Easy way, put the master link in first, hang the chain on the gears, THEN slide the gears on.

I have a 1984 John Deere 430 garden tractor that I finished restoring about a year ago. It is complete and I have been looking for a PTO tiller for a year. Anything John Deere is out of the question given the thousands I spent getting the tractor in new condition. I bought a Titan 48" tiller with chain drive. I could have bought the gear drive and after watching you is the exact reason I didn't. That was a very easy repair. Now I need change the oil in the PTO if I can figure out what it takes.

It's not to bad...I just wish the repair links were a little tougher. Thanks for watching.

Deere can go to hell with ripoff parts prices. Period.
I stopped buying Deere about 20 years ago.
    Stay gold.

I would have taken some time to clean that chain up, remove that old chunk gasket around the cover and clean up all the gear oil residue on the machine it self.

I was afraid you were going to say that! Thank you though for the response!

Where were you able to find the replacement sprockets?

Yes...but I had to go through John Deere and they cost me a small fortune.

height of the teeth shows cause of breaking is slipping chain?? just a guess, but hopefully the new gear cures it

I guess that's possible but the failure point is typically the repair link that I use to fix the chain each time it breaks. John Deere sells a repair link that is fairly easy to install but it doesn't hold up well under a bind.
