I agree. That's exactly what I was thinking. I love how many paintings kept their most characteristic features, but just looked like filtered images.
They do look alike for the most part. Some looked better in the photo than they did in the painting.

Many painted pictures are quite consistent with the real faces of these people; you also need to take into account the age at which the person is depicted and his attitude towards the photograph; the time interval can be a significant amount of time.

I was surprised to realize how strong the resemblance was between Mary of Teck, Elizabeth Bowles-Lyon, and Queen Elizabeth. It's striking, IMO.
The Hawaiian princess looked far better in her portrait than her painting.

На фотографиях мы видим их уже солидными дамами, побитыми жизнью, с приглушенным блеском глаз и с набором появляющихся морщинок. Да, время неумолимо, но все похожи!❤
Наша Александра Фёдоровна была очень красивая женщина! Посмотрите и на портрет художника и на фото, она прекрасна везде. Остальные принцессы в действительности были страшные, как бы их художники не старались приукрасить.

The Van Gogh comparison was not accurate. The photo was taken when he was young. The painting is when he was much older.
That's not Vincent van Gogh . That is brother Theodorus van Gogh
Many of these after pictures they're much older.
Also, colour portraits but black and white photographs. Hardly a fair comparison.

Concordo, c'è sicuramente un momento in cui e stato fatto il quadro e un momento in cui sono state fatte le fotografie ma non escludo che il pittore abbia potuto/dovuto apporre delle "migliorie" per rispetto al casato e al titolo della dama.

How many years difference between the paintings and the photographs?
It’s going to be highly variable. Some of them look like they’re fairly contemporaneous, while others there’s clearly a large age difference. In very old photographs, they probably didn’t have a lot of choice as to selection. It might have been helpful if the respective dates of the photographs and paintings were shown, rather than just and age range for the sitter.

I can so relate to the last woman; try to look natural and "pretty" when blinded by scorching light!
And probably for longer time than todays photos.
I keep thinking that some good make-up could make most faces as beautiful as in paintings. Blush and highlighter in the right places could even alter the shape we see. And color photos 😁
