Union Pacific coal train with hotbox and smoking brakes

  • Hot box is at 3:16 with the first truck. A long Union Pacific coal train comes down the steep grade of the Moffat route at Tunnel 29 in the Colorado Rockies. The train is braking hard with smoking brake shoes. Todays catch of a hot box on fire is extremely rare on any railroad. This is one of the last all steel coal trains. This was filmed in January, 2011.

    Kinda scary that. Congrats. This is the first train video where I have actually felt concern. So much potential. So much weight.

      I liked the optical illusions that my eyes were creating with the walls above the tunnel after the train had left.

    Holy Beautiful Shot, I love the tunnel. Also the engine approaching sounded like its air release was a rap if you listen just right.

      Yes this is a good location. That tunnel is very short I think only about 20 feet.

    I counted three or four cars with stuck brakes, the last one was sparking.

    The train seems to be passing by with the brakes on, but it is keeping it's speed. Is that some technical malfunction, or does it take even longer to come to a full stop?

      No it is just a heavy train going down the mountain. The train keeps a constant speed of around 15-20 MPH going down the grade. The grade is around 30 miles all downhill to Denver. Smoking brakes are not uncommon on this train but this train looks much longer than normal. Here is some other videos of the same train but on different days and locations

      Before going down the grades the locomotive should have the dynamic breaks on you can hear it on the first part of the video and from 2:08 to 2:12 also with air brakes on each wagons.

    Didn't see any hot box's just a few warm brakes.
