What a sportsman Bengston was. He overruled the umpire and gave Tibor the point at about 21.5. Wet ball serve was the issue. Never seen that done in modern times.
as sports gets bigger with more sponsors and more money so does the egoism. But tt i still quite sport. Most players raise hand when getting an egde or or a net roll
+M Latour lol, he got that point not Klampar, that gesture was actually rude, not fair play. Obviously the empire decides who has the point not the players. The ball was wet and Klampar complained for it (probably he was right, he showed the ball's trace on his racket) but Bengston shouldn't behave so rude bec of it.
I am sure it was not intended as being rude, Stellan is a very nice person as well as sportsman. I know Grubba liked him (as well as the other Swedish players of the time) because they never "stole" a point from him while playing.
@@jamessoo4486Did Ma Long develop any original technique like Waldner did(shakehand serve grip)? Didn't he have to wait for Wang Hao to retire to start his reign at the age of 27yo?Goat of the weak era.
klampar was leading 19-16 when he missed a wet ball & he showed to bengtson the wet spot on his racket. bengtson didn't like it & grudgingly changed the scoreboard & gave the point back to klampar. the home audiance saw the obvious dislike in his action & responded. the czhech empire however ruled in bengtson's favor whom it seems may've purposely gave back the next point to klampar according to the commentator. i don't see it that way & i've looked at it more than once. anyway there was no bad blood between them after the match, cuz they've respected each other. their rivalry goes back since they've competed as juniors. klampar said in his book review recently he didn't take the game as seriously as he should've & he would've had more world titles to show for. klampar was the best in europe in 81 & had a winning record over bengtson that year. he even got a kiss from bengtson after he won the world cup. th-cam.com/video/5V8wR0JCFgY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Ikaruspingpong th-cam.com/video/J6UrAroBHsM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=tollean
The thing is, that if it was a wet spot - or ball - THE BALL WOULD NOT GRAB THE SPIN, and go down hitting the net. Klampar is slicing the ball a bit. It would have gone UPWARDS, if wet. Physics.

You can see it often even now in table tennis. Fairness still takes part in that sport.

One year later J-O arrived, GOAT. Still you can see that Stellan was an inspiration for him
This is much rather an inspiration to Erik Lindh, the coming swedish bounce player. Angles and a persistent urge for an early kill.
Sorry, you are wrong. J-O is not the GOAT. China Ma Long is the real GOAT, undisputed GOAT

I love Klamath and his speed glue
Klampar was ridiculously talented but he sometimes had a tendency to mentally switch off. A bit more dedication and he could've won everything..
Bengtson almost pulled off his favorite end-game saver: repeated serve and quick-smash. So close.
I remember those days. I haven't seen any video of the 1971 world championship tournament, where Stellan wins.
