I had flew the ZS ZAN Lebombo on the Johannesburg - New York City in the early 1990s. It had everything you could ask for from a trans-atlantic cruiser. Luxury leather seats and both personal screens and a giant one. Those days, airlines used to have well detailed manuals about the aircraft; engine type, power, etc.
It was also considered to be one of the best airlines in the world. Boeing even got some of their customer needs for the aircraft from SAA, It was in the days of the orange tails. And, to think that orange tails returned to the South African skies, for a while unfortunately, with Mango Airways.
@@GoodVideos4 And to think that I was berated on TH-cam by an Aussie plane spotter from Perth because I liked the orange springbok tails.. He said that the springbok tail was racist. Unbelievable !!
@@tonynz9954 I remember you mentioning that before. It is yes. And, Australia had even worse racism than South Africa. In South Africa they were pushed aside. In Australia they had ruthless treatment. In the late 1980's the outside world was very hostile towards South Africa. Yet, there were countries, like elsewhere in Africa, that had far worse atrocities. But, that didn't mean much, or anything, to the outside world. And, the two countries that picked on South Africa the most, were the two countries that had the most to hide, namely the USA and Australia. And, the kangaroo tail would not be regarded as racist.
@@GoodVideos4 Very well said. Hypocrisy is rife especially in the USA and Australia. Let's not forget that the British used to go Abbo hunting for sport in colonial times. They had not imported foxes back then.
@@tonynz9954 Late to the conversation, but I'm pretty sure they meant the livery was offensive due to the connotations of it. While the springbok livery is utterly gorgeous, the era of South Africa it's associated with is the issue, not the livery's design at all. It would be a potential similar negative reaction if Korean Air brought back the livery they had prior to their current one as a retro livery due to the association to the shootdown indicidents of KAL flight 902 and 007.
I flew on the last 747 flight from Or Tambo to Luanda. The plane was on the way to Europe somewhere on its last flight. It was manned with many older crew some which worked on it from the 70's.
Especially nowadays - just look at the A380/747-8 orders - nothing compared to how the 747-400 was. Even in the 2000s they were turning their noses up at the A340-500/-600s, which only sold 130 examples I believe.
Guys, im not sure if ZS-SAZ was the final 747-400. If you can find info, feel free to tell me :)

It must be zs-sav i think
1987-1990is SAL
Yes it was the only planes I saw in 2007 2008 2009 and 2010 were zs-saz and zs-sau
Yes you are correct, ZS-SAZ was South African’s last 747-400, leaving the fleet in September 2011.

I still remember those days. Every specification of the aircraft in SAA's fleet was in the Flying Springbok.
Hey Unity was the music I used in my most recent vid! Great vid and #Savethe747's

The old color scheme (with ''flyer'' Springbok) should return to SAA/SAL aircraft.
A once proud and efficient airline. SAA now sadly going bankrupt.

Very interesting 👌🏾👌🏾. This machines are huge
the 747's livery from 1971-1980 is a good livery, want to see it on a 747-8
I also thought that it was a good livery. When it changed in 1981, they should have just changed the tail part, on the 747s.
A good livery anyway, with the orange tails.
Orange tails also returned to the South African skies, for a while unfortunately, with Mango Airways.
Thanks for my request
Good luck, well done
PAA 707 is being made right now :)
2:10 This aircraft crashed near the Mauritius Island due to a on-board cargo fire
I liked the vid, and Unity is a good song.
Such a beautiful livery😍simple yet colorful

R.I.P Helderberg 747-200 ): cause fire is unknown. The aircraft is B747-200B Combi Aircraft between Passenger and Cargo.
R.I.P :(
it was a 747-300M
It was a 747-200 .The 747-300 was not there at that time.
We all know the Helderberg was carrying unstable space rocket fuel - for SA satellite programme.
@@johnlamb3101 That's incorrect...

I've seen their A340-600s fly across Africa to Europe and back... I kind of wish I could fly one of those!

SAA retired their 747's but why do they didn't retire their a340's until now?
They think the a340 was more efficent but it was actually not

THE 747-400 Was still young man
Muhammad Fadhiil Not really, the average fleet age is roughly 18-22 years, thus the 744 was retired on time, and just aren’t fuel efficient.

Too many 747 history because the Boeing 747 is the most successful aircraft aviation in history
No it isn't, it's the Boeing 737. They're currently assembling their 10,000th example.

Yep.
747 is now falling, infact quad-jets are now falling. Only twin-jets are now successful like the 737(-100 to MAX 10)
