Apple's full featured, yet tiny laptop, the PowerBook G4 12 Inch. Tiny enough to fit in your backpack, but powerful enough to edit your latest DV video!
Also, one of Apple's more challenging laptops to reach the hard drive, which of course we have to do!
Along the way we reinstall OSX 10.4 from USB using the Open Firmware method.

I love that laptop. Such a compact, well featured computer. Great video too! Loved the chill vibe and learned a new trick on getting the OpenFirmware to boot to USB!
Agree. It’s very nifty.
Sorbet Leopard runs a treat on the Ali G4s... makes them still usable in todays age (just). I have a 15" running morph OS and it flies...
Yes I’ve yet to try Sorbet Leopard 👍
Just checking in (from our Older YT Support group). Great editing. Professionally done. I do all my work from my iMac desktop. Cheers to you! 🥤
Awesome thank you!
Beautiful video! I love the 12” g4. Such a pretty machine.
It is lovely! And so well packaged.
great as always, maybe use another powerbook to install through firewire to save yourself a slow usb install
Tbh by the time i setup another machine and find the FireWire cable I’ve already done it with my usb stick.
Thanks for the comment!
Sweet! Now I need to dig up my TiBook. It's literally my only "New World" Mac that I got left after I sold my iMac G3
Love my TiBook! I still use one regularly to host an AppleTalk server
Really wish there had been something with the aesthetics of the Clamshell iBooks, but with the power and size of these PowerBooks. Closest you can get afaik is an iBook G4 with the screen cover off of an early iBook G3 DualUSB swapped over, stripped and repainted. No solution for the bottom chassis, since the screw standoffs for the G3 DualUSB and G4 were different. :(
Really enjoyed the video!
Sounds like a real Frankenstein! But also a fun bit of tinkering. Thanks for the comment!
@@TheBasementChannel No problem!
Fun taking these apart! 😁 That is a beauty
I guess ‘fun’ is one way to explain it 😅
This video gave me a glimmer of hope - I have a 1.5Ghz model with the same lit but blank screen problem - unfortunately I'm pretty sure on mine the screen data cable is broken as it remains blank.
You have a memory problem on yours - there's 256Mb on the motherboard, your added card should bring it up to 768Mb.
I wondered about the memory, thanks for clarifying. Probably not fixable I’d imagine.
Maybe bump the RAM to 1Gb - more than enough for Tiger :)
@@squeezingtheapple6990 i just use what I have laying around, 512 was the biggest i could find!
Omg I took one of these apart in 2007…I swore I’d never do it again.
It’s a mission for sure. Probably gets easier each time?
I have an iMac G4 17 and I love it. I have sworn to myself though to not get into Powerbook G4s. Oh man goddamnit now you infected me!
It makes perfect sense, your iMac needs some friends!
Nice retro video so far!👍
Thanks so much!
i have one of these but it really needs some work. the case is dented so the dvd drive is unusable, it’s about third hand now but it still works plan on doing some mods to improve on it :)
Take the case off and panel beat it straight again. I’ve got one that’s held together literally with packing tape. Still works! 😂
great video
Thanks Paul!
Great video. Do the other 2 work?
Let’s get out today and see! Fun activities.
Can you install another OS alongside Mac OS ?
Probably, but it has to run on PowerPC. Maybe morphOS?
