How To Spice Up Your Piano With 2-5-1 Passing Chords

  • The video is an instructional piano lesson on Introduction to 2-5-1 Passing Chords.
    The instructor, Warren, discusses the concept of 2-5-1 passing chords in both major and minor keys.
    He explains that in a 2-5-1 progression, the 2 chord is typically diminished in a minor key and a straight minor chord in a major key, the 5 chord is a dominant 7th chord, and the 1 chord is a resolution chord (major in major keys and minor in minor keys).
    Warren demonstrates the use of 2-5-1 progressions in different musical contexts, such as harmonizing melodies, transitioning from a 1 to a 4 chord, and transitioning from a 1 to a 6 chord.
    He emphasizes the importance of understanding the destination chord when using 2-5-1 progressions.

    Just, WOW. In all my wanderings through piano instruction land I have NEVER encountered even a hint of that insight - using the 2-5-1 sequence as a harmonization sequence to the destination chord. Absolutely brilliant!

    • @jamesgregoric5786
      @jamesgregoric5786 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What I mean is, I never thought of 2-5-1 as anything other than a cadence sequence. Using it in passing *really* increases its usefulness for improv.

      Piano Lesson with Warren
      Warren you said that most of the times 2 is diminished in passing chords, can this also be a minor?

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leandro Sardinha 2 is diminished in minor key ONLY, its important you remember that. So when you're doing a 2-5 passing and the destination is minor, the 2 should be diminished. If the designation choir is major, then the 2 should be minor.
      Now, what I explained above is the standard practice, but remember there's no absolute rule in music. For advance players, your 2 can be what ever you want it to be... major minor diminished or augmented. But it require a deep understanding of what's happening before you start changing stuff.
