got into double special a few days ago, it feels so good to not have to farm heavy ammo for half an hour before a damage phase and it gives a lot more options for weapon combos that do real damage edit : well r.i.p.
it's worth mentioning that if you're low on special ammo when running double special, simply get a few kills with your heavy. Like, really few, you're pretty much guaranteed a green brick within the first 5 kills, and considering just how much heavy ammo you get with double special it's usually well worth it.
I tend to find special finisher on the class item helpa ton as well. With how easy it is to generate orbs, you can quickly get 3 armor charge, and with the mod that gives an overshield durring finishers (also a class item mod, forgot its name), you are practically unkillable durring the finisher. The times I find I run out of ammo is when there are fewer adds in an encounter, as my team usually kills them before I can get a finisher.
I think part of why the Exotic Primary + Special is as high as it is, beyond the normal "it makes sense," is that Wish-Ender and Malfeasance right now are absolute monsters and are doing special weapon levels of damage without the ammo limitations. These are honestly some of the only primary weapons that ever end up in my loadouts because they're just too damn good.
Just a heads up the reckoning shotgun and the new iron banner fusion rifle both roll with Discord which allows you infinite special ammo as long as you switch back and forth thus making double specials more efficient. Discord is truly an S-Tier perk when used the right way.
There are also a few sniper rifles that get it (The Supremacy, Last Foray, Mercurial Overreach), but usually you won't be using a sniper in a way that takes advantage of it.
Double special feeds you heavy - but heavy kills also feed you special. Destiny seems to give you ammo much more frequently if it's not the gun you're using. If you have a heavy that can also be used on ads, that can help give you green, so you can then use that and go back to making purple. There are a few activities where you burn through so much ammo that double special can be tricky but not many.
it helps having a special weapon with lead from gold since a heavy brick can give you special ammo. If you have Hollow Denial and Riptide with Lead From Gold you are fine on special
This kind of load honestly works great with those subclass with natural quick cooldowns, using specific fragments. It's a trap to use slow ttk primary unless it's ability tied.

Also side note, using double special and low-ish on ammo, if you get a kill with your heavy there is ALMOST a guaranteed chance of getting some special.
Great video, one thing that i have experienced is that if I’m running double specials and need special ammo. I just equip my heavy and kill something with my melee. It spawns special ammo. If i need heavy simply equip special weapon and kill something with a melee and it drops ammo every time whenever it is needed

Been running double special since early Lightfall, and gotta say, it is amazing. I personally still use finders, so I can also throw on a scout mod for my team, but it's good to know that I can be more fluid in my load out. Personally dying for Destiny to add a legendary kinetic/strand/stasis trace so I can use an energy exotic, but even with a slightly restricted loadout with traces in the special, being a lightshow with freakin laser beams is always fun. Anyway, thanks for doing the work and collecting the data. The Destiny community never fails to amaze me with the spreadsheet proficiency.

Since they made the switch to abilities having better uptime and it's a lot easier to stun champions It's been a hot minute since I used a primary ammo weapon.
Basically why I always use double special especially when running an ability focused build, though until now I never had hard data to backup my observations.
Buuuut there is also a very unique game setting that reduces drops. Base easy content gives heavy galore, while harder content spawns significantly less. Source 2700hrs of Destiny.
So I rock a Heavy Ammo Finder mod. Good to know that special weapons are next to useless in getting that bonus to proc. Also good to know that exotic primaries don't have the god-tier boost to Heavy drops that the description alludes to.
Whenever I do daily bounties and farm them in Lost Sectors, I get ONE heavy ammo with heavy ammo finder mod equipped. But when I unequip them, I instantly get two bricks of 6! Thanks Bungoo!
The main situation, after watching this video, I see lumina being used the most in dps settings. The damage boost provided is easy to get and is the highest buff multiplier in the game
I think an area that a majority of specials lack that make it unappealing to most is range. You can use a sniper sure, but in pve most people are not gonna use one. I think the best double special for raids and dungeons would hands down be witherhoard with a trace rifle
I've only recently started running double special loadouts and yeah, the ammo economy is pretty wild. I never run out of heavy and rarely run out of special ammo
So basically what i got out of this is that my double special build is being hindered by using scavenge mods. Thats very interesting and really good to know.

