First DC-8 of Delta was N801E which was delivered on July 21, 1959 for the 2nd slide. My bad :P

Great video.... I just seem to remember those suckers were longer than pictured. I was a DL F/A and loved the DC-8.... running meals on that thing was a great workout.

As a kid, my very first flight was with Delta in '69, and my first time on a "big, 4-engine" jet was a Delta DC-8 stretch from ATL to JFK. The airline, and this plane, will always hold a special place in my heart and mind.

Unlike the Boeing 707, the Douglas DC-8 never seemed to age, and had a perpetual smile! It was a beautiful bird--especially the stretched series!

My Dad flew these as a very Captain. Included DC-3, DC-4, DC-7, DC-8, DC-9, CV-440, CV-880, B-727, B747, and his favorite the L-1011. Capt. Loyd Freeman. I miss my dad. I grew up flying many warbirds and antiques that he bought and sold.
Dad was a true pilot that also flew jet fighters.

I loved flying the DC-8. The 63 was my favorite. First four engine type rating I worked for.

My first experience of how bad it hurts to get skydrol hydraulic fluid in your eyes was when I was bleeding the brake lockout debost valves on a DAL dc8-61 jet in the ATL mtc hanger. Still have a small bottle of castor oil in my tool box that I used for eye drops so i could open my eyes without the burn.

Great Video! The -51 must’ve been a big plane in the 50’s and early 60’s, but now the -51 looks comparable to the A321!

Video = A, Music = F. The DC-8 was actually a superior a/c to the 707; Douglas being late to the game is what hurt it in number of deliveries. Oh, how I'd love to see the DC-8 and 707 back in our skies again.

Delta had 2 short DC-8s. One was a DC-8-51 and the other was DC-8-33. The 33s were old Pan Am aircraft. They also had 2 stretch DC-8s. One was a DC-8-61 and the other was DC-8-72. The 72s were 61s converted with GE engines, air cycle machine instead of freons and they removed the turbo compressors and used direct engine bleed.

Too bad I wasn’t alive back then. I would’ve liked to have flown on a 707 or DC-8 back when they were brand new. Problem is, their turbojet engines are supposedly louder than modern day turbofans plus I’d probably have to deal with people smoking during each flight.

If you are going to take pictures off of Airliners.net, you need to get permission from the site, photographers and show photo credits. At least one of the pictures here is one of my original images taken at Dayton Oh in 1977
