  • There have been plenty of nasty weapons throughout the history of mankind, but what is it that makes some weapons too inhumane to be used in war?

      The decisive point is the kill/cripple rate.
      A war fought with blinding lasers can go on much longer and might leave a country with 2/3 of the population blinded forever. A war fought with bullets and other weapons primarily build to kill would have long since ended by that time.

    • @yraco1232
      @yraco1232 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes but a bullet to the eye is also quite likely to kill you so while they would both have the same effect on survivors a bullet makes it a lot more likely for them to die instead of just being blinded for the rest of their lives.

      Also, a lot of this came out of people not really understanding conventional weapons yet.
      Chlorine gas was used at a time where we were just figuring out that charging at machine guns with a horse and a sword was a bad idea. It was untrodden territory so no one really had a grasp on things yet.
      ----
      Not to mention indiscriminate weapons often directly destroy the entire thing you are at war to obtain.
      Want to take over a highly profitable rubber tree trade in south america? Bombing the rubber fields is probably the worst possible way to go about things.
      Want to take over a population so their means of production benefit your country instead of someone elses? killing them REALLY lowers the work output they have.
      Want to take over defensible town? Carpet bombing the entire place into dust directly destroys any defensible positions.
      ---
      Do you want ANYTHING within a mile radius? Using a Dirty Bomb makes the area uninhabitable and too costly to reclaim for your own use.
      Just by the fact that 99.99999999% of wars have been "I want your resources" or "I want your power" destroying the resources or people who want power over is a direct loss to you... Meaning many parts of the geneva convention actually BENEFIT YOU if you follow them correctly.

      Actually it's usually the inverse. Gas for example is good against unprepared civilians and militias, but in conventional warfare sucks because it's difficult to control and can be defeated with the right equipment. So it was banned.
      Then there's undetectable mines. Sure during war they can kill enemy combatants, but experience dictates more often than not it's the same guys who placed the mines who end up blow up. So it was banned.
      Triangular bayonets and knives. Create a wound impossible to field treat, but also lack versatility (a normal combat knife is more of a tool that doubles as weapon than a weapon that doubles as a tool), don't kill quickly and are in general obsolete as a weapon. Banned.
      Hollow point ammunition (in conventional combat). Devastating on humans, but easily defeated by any kind of armour. Banned.
      White phosphorus incendiary devices. These ones are complicated because it doubles as chemical weapon on top of an incendiary one. Still there are better usage for White Phosphorus than incendiary devices, and there are plenty other weapons to burn things with. Banned.
      Bacteriological weapons. Nearly always backfire. Banned.

      As much as people don't like to admit it, "winning an argument" doesn't mean that you're right, it just means that you had the advantage in the debate and people agreed wih you rather than agreeing with the other person. Even if you're wrong, you can still win a n argument. So, thinking that giving land to people just because the country won the argument is a good idea is pretty stupid, since it can be abused just as much as everything else.
      I suppose that if our world really became like that, that would just make politics even shadier than it already is, with everyone manipulating facts and information and pressuring lower countries (lower countries economically or military) into giving in. Of course all of this already happens, but the point is that it would be even worse than now.

      Its not a law, but more of a "Gentlemens agreement". Imagine two men settling a dispute with a violence, after agreeing that they want to avoid permanent injuries, so moves like eye gouging are out of the question. This way a lethal outcome is avoided. In the same way conventional warfare is not about killing, but instead forcing their acceptance of what ever goal started the war (say a land-grab, political dispute, or rescource based conflict). Once they accept this there is no further quarrel and any permanent damage you have caused to your "enemy" nation is counter-productive to your future relations with them, and to your own economy from potential trade with them.

      Every other country in the world who agreed to the rules. Lets say Britain went to war with France. France uses a forbidden weapon. Now other countries that France has deals with are going to see that France is untrustworthy and a deal breaker and so will put sanctions on France, possibly cut ties with them and maybe even join in thew war to punish France for being a dick to Britain.
      Now once the war is finished France will also likely have to pay Britain money as compensation.

