  • Video Description
    The PSU Agricultural Fair is a major event in the Hat Yai calendar, but has sadly been cancelled for the last couple of years for reasons we will all be familiar with. Every year when it's on I try to visit at least once. I was very happy to see its return in 2022 and today I decided to go along with my wife. This is the 28th time the fair has been run. I can't remember the first time I went, but I think it was 2005.
    Most fairs in Hat Yai are basically the same with the same food vendors and very little else. They're actually quite boring. However, this one is very different. It's huge and extreme varied. You can buy a rotavator or a tractor if you are a farmer, a new electric vehicle, some clothes, or a new pet. In addition, there is a huge amount of food and drink on sale.
    This fair is very well known in Hat Yai and also many other southern Thai provinces. Consequently, it draws huge crowds and parking is a real nightmare. If you are in Hat Yai while the fair is taking place I strongly recommend visiting. It's fun to walk around, you can get some good food and, with vendors coming from all over Thailand to sell their goods, there are items on sale that normally you can't find in Hat Yai.
    The Prince of Songkla University and hospital is known locally as Mor Or, or PSU. Everyone knows it and it is very easy to get to. Today was the first day and this year the fair will run until 21 August.

    How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
    Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
    Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Use the following link to book your next hotel room!
    www.agoda.com/...
    Disclaimer. I am an Agoda affiliate and will receive a small commission for any completed bookings that are made through my links. However, I only promote goods and services that I am happy with and use myself.
    Are You Interested In Learning How To Read Basic Thai?
    Being able to read enough basic Thai so that you can negotiate menus and read signs is incredibly useful, and it's not that difficult. It's not like Japanese or Chinese, where you have to remember thousands of characters. Like English, it's just consonants and vowels. Yes, there are more characters than English, but phonetically Thai is a lot more consistent. English vowels and vowel combinations change sound in different words (cough, rough, through, thought, bough, etc). In many ways, Thais is actually easier to learn than English. If you are interested, try the tutorials on my other TH-cam channel. With some effort and dedication, you will be able to read quite well after around six months.

    Prince Of Songkla seems like village (Rural) University as compared to Chula, Mahidol or AIT

      Everything in provincial Thailand seems rural compared to Bangkok! Bangkok is a primate city, meaning it's far, far larger than the country's second biggest city. I read somewhere that Bangkok is 40 times larger than Thailand's second largest city. That's what I like about living in provincial Thailand. I can get most things I need, but there is some great countryside 15 minutes from where I live. Bangkok is an amazing, exciting place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there permanently. It's just too big, too busy, too congested, too urban, etc.

    Yrs ago i visited kanchanaburi and saw a sign (with english translation) inviting applications for various positions (salesperson, supervisor, etc.).. one of which was 'pretty'. I was amused, but assumed it was some sort of mistake (perhaps frm using a translator app). I stand corrected. Tks for the info.. gd to know! 👍

      No, it wasn't a mistake! The other good job description in Thailand is 'coyote'. I've seen signs looking to recruit 'coyotes'. I've got a friend who works in local government and a few years ago she set up a little side business arranging events. I saw the details for one event she managed and one line item was for sex 'pretties'. A 'pretty' is a real job description. There's a Thai TH-camr giving English lessons who I believe used to work as a 'pretty'.
      There was some controversy a few years ago when one 'pretty' had plastic surgery that went wrong (I think the doctor was unregistered as a plastic surgeon) and she died. The only thing that makes these girls employable is their looks. As they get older and their looks start to fade they go to extreme measures to try to retain their youth and the consequences can be severe.
      When I hear 'pretty' it always reminds me of the children-eating witch in Hansel and Gretel who refers to Gretel as 'my pretty'.

    Tq Phil for the video, without it we won't know Hatyai has such fair, I been to Hatyai for more than 20x never heard or seen ad promoting this fair. Is there any FB, etc., that promote events in Hatyai?..thanks..😊

      I'm really surprised. This is the biggest single annual event in Hat Yai. If there is a FB page it will probably be in Thai. I usually get wind of these things from advertising signs. When an event is coming up they post signs around town with details and dates. They're normally in Thai, but I can read Thai so it isn't a problem. When I was active on my website I had a 'Hat Yai Events' page and I would list the events that I saw being advertised on signs. However, as social media overtook websites and interest in my site declined I stopped updating it. With this particular event they don't need to advertise. Thais know about it and they arrive in huge numbers every year. We left at around 6pm on Friday and there were so many people arriving that it was difficult to get out.