I think it would be hard to justify reserve mods. Things hit really hard now days, and you really need to use resistance mods. That being said I use loadouts to swap to a reserve mod loadout, rally at the flag, then swap back to my normal mods.
@@MoonDystopia Be mindful when doing this and swap back as soon as you have full ammo. Something funky happens with surge mods when you start swapping around.
The one application I'm aware of for keeping reserve mods on (outside the rallying thing) is that if you can get a rocket launcher to 10 reserves (varies by rocket; look up Court's infographic on rocket launchers) you get an extra rocket per brick. How useful this is varies; right now double special tends to give you more heavy than you can use anyway, but in the event of a double special nerf, this might become more important.
Been using double special since season of the haunted. It really is the best way... I never run out of ammo in dungeons.... Seriously when I run around, after a damage phase or 2, there will be like 5-6 spare heavy bricks around.... Green bricks there'd be nearly 20 lol. It's insane.
Well that explains my problem with ammo, at least the heavy ammo anyways when running double special but I some h keep running out of special like 80% of the time in any activity
It’s even more effective when a warlock can use the new cenotaph mask along with any trace rifle to spawn a lot of special and heavy ammo. Heck warlock’s cenotaph mask and any hunter or titan aeon shoulders… INFINITE AMMO!
Been hooked on Izanagis plus a wave gl as my double special loadout for a little bit now and its great for dmg and ammo economy. I use a gl with lead from gold so im never without ammo

Very nicely done! Excellent work. Got to find your 🎣 video. I hope it's as sensible as this one. I'm tired of the fish exploit videos. There are no tricks that I could find. I catch an exotic fish about every 100 casts ,legendary every 25. So ..casting 250 times in one session I'll average 2 to 3 exotic fish, 8 to 10 legendary fish, and the rest are Zavala's cat food. Fishing is a really time-consuming activity. Grind for hours for the bait, then an hour to fish to find bungie holds back fish from the pond. Cod duello's have just returned after 3 weeks. I admit I've lost precious little pieces of bait too to either nodding off and pressing X too soon,or because a Gaurdian decided to cast their super into the pond out of frustration or in hopes that it'll help yield an exotic.

I think I used double special every once in a while way back when, but honestly I was having too much fun with primaries like Sunshot, Riskrunner, Night Watch, Bad News, Nature of the Beast, etc. And I eventually forgot about it. But this video is excellent, and I'm glad it's out there!

Recently tried running double specials, wondering how exactly it worked. I think I found your video before trying it, but only watched it afterwards. That said, it's good to hear the math on the subject, and maybe this might become more common loadout for me.
I didn't check but I suspect there is no difference. Bungie specifically targeted exotic primaries with the ammo buffs. That being said they could have always messed up due to spaghetti code!
Seems like if you intend to rock a primary weapon at all the most you should ever allocate toward ammo mods is 1 scavenger and 1 finder, and ONLY if you're using low capacity weapons like Rockets. Assuming you can afford to slot them in.
There is also an internal cooldown for Heavy Bricks and Special Bricks. Changing load zones (ie running out to reset a lost sector, assuming no one in the open world kills an enemy that drops a brick when you enter that world state), then re-entering a load zone after 30-40 seconds will engage special ammo guarantee on kill, up to 2x on first kill when 0 special equipped, and 1x heavy brick when no heavy in slot. When running double special and heavy, doing the same thing will net you same results with 1-2 bricks/kill + possibility of 3x total bricks (2x special + 1x heavy) from that mob.
This is excellent data. I just got an amazing Stornghold and working on some good sword builds. I saw where glaive with sword is helpful and this data kind of adds to it. Time to try out double special in my sword build. 👍
Double special is 100% the play, I like to use the cenotaph mask on warlock with prometheus lens to substitute for my primary: - It has a base inventory size of 100 (holds 600 total, including the loaded mag) which allows for slightly more ammo to be picked up per brick, lasting longer. - It has an AoE attack and also incandescent - It has decent single-target thanks to applying scorch over time for ignitions, also giving it anti-unstoppable capabilities. I could see hollow denial being excellent too due to having the lead from gold perk available on it, here's a quick breakdown: - Enhanced Killing Tally + Enhanced Battery grants 104 mag size. - 2x Void Reserves mods will get you to 100 inventory size. - The above 2 combined results in a total ammo count of 624 - Enhanced Lead From Gold grants you 35% of your special weapon's total ammo count upon heavy brick pickup. (halved if you have 2 weapons with lead from gold equipped) - Per heavy brick pickup, you will get 219 ammo. Or more than 2 full clips, which is crazy. Then there is just generic good synergy between killing tally and cenotaph mask. Oh God now I have to go try this. Great video you earned yourself a subscription!

Excellent breakdown. I was grinding GM's all weekend and noticed that I wasn't spawning jack shit with the coldheart and two special ammo finders. Now I know ive been wasting my time with ammo mods. I've also been skeptical of using double specials because of how stingy/fearful bungie is with special ammo economy. Its like they have beef with special weapons or something. Thanks again!
If I'm going to use double special, I always opt out the ammo finder and scout mods. I just use heavy weapon to spawn a special ammo and I'll use special weapon to get heavy ammo.
I just don't personally enjoy double special loadouts. Just haven't found that pairing that I like yet. Mostly because I enjoy sweet business too much.

