Chetan Bhagat-Love Jihad an Urban Myth, I Don't Support Use of Term; Hard Right is Hurting India

  • In a wide ranging and at times rambling 55-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire Chetan Bhagat said the hard right - which he said is different from the hindu right - threatens India’s interests. This is because they want things “that (will) truly harm India’s growth prospects”. He said: ““They are noisy and unruly. They want permanent conflict, frequent bashing of muslims and frankly things that truly harm India’s growth prospects.”
    Chetan Bhagat told The Wire that becoming a Hindu Rashtra will not give India a glorious future. He said attempts to create one “will destroy investment, business sentiment and harmony”. More importantly, he added, “a prosperous Hindu Rashtra is an impossibility”. The Hindu Rashtra concept harkens back to an alleged golden age and turns it back on science, modern thinking and economic development.

With some of his points, I agrees like intellectuals/ liberals it seem don't convey their ideas to common people for example The Hindu, such a good newspaper, is read by so few atleast in North India, and common person reads dainik jagran/bhaskar etc etc and these papers write shit so he was right in pointing out that there is gap between liberals and common people atleast in terms of language. He wasn't given any chance to speak. Most of these issues are nuanced and you need to have empathy for all sides to understand issues. Most liberals lack the intellectual capacity to understand nuances and empathy to tolerate different viewpoints.

    • @RahulChoudhary-hb7nv
      @RahulChoudhary-hb7nv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I consider myself a liberal. But most of the rather uneducated liberals don't yet have developed the intellectual capacity to understand nuances.
      For example, take love jihad. While the whole conspiracy theory is stupid and easy to debunk but some of underlying issues are genuine. Its blown out of proportion of course, but there are some genuine concerns. For example, the whole Muslims can't marry non-Muslims thing, is very much part of Muslim scriptures. More importantly, its part of Muslim culture, they are not ready to accept a Hindu women into their family unless she converts. Most inter faith couples don't care so deeply about religion. Even when they do, they are respectful of each other's religious choices. Conversion happens solely to gain acceptance in the family. That's the issue liberals should focus on. Why should a woman convert to gain acceptance while a man is not required to. Also, Muslim personal laws are still quite regressive and contradict values of Indian constitution but liberals never take up those issues. You can't call yourself a liberal while ignoring gender biases in minority communities. Hindu personal laws were ammended in 1954 and lives of Hindu women have somewhat improved over the past 65 years while Muslim personal laws were never touched.

      @@shashankmijar2694 Shashanka ji, perhaps the prejudices are on the side of the right hard or soft? EVERY right without exception? Maybe "when we set aside ego, self interest, jealousy, insecurity etc. and are our true spiritual selves, away from the turbulence of self, we may log on to the meaning of things and see the world as it ought to be seen?" Of course, we don't expect the uneducated, the unexposed and those struggling merely to keep body and soul together, but Mr Bhagat? And other such privileged people? In an ideal world, the governors of the nation would be responsible for bringing about this vision, they have the power. For that, justice is a prerequisite which, unfortunately, we don't see.

      @@nasreenrehman2001 as bagat said liberals are talking as if inhumane activities happening after 2014.. they dont utter a single word about what happened before 2014... They always target Modi since 2002.. this doesn't take them anywhere... When bagat said about muslim family forcing their doughter in law to convert forcefully Tapar interrupted him.. this is where liberals dont want to listen anything.. the reality is the former... Until or unless one dosnt accept the truth one cant bring the change.. and u cant beat BJP.. cuz they speak the truth , it may sound harsh for liberals but thats the ground reality that they r not ready to accept.

      @@shashankmijar2694 it's not some deep insight, we all know what the hard right wing points are and Bhagat himself disagrees with those. He even blurted out that we are 'appeasing' them.
      The problem is that somewhat sane people feel more comfortable associating themselves with right wing rather than liberals.
      There is no doubt in my mind the hard right equally despises someone like Bhagat or sensible Hindus as much as the liberals do, maybe more.
      At some point the sensible people have to ditch both extremes and go for the centrist party.
      Unfortunately that party is congress and there in lies the rub.... Lefties think congress is BJP lite and righties think congress is Stalin. But congress is neither, it's a boring old centrist party that kept extreme elements in check.

    Been in North America for forty years, I learned what is important for the country, while listening,, still people in India, thinking on the right direction, like Mr. Bhagat, India should not compare herself with Pakistan, which is a failed nation and country, no vision and directions,. Just to stay in power Modi and his colleagues had done enough damage to India- Mr. Baghat rightly said focus on economy and not on Muslims.
