      @@johns7530the thing about playing a GM is if you try to play slow and defensively, they're going to win. If you play aggressively and make them defend.. you're probably still going to lose, but you at least have a chance of inducing some blunder massive enough to take advantage of!

    I once read in a chess book "If you want to see wonderous combinations, you'll probably be disappointed studying the world's best as they generally see such combinations beforehand and do all to prevent them from happening. No, if you want to see great combinations - the most exciting ones, you often need to watch lower level players." I'm sure that's not entirely true but the sentiment stuck with me.

    • @8964TS
      @8964TS ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It rings true. Chess puzzles rated 1500 are some of the most fun because they’re combos that only come up in 1500 games.

      but the best defensive games are fought by the best players, I enjoy those just as much as attacking ones, although im with the minority who likes it that way..

      @@ghostgurl17 You are right- you can always show what "wonderous combinations" would have occured had the player not defended properly as part of the post analysis.

    • @anandbenegal
      @anandbenegal ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily true. It depends on style and style clashes. For instance, Dubov, Rapport, (among players of ages past) Tal, Polgar all attempt(ed) to create or force positions where a lot of tactics take place. But it's not *always* possible to force that style of play against a solid and risk-averse opponent.

    Magnus's opponent from Georgia is strong, and streaky. I've seen him beat much stronger players but today was not his day. What's impressive about 2700+ players is how consistently strong they are, they don't have "off days".

    • @yudistiraliem135
      @yudistiraliem135 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably depending on what lines the opponent plays or what pattern there’s on the board. Reminded me of the story of Annuseirawan when he specializing in side pawn opening for a short while and he destroyed other GM’s with ease. Then a person manage to draw him quite decisively and afterward everone seemed able to do so without much problem.

  • @stuartberg8030
    @stuartberg8030 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's worth noting that in the second blocking scenario you mentioned (9:16), after Qa8+ Black also has the option of blocking with the night on d8, rather than the rook. White still achieves checkmate by *sacrificing the queen* and recapturing with the rook. In this line, White's knight on f5 is crucial -- it covers e7. In all other lines you showed, that knight wasn't necessary to the checkmate. But this line demonstrates that without that knight, the rook sacrifice wouldn't succeed! In other words, this mate involved EVERY PIECE of White's (other than the king).
    [Edit: Okay, at least two other commenters noticed this line, too. But I think I'm the first make the point about the knight on f5.]
    1. Re8 Kxe8

  • @LtKregorov

    What is even better is that in the knight block variation, you can take the rook with your queen, sacrifying it, and you still win by recapturing with your rook. A rook and queen sacrifice for a forced mate, what a beauty.

    At 8:07 I actually found Queen takes B5 sacrificing his queen after Black takes with Knight. White then uses D1 Rook to take D7 Rook... Nothing Black can do after that. Magnus is a genius, but people must be getting tired of playing him now. I mean, draw him in a tournament & you might as well book your flight home. Its getting boring.

      Yeah altho Hikaru has been going toe to toe with him lately so that is a genuinely exciting match up especially because so often faster time controls these days