The legendary trace rifle selection now is pretty darn good , I use these as my primary now and I haven't looked back

Arbalest with a trace rifle for higher chunk dps at range + barrier as well, or chill clip fusion and trace for that nice freeze effect

Been hooked on Izanagis plus a wave gl as my double special loadout for a little bit now and its great for dmg and ammo economy. I use a gl with lead from gold so im never without ammo

Very nicely done! Excellent work. Got to find your 🎣 video. I hope it's as sensible as this one. I'm tired of the fish exploit videos. There are no tricks that I could find. I catch an exotic fish about every 100 casts ,legendary every 25. So ..casting 250 times in one session
I'll average 2 to 3 exotic fish, 8 to 10 legendary fish, and the rest are Zavala's cat food.
Fishing is a really time-consuming activity. Grind for hours for the bait, then an hour to fish to find bungie holds back fish from the pond. Cod duello's have just returned after 3 weeks. I admit I've lost precious little pieces of bait too to either nodding off and pressing X too soon,or because a Gaurdian decided to cast their super into the pond out of frustration or in hopes that it'll help yield an exotic.

If you want, scavengers do have some use. Really though you shouldn't need any mods with double specials and DEFINITELY don't use finders with it.

Funnily enough that was never the point! I really just wanted some data as that's what I tend to do on the channel. Having been a long time double special weapon user I couldn't resist the urge to cap the video off the way I did especially after gathering the data!
I think I used double special every once in a while way back when, but honestly I was having too much fun with primaries like Sunshot, Riskrunner, Night Watch, Bad News, Nature of the Beast, etc. And I eventually forgot about it. But this video is excellent, and I'm glad it's out there!

Recently tried running double specials, wondering how exactly it worked. I think I found your video before trying it, but only watched it afterwards. That said, it's good to hear the math on the subject, and maybe this might become more common loadout for me.

What about an Exotic Special Weapon?
I didn't check but I suspect there is no difference. Bungie specifically targeted exotic primaries with the ammo buffs.
That being said they could have always messed up due to spaghetti code!

Seems like if you intend to rock a primary weapon at all the most you should ever allocate toward ammo mods is 1 scavenger and 1 finder, and ONLY if you're using low capacity weapons like Rockets. Assuming you can afford to slot them in.
There is also an internal cooldown for Heavy Bricks and Special Bricks. Changing load zones (ie running out to reset a lost sector, assuming no one in the open world kills an enemy that drops a brick when you enter that world state), then re-entering a load zone after 30-40 seconds will engage special ammo guarantee on kill, up to 2x on first kill when 0 special equipped, and 1x heavy brick when no heavy in slot. When running double special and heavy, doing the same thing will net you same results with 1-2 bricks/kill + possibility of 3x total bricks (2x special + 1x heavy) from that mob.
The smartest titan out here not gonna lie, huge respect 🫡
This is excellent data. I just got an amazing Stornghold and working on some good sword builds. I saw where glaive with sword is helpful and this data kind of adds to it. Time to try out double special in my sword build. 👍
Double special is 100% the play, I like to use the cenotaph mask on warlock with prometheus lens to substitute for my primary:
- It has a base inventory size of 100 (holds 600 total, including the loaded mag) which allows for slightly more ammo to be picked up per brick, lasting longer.
- It has an AoE attack and also incandescent
- It has decent single-target thanks to applying scorch over time for ignitions, also giving it anti-unstoppable capabilities.
I could see hollow denial being excellent too due to having the lead from gold perk available on it, here's a quick breakdown:
- Enhanced Killing Tally + Enhanced Battery grants 104 mag size.
- 2x Void Reserves mods will get you to 100 inventory size.
- The above 2 combined results in a total ammo count of 624
- Enhanced Lead From Gold grants you 35% of your special weapon's total ammo count upon heavy brick pickup. (halved if you have 2 weapons with lead from gold equipped)
- Per heavy brick pickup, you will get 219 ammo. Or more than 2 full clips, which is crazy.
Then there is just generic good synergy between killing tally and cenotaph mask. Oh God now I have to go try this.

Ammo finder? Rarelly worth it for me, since I like to run double special. Scavenger on the other hand... I always have one when I don't need 3 surges.
I actually get value out of the finders, cuz i main wish ender, the exotic primary thats actually a special. bricks galore
Yeah, some exotics are worth using on their own. At that point the bricks are just a nice bonus.

Excellent breakdown. I was grinding GM's all weekend and noticed that I wasn't spawning jack shit with the coldheart and two special ammo finders. Now I know ive been wasting my time with ammo mods. I've also been skeptical of using double specials because of how stingy/fearful bungie is with special ammo economy. Its like they have beef with special weapons or something. Thanks again!

If I'm going to use double special, I always opt out the ammo finder and scout mods. I just use heavy weapon to spawn a special ammo and I'll use special weapon to get heavy ammo.
I just don't personally enjoy double special loadouts. Just haven't found that pairing that I like yet. Mostly because I enjoy sweet business too much.
