike looks off without her punk hairdos.

I just watched Degrassi high on Tubi… I know it’s here on TH-cam but I wish DJH was also available on Tubi as well. I’m currently toward the end of Degrassi: School’s Out (googled etc… after watching Degrassi high on Tubi). But having only read about it and seen this scene solely/only watching TNG…. It didn’t (fully) hit me how emotional, deeply meaningful and important this scene was… until now. Also Tessa Campanile..

I remember being SO confused about this episode when it first aired because I hadn't watched the Jr or High school series yet. Now, that I've seen both, I love how the actors playing Snake, Joey, and Wheels were all actually friends in real life too. That makes Neil Hope's (Wheels) death even sadder. He was a really good actor, especially as a kid on the Jr high seasons.

Both of Wheels' scenes in TNG were iconic. The one here and the one they only showed in Canada with Lucy. It's on TH-cam now. I wish we could have seen more of him on TNG .

I grew up on DeGrassi TNG and recently started watching the original series from the late 80s/early 90s. After watching a young Joey and Snake, and getting to know who Wheels is and what happened with him, that “everybody wants something” scene hits different!!
I've always loved the friendship the 3 of them share.

I watched DNG all the way through awhile black before I watched DJH and DH so this scene didn't nessissarally catch me the first time. I kind of recall watching the scene because of the seriousness of having cancer and causing a fatal drunken accident, I knew they must have been old friends obviously but I didn't understand how deep it went. Now that I went back and watched all of DJH, DH and the movie that followed all on TH-cam very recently, I am so glad this scene was recommended.
The fact that Snake never forgave him or reached out until he showed up to give him hope shows that despite their argument in School’s Out, it’s amazing

Did they? The closest I can remember to one was a dance they had made plans to go to; but when Spike learned that Snake initially wanted to ask Michelle out (a girl he was crushing on, and who liked him back), she politely bowed out by saying she couldn't get a sitter for Emma.
