Jim came up with this song while he was in the Army reserves boot camp and saw young guys placing phone calls home, only to find out that their girlfriends or wives were now seeing someone else. Often someone they knew. So in a way it's dedicated to all the Dear John's

Got a Dear John while in Boot Camp myself. She ended up dating one of my best friends as well. Made my way back home to stay after four years. Re-kindled
my relationship with my best friend. Never saw nor did I call the girl. I guess my relationship with my friend was more important.

TAD to Japan, Saturday in line at the MARS(Military Auxiliary Radio System) I was calling home, they were calling their GF or wife but getting Dear John. One of the many favorites from Mr. Croce.

Ingrid Croce opened a restaurant and bar of her own in 1985 called Croce's that served to honor Jim's memory.
In 2000, the Martin guitar company produced 73 guitars in honor of Jim Croce. In each of these guitars, an uncirculated 1973 dime was inserted in the third fret fingerboard in honor of this song and the final line, "You can keep the dime." Peace out.

Jim Croce’s story is firstly incredibly too short, and lastly incredibly sad. He & his wife were first a folk duo when he struck as a solo artist. He was really only in mainstream view for about 3.5 years. Missing his wife & baby boy intensely, he wrote her saying when the current tour was done, he was coming home to stay. He would focus on her, AJ, & songwriting. He died in a plane crash before he could do so; his wife received the letter a week after he passed.
It’s amazing what he left us in those 3.5 years. He had such a unique sound & his classical guitar skills were beyond compare. AJ, even after suffering his own tragedy in childhood, is an artist himself.
Time In A Bottle, The King’s Song, Hard Way Every Time, Lover’s Cross (think you would LOVE this), Have To Say I Love You… so so many. Again, it’s amazing what he left us in too lil time.
    Always enjoyable; Thank You.
    Stay safe & love much💖

Oh man, take me back! I was in the 9th grade and was dating a guy who played guitar. He really liked Jim Croce, and he would bring his guitar to my aunt's home, and he would sit on the floor and sing to me. When he sang Croce, he sounded just like him! He was crazy good, and yeah, he made me swoon. I remember thinking how sad this song was, how the levels of wanting to hear her voice, wanting to tell the both of them that he's doing fine, and then "Operator, let's forget about this call. There's no one there I really wanted to talk to." Jim painted pictures with his songs, and I died a little when he died.
On the other hand, "Time in a Bottle" is beautiful, such a lovely song to sing to the one you love. Please react to this!
"Operator" was released in the early 70s. A lot of people played "If Loving You is Wrong, I Don't Want to be Right," "Afternoon Delight," that stupid "Piña Colada Song," and many others really did underline the free love attitude of the times. Looking back, I feel the magical, musical time it was. I hope I always will.

In the 70s we mainly listened to the radio, songs had to grab your imagination or reach your heart to be memorable and then we bought the records. This is why there are so many iconic singers and songs from 70s and early 80s. Once video hit we could watch TV but we still heard songs first on the radio. Check out Queen' Radio Ga Ga song which is about how important it was to people ❤

His songs have been a large part of my life. The days of talking to the operator on a pay phone for a dime. He was supposed to be the opener for the Carpenters when I was 12 in 1972 but he got laryngitis and couldn't play. He died shortly after. He was a wonderful singer and songwriter. Time in a Bottle is a beautiful song that he wrote for his baby son but came out after he died in a plane crash.

  • @stevefoulston

The song was about his time in National Guard training he was standing there in the rain at a payphone. And he was listening to these stories of all these guys, the 'Dear John' stories, that were standing in line waiting their turn in the rain with these green rain jackets over their heads - I can just picture it, all of them in line waiting for their 3-minute phone call. Most of them were getting on the phone and they were okay, but some of them were getting these 'Dear John' letters, or phone calls. I think that was the most important aspect of the song, because it was just so desperate. You know, 'I only have a dime' and 'You can keep the dime' because money was very scarce and very precious, and I think if you look at the words to the song there are so many aspects of our generation that are in it. Ingrid Croce, who was married to Jim from 1966 until his death in 1973 said I'm picturing Jim out in the rain and this long line of guys where they're really trying to reach somebody. It was hard to get through, so you always had the operator do it for you." Peace out.

The song speaks of indescribable pain from betrayal, shattered hopes and dreams, and the loss of the love that had been a driving force in his life.
Ernest Hemingway once wrote an entire heart-rending novel in six words: "For sale, baby shoes, never worn". The story is not in what was said, it is in what wasn't said. This song is like that, and many people can identify with it in their own way. I certainly can.

Other Jim Croce songs that you should listen to? 🤔
*ALL* of them. - No joke. 😶
However, I would personally suggest: Lover's Cross, One Less Set of Footsteps, Roller Derby Queen, Rapid Roy, Workin' at the Carwash Blues, Walkin' Back to Georgia, and ... by then, you should be hooked. 😉
    P.S.
The commercial hit of the period was Leroy Brown, but the musically better song (and type of story) was You Don't Mess Around With Jim.

I believe it's pronounced like crow-chee.. He has a lot of upbeat songs.. but this and time in a bottle get to me. To me it's more like, he's regaining his life and nostalgic, he was betrayed by his girl and his best friend, yet he misses them both.. he doesn't want her back or even the relationships of both fully back, he just wants some sort of closure in it all to say he's no longer angry even if it does still weigh on his mind.

This happened to my brother. His wife ran off with his best friend to California. It was a very real trauma for my brother. She took their kids with her.

One of the great storytellers of the 70s. Sadly it gained popularity shortly after his death at only 30 years old.

Try “Rapid Roy”, “Big bad Leroy Brown”, or “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim”

Aside from the beautiful lyrics and story, the guitar work is fantastic. Maury Muehleisen, who backs Croce here, plays some incredible fills. He died with Croce in that awful crash. Croce was 30. Muehleisen was 24.

I personally love “I have to say I love you in a song” by Jim. But if you’ve never heard of Avenue Q- you must check out “Mix Tape”