    • @thunderbird1921
      @thunderbird1921 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some of the brutal combat did reach the American press actually. Director John Ford made the 1951 documentary "This is Korea" (which is here on TH-cam) and newsreels covered it some too. The combat was horrifyingly brutal, North Korea literally made enslaved captured teens fight in their army, and the US-led coalition had to regularly use napalm to drive the Communist forces out of the forests, mountains, and abandoned villages (which often were reduced to rubble and ashes). I'm not sure exactly how many communities the fighting between the two sides destroyed, but the groups of homeless refugees fleeing south stretched for literally miles. Those poor people had just been trying to live quiet lives, and then their peninsula became a massive ideological battleground. Even American generals like MacArthur were horrified by how violent the battles and overall conflict got.

You don't wan't the local civilians to be your mortal enemies, since then they aren't civilians anmore but just enemies with highly variable threatlevel. That's some kind of non funny situation you don't actually wan't.

    So what exactly stops a superpower such as US from using these prohibited weapons? You say it's "prohibited" but so what? Who's going to enforce punishment for ignoring the prohibition? This whole idea of banning certain methods of warfare seems pretty absurd if not ridiculous.

    • @scottdezell6238

      La mastro. Think of it as a "gentlemens agreement": I.e everyone could make use of these weapons without "legal" repercussions, but since no one wants to be targeted by them, People have agreed not to use them. Think of these rules for warfare like settling a dispute with a fistfight where you agree "No hits below the belt, and no eye gouging". Either part in the fist fight can choose to break the agreement, but the moment they do, they will be targeted by the same dirty tricks by their opponent. Also everone spectating the fight can lose respect for the "dealbreaker" or even join the fight to punish them.

      196 countries that as long as they avoid nuclear methods, would statistaclly still lose if working together which even that is unlikly because everyone whether they want to admitt it or not are afraid of us.
      look at pearl harbor and pre american entrance int WWI uboat sinkings. They are all scared and either secretly want us gone or an their side. Whether idiotic liberal want to admit it or not we lead the world from a military stand point.
      the only thing that reallly scares us are nukes and in realitly if we were quick enough, we could nuke all forign stronghold in several times over and still have surplus.

    so we are able to use guns to kill people in war but not blind them?

    • @Logarithm906
      @Logarithm906 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yup. The intention of humane weapons is to swiftly kill outright. Blinding lasers are intended to maim not kill.
      Logically however it makes sense to blind combatants. Injured but alive enemy soldiers take up a lot of an enemy's resources and infrastructure, unlike a body bag (which the brits noticed in ww1 when we eventually gave our tommies helmets, all of a sudden our hospitals got overwhelmed with soldiers being injured by shells bursting overhead instead of getting outright killed).
      The point of war is to destroy your enemy's ability to fight. Typically you do that by destroying their soldiers but equally you can just cut off or make them consume additional resources.
      Eg if you can destroy their weaponry you can end a war without even killing anyone. If you starve them they won't have the energy to fight.

    When you said napalm was more deadly than the two atomic bombs that was a HUUUGGGE understatement. Upper estimates of the amount of casualties in the firebombing of Tokyo would suggest that it’s possible that more people died in one sustained bombing raid using napalm in a populated area than both atomic bombs, so if you count all the times it was used in the entire war, it likely laps the total death toll of both atomic bombs several times.

    Fun fact: Up until May 2016, the USA sold cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia that were use in civilian areas in Yemen. That's how empty these treaties are.

    "Once the dust of the second World War settled, America enjoyed relative peace until the disastrous Vietnam War" What about the Korean War? Heck, we're technically still at war with North Korea.

      because its not an official war...I don't know what education you have but it obviously sucks

      @Eara Soulous - The Korean War was exactly as much an "official war" as the Vietnam War, both beginning as "police actions" to skirt a congressional vote. The Korean War was every bit as bloody a war that saw over 33,000 US soldiers killed in its 3 years compared to 47,000 over 20 years in Vietnam. Involvement in the Vietnam War was declared over by President Gerald Ford on April 23, 1975. No such declaration has ever been made regarding Korea.
      Now to turn your crude accusation around; I don't know what education you have but sentences begin with a capital letter, "it's" with an apostrophe is the contraction for "it is" versus "its" as a possessive form of "it", and sentences end with a punctuation mark. I suggest before saying someone else's education "obviously sucks", make sure you don't have a factual error and 3 grammatical errors in your statement. 4 errors in 17 words is embarrassing enough without having your accusation blow up in your face too.

      @Alex Mills - I agree and feel free to take that up with the video creator. My reason for quoting this statement from his video was to say "Hey, wait, don't forget about the Korean War. Watch some MASH reruns, that conflict was horrible and was never formally declared over either."