    I must have just missed this, as I had to fly back to Australia on the 13th. I had a busy week setting up the condo. Shopping was easy in Hat Yai. The home pro was only about 1km down the road and the Central Festival only 2km. I found it very easy to get around using Grab. I was surprised by the amount of Thai's in Hat Yai that spoke good English. I even had my photo taken with staff at Tops. 🤣

      HomePro is my favourite store. I had a request to do a video there, but I would probably run into problems. I don't know, I may still do one. As in most places, there are a mixed variety of people. Some Thais do indeed speak good English. Some think they are good at English, but they're not, and some don't even bother to pretend. Where's the condo? D Condo is just behind HomePro and looks a decent place.

    Thanks for this video. My girlfriend and I will be visiting this fair next week before it ends. We also recently visited Larn Ta Chu based on your recommendation and it was very good. I'm pretty new to Hat Yai and have only been here once before and it has been difficult finding other foreigners to meet up and converse with. I'd be delighted to take you and your wife to lunch or dinner along with my girlfriend if you're ever up to it. All the best!

    Brother, my friend is taking part in the Songkla Run end of August. I may follow him. Is durian season in Hatyai end of August ?

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I've seen a few signs recently advertising the run. I'm not sure exactly when durian season is, but it doesn't seem to be now. How do I know? My wife and kids love it. Whenever durian is in season it is all around the house and I see it being sold on the street a lot. Just recently I don't recall seeing a lot of durian.

      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't sure, but I have to admit I haven't seen any Malaysians or Singaporeans there. Perhaps the Thais want to keep this one for themselves? It's a great fair. I may visit again before it finishes on the 21st.
      The kebab didn't work out well. It was really tasty, but ... on Friday evening my stomach started to churn. I was up all night and spent all of Saturday in bed with mild food poisoning. My wife got me some great medicine from a pharmacy that cleared up the problem quite quickly, but I wasted 24 hours.
      I'm not sure of the exact problem, but having seen so many examples of poor food hygiene in the last 19 years I have a few ideas.

      @@expatlivinginthailand definitely a thing here SEA where food preparation can be quite an issue. Maybe they wanna keep some agri secrets from Malaysian farmers hahhhhaha but thailand is definitely better in the agro sector than Malaysia. Rather amazed that the local govt is fully backing these continous events in hatyai, almost 2 mths of food fairs and events in the lee garden area, almost back to back.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidteoh7080 I haven't really been keeping tabs on local politics, but Sakhorn Thongmunee has replaced the long-standing Prai Pattano as HY mayor. It seems that he is doing everything he can to get tourists back by holding various events.
      In addition there are major projects underway to improve roads, resurface roads and bury overhead power cables. The economy is supposed to be really bad and these projects must be costing a fortune, but the money is coming from somewhere. I guess the Thais see these things as good long-term investments.
      BTW, PSU holds this particular fair every year. I believe it is self-funded and that it makes a profit. Many years ago I spoke to a restaurant owner who used to rent a stall at the agricultural fair every year. It was expensive, but she still made a profit because so many people attend. With such huge crowds I think everyone makes a profit.

    I wonder if there is a Muslim university in Thailand or a Muslim friendly university

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never heard of a university exclusively for Muslims, but all educational establishments in Thailand are Muslim friendly. I worked at the Hat Yai campus of PSU and there were lots of Muslims. There's also a campus in Pattani and I expect the ratio there is even higher.

    HELLO Phil , I think the annual agriculture fair in Hatyai is by all means for people like you who own a private property with landscape in fact it;s not as boring as it seems the only things that could make the fair more interesting is to have a musical stage where you have live rock bands along with some local singers anyway as a tourist I would not mind paying a visit tunning back on your previous the 2 videos that you had a conversation with the friendly thai massage girls outside the shop has attracted me as I find it funny and meaningful but i still can't figure out the reply to the Mymnnar girl like "Tham Rot? and she got excited may I ask what is the meaning as I beginning to learn more Thai language had no problems with the basics. thank you for sharing.👌

      Hi Francis. Yesterday we left around 6pm because huge crowds were arriving. I went later in the evening years ago when I was single and I can remember some music.
      I had to think hard to remember that conversation. I asked the girl where she was from and she told me Burma. She then said she didn't have a passport so I joked about calling the police - ตำรวจ. The girls like to joke around, but if there is no common language you can't. A lot of the girls can speak Chinese because they deal with so many Chinese customer, but not many can speak English.
