At the time, I met Rory after a gig. What struck me was he was not just an incredible live performer, in person, he was humble and unassuming. For a time I was alone with him, and I remember that he was a perfect gentleman too.
In his lifetime, Rory was a significant star, and today decades after his passing he still is. Respected by all his contemporaries. The difference is he did not sell out to commercialism. He refused to release singles. He was an album/ live musician. Many from his generation were... For example, Nick Drake and John Martyn never released singles either,
Rory stood out from his peers, he was voted the best guitarist in the world! In ( Golden Standard) The Melody Marker Magazine, ahead of all his contemporaries in 1972.
He recorded with Muddy Waters, Gerry Lee Lewis, Albert King, etc. In his lifetime, with no radio play, off his own back, he sold over 30 million albums! He could have sold four times that amount during his concerts, in truth, no one knows how many albums were sold? because there was no central location... So with that in mind, before his health problems, Rory lived a full, happy, and successful life.

Awesome, thanks for sharing this, I've not seen any of this footage before, precious. I loved Rory and his music, saw him 'live' 3 times and have since visited Cork and the 'Taste' cafe, so much great memorabilia to see there. Blueprint was the first album of his that I connected with and then I discovered Irish Tour '74, Wow! I worked my way through all of his music over the years that followed and just had to see him perform. His gigs always had a brilliant boozy warm vibe and the stage was where Rory always gave his best in my opinion. Great memories of a loveable person and a brilliant blues guitarist. RIP Rory, your musical legacy lives on.

@@JimiHendrixEX Heck, I learned how to play, and a huge amount about history, listening to Fahey in the 60’s. The man was a legend. A musicologist and entrepreneur as well as a musical pioneer. You might also check out Fahey’s buddies, Leo Kottke, Dr. John, Canned Heat, and Dave Snaker Ray. While you’re at it, Bert Jansch and Sandy Bull. And on electric? John McLaughlin. His first Mahavishnu Orchestra records changed music forever. He combined post-Coltrane jazz, flamenco, Indian raga, and modern classical - Bartok, Satie, etc. - into a world music encyclopedia.
      Happy travels!

I think what I like about Rory was his eternal, youthful enthusiasm for his craft. He wasn’t a Rock diva either but rather preferred the closeness he got with his audiences in the smaller venues.Jimi Hendrix in a BBC interview, when ask what it was like to be considered one of the best guitarists in the World ?Jimi simply replied,”That he didn’t know but you might want to ask Rory Gallagher.”A truly nice compliment from another contemporary of those early days.Ironically Jimi would be soon to leave early in life as would Rory. Both were great musicians but I do think Rory was the better despite not getting as much acclaim.

Rory was just do real and down to earth and was so passionate about the roots music he loved. He could have easily done some pop song and made a hit or 10 but he wanted nothing to do with mainstream fads in music. He had far too much integrity for that.
