  • Garmisch Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze are famous for the Winter Olympics of 1936 and the more recent Kandahar World Cup Downhill Ski Race. In the first part of this series, you'll see how I took the Deutsche Bahn high-speed train from Hamburg down to Garmisch, transferring in Munich, checked into the Hotel Königshof, and went to rent my gear and pick up my lift ticket.
    Here in Part 2, I finally get up on the mountain to see if I can still ski! Spoiler alert: I can... kind of. #garmisch #ski #travel

    Due to motion sickness sensitivity, I couldn’t watch the hyper speed portions, but I enjoyed the rest. The path with the drop-off to the side where you said you liked the pace had me laughing a bit because I’ve been on some mountain roads in a pickup truck that just drop off to the side and have no guardrail. It can be freaky, but sometimes you just have to shut up and ride.

    These videos were so very helpful for me to get a sense of the complicated ski areas of garmisch. Thanks a lot for labelling the trails because that helped me see them on the map. I still have a couple of questions:
    1. I couldn't tell if you went up to Osterfelderkopf at 2057m? It seems connected to kreuzoch a 1719m which you went up via Kandahar lift. But i am not sure if one has to go all the way down to take Alpspitzebahn for Osterfelderkopf.
    2. Is it possible to go up to kreuzoch without taking the Kandahar lift? Or is there an all Easy way to get to the Kandhahar lift. I am assuming that's where you fell and i just wanted to avoid a fall 😅.
    3. Any idea about the difference between the snow card that you bought and a 2 day ski pass?
    4. How did you find zugspitze ski area compared to garmisch classic? More natural snow, less icy ?
    Sorry for so many questions. I am a little anxious about my upcoming trip and i fell a lot last time i skied the glacier in Austria mainly because the difficulty level wasn't marked accurately or their standards are very very different.

    • @VeryunOfficialTravelGuides
      @VeryunOfficialTravelGuides  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I can't promise you what the weather will be like or if you will fall or not ;-) But I can answer some of your questions.
      1. Osterfelderkopf is where I started my "skiing from the top to the bottom" adventure. Check out this video for what that was like: th-cam.com/video/EEWg3i8ywGE/w-d-xo.html
      2. I don't believe you can. I fell many times during those 3 days, but the one that is included in this video was down at the boarding area of Kandahar, yes.
      3. No, sorry. Not sure about that. But what I can tell you when you are looking at the passes is: it is not practical to ski up on the glacier AND down in the "Classic" area in one day. They are not connected and the actual time it takes to get from one to the other takes a big chunk out of the day.
      4. That really depends on the weather! If it's cold up there, it will be icy. If it's warm, it will not be icy. There is definitely a wider variety of easier runs down in the Classic area.
      I hope this helps!

    • @monalisahota
      @monalisahota 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides thank you! Well done skiing down all the way from osterfelderkopf in such low visibility. And a very bold decision to start your adventure there given that the trails were red in the beginning and you were skiing after a long break. I do the easy ones first to warm up. the one time I went up without warming up was in stubai glacier, and that did not go well at all!! I was exhausted and in in pain. So I would have to start at the blues/easy up the Hausbergbahn.
      It seems like if I go up the Hausbergbahn to warm up and want to go up the other peaks of classic area by skipping the Kandahar and any red trails, I'd need to take the Hausbergbahn down, board the train till the next station and then take kreuzekbahn or alpspitzebahn. Its hard to tell the direction of trails without any arrows (park city mountain had arrows ). So the mountain seems it is not connected from the top. Hmmmm seems odd to me though that they are not connected. I will find out when I get there and hopefully the weather is good for 2 out of 3 days 😉.
      The red doesn't look very challenging in your videos and I am tempted to start with the red (because I have already done intermediate runs this season so i am kind of ski ready) but it could be the camera angle or something. I will stick to easy because all mountains rate their slopes different. Thanks!!

    • @monalisahota
      @monalisahota 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wasn't going to ski both areas the same day. I am contemplating starting at the zugspitze, especially if it's sunny, because that also has lots of blues/easy trails. Should grab the opportunity to get the views if it comes down to it.

    • @monalisahota
      @monalisahota 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides came here to thank you for the detailed video about the 2 ski areas. There was still a lot of confusion about where exactly to take the train and where to rent skis etc. but your videos were very helpful in taking care of the rest of confusion. One of the things that was especially helpful was mentioning the Cable car going down to Austria. I would have definitely walked right into it had I not heard you say that. 😆
      I did ski both areas on the same day. I loved Zugspitze so much because of all natural snow that I went there again. But the second time was on a cloudy day which turned into a whiteout by 12.50 pm. Since it did not feel safe with zero visibility, I decided to ski the Classic for a couple of hours from about 1.50 pm. I took the first train of the day, and use the cable car to go up to maximize time.

  • @monalisahota
    @monalisahota 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    And about the cost of skiing in Colorado, well i think it is absolutely unaffordable for most people unless they have season passes. I checked early season and the tickets were going for about 500. It is insane there. Utah at under 300 usd seemed less expensive but they had only 25% trails open due to limited snowfall. Didn't feel worth the cost really. In the North East the tickets are under 200 usd for bigger resorts, although i doubt if any resort compares in size or height to the ones in Utah/Colorado.
    Europe that too these amazing glaciers and top of the line infrastructure seems like better experience overall, unless the cost of getting there is a factor.

    • @VeryunOfficialTravelGuides
      @VeryunOfficialTravelGuides  6 หลายเดือนก่อน
