This was quite the find late one night on ebay! thought it would be criminal to not do a vid on it :D. as it is surprisingly similar to the announcer 9a backing track available here :- www.patreon.com/posts/megamix-8-pt1-59898141
Is difficult to capture feelings and a lot of people with more resources and money usually fail, but you managed to really capture the feel of an era, congratulations.
Your “bad” singing still sounds way better than my good singing, so I wouldn’t feel embarrassed about it. It may just be “silly” singing, but it sure isn’t Bad singing! Keep having fun, and thanks for sharing your shenanigans with us!!!
Nice idea! I wonder about hacking a pair of VoIP to old pulse-dialed PSTN interfaces (multi-channel would be better), installing one on the Not-Obsolete-Museum end, and the other on the Connections Museum end in Atlanta.
Sam, have you been to the Milton Keynes museum (yes, really)? They've got a big strowger switchboard display which is fully interactive, with multiple phones across the museum to call on, including an manual switchboard to use. Granted, you have your own to play with, but still....it's very cool.
When I was 7, in the early '70s, I needed to call a posh classmate of mine (I lived in the poor part of town, but that school was full, so I walked to a posh school). The phone answered and I heard "Hello, this is the answering machine of the Willynilly's. Nobody can answer the phone right now, please leave a message after the beep!" I'd never ever heard of answering machines, so panicked and hung up, and for YEARS wondered how the hell you could make a machine that could TALK! And not only that, but also TAKE MESSAGES!? I mean HOW!?! 3 years later, I was at another classmate's home, saw a strange machine with two cassette tapes, and asked what it was, and the penny dropped. I was both relieved, disappointed, and felt stupid, all at once.
@@eDoc2020 your quite right, The colouration difference wasnt nearly as noticeable in person, I guess bright studio lights make it stand out. well spotted.
Indeed! However if you see my stuff, I personally like discolouration and I’m not from the school of thought that machines should be cleaned and returned to their original state. I don’t retrobrite or anything as I much prefer them showing signs of the lives they have had 👍👍👍👍
I stumbled on your channel cuz of that Techmoan machine, and TH-cam going 'So... here:'. And Im glad I did. I wish I was local to you. would love to see all those old fone interchanges running. Im old enough to remember using rotary dial fones, etc. And always found it fascinating how they worked. Imma call you Phone Pimp from now on.
I enjoy this content, it's entertaining. I wonder if, any one has ever done something similar, with a Magnavox odyssey. The one that would work best, would be the one from 1970. It has alot of knobs and a selection of additional accessories, like button controls and a big knobby keyboard. I believe eBay, has atleast one or two left. Also goodwill, often has a bunch sitting around.
Once you get outside calls working, maybe consider setting up a livestream on the actual switchboxes (im not sure what theyre called). It be interesting to watch them go round and round
Is the message in the voice of Alistar Sim ? Fingerless gloves for the garage, i must get some.Fantastic teardown, love to see the mechanical solutions to problems now done digitally. nice work.
You should try to get a bunch of the same heads and build a DIY Mellotron (sampler). : ) 4:14 that's how i used to build mix tapes as kid on a double deck cassette player aka gettoblaster, cut and pasta cassette tape. Like the dutch Master mixer "Ben Liebrand" back in the time and is still doing it.
Hope you are feeling better, you look like you are back to normal. I'll visit the museum when it reopens, I've got some military\aviation electronics for you
you could've just scraped some oxide off to make the tape see-through. I did this once when my part for a musical performance was on a revox on stage while I sat in the audience, & wanted it to stop on its own. 🙂
Wow. If you can get that remote calling thing sorted out, I might finally have a use for that unlimited international calling on my phone plan. Much cheaper than a plane ticket to the UK and all the faffing about with quarantine and passports and visas that entails.
Wonderful. Can you upload the sample of your poo adjacent answering machine message too? I may have sprayed chocolate milk out of my nose after hearing it.
I can't wait to call that number and as I have said before I hope you set the number up "premium rate" so we can so we can donate a few pence to the museum by calling, mind you Don't do it like that do it like this ! LOL

singing was good buddy : )
Dont do it loik that, do it loik this!
“Don’t do it like that, you gotta do it like this “ deserves a full length version
Sometimes we get a hint of songs he's working on so I'm hoping, haha.
Bit like Bernard Cribbins - Hole In The Ground that, just 'Hole In The Tape' this time ha
Maybe little bit similar to this Roni Size - Who Told You th-cam.com/video/UydJUuST4yw/w-d-xo.html
YES!
Is difficult to capture feelings and a lot of people with more resources and money usually fail, but you managed to really capture the feel of an era, congratulations.
Living outside the UK, I hope we'll be able to call those phones via VOIP or something. I really want to visit the museum one day!
That will be DOPE!
Plans are afoot for this to be possible soon
Saaaame!
i like how desperate the sound in the recording. "would you PLEASE call an alternate number"
Can't get enough of that exchange switching away. Nice job Sam and what a bargain.👍
hey good to know!!! i have kept the videos a bit sparse as im aware not everyone likes this diversion!!! :D but glad you like em!
The input jack on the phone is so cool. My wife asked me to stop adding toggle switches to our household items. So I really enjoy seeing this.
Can we have a full version of the "Wellcome to the museum" song? It's bloody awesome!
Just came here to ask for a full version as well. 😀
Your “bad” singing still sounds way better than my good singing, so I wouldn’t feel embarrassed about it. It may just be “silly” singing, but it sure isn’t Bad singing!
Keep having fun, and thanks for sharing your shenanigans with us!!!
haha cheers. it was a cheesy eve :D
Thank you, I shall now have "Welcome to the Museum" stuck in my head on loop for the rest of the day.
Haha that’s the goal!
Yay Techmoan! I'm so glad y'all have collaborated!!
Listening to jingle 1st time on that phone call and hear: "Welcome to New Zealand".
Just love the simpler times with complex machine electronics
*You don't do it like that!*
_You've gotta do it like THIS_
I thought you said it would be a cheesy jingle?! Total masterpiece! 😊
We need a longer version of the Internet Flame War song - "you don't do it like thaaaat, you gotta do it like thiiiiis"
OK, I think this just became my new favorite channel. I'm shocked TH-cam hasn't recommended this to me before now. Great stuff!
Awesome visiting you Saturday museum is just incredible and my daughter hasn't stopped talking about it and her new furby friend!
:D
what an amazingly esoteric gizmo, I want one, and such a great breakdown of how it works too. TY
Can't wait to bust my phone bill calling to the museum, only to listen to that beautiful jingle, looovely!
hahaha its gunna be cool!!!
That jingle is not going to leave my head for some time 😁

There needs to be an extended version of '(Welcome To) The Museum!' 😂🤣.
Fantastic, and what an absolute bargain. You've so got to sample the original tape.
4:40 I think you and I have a slightly different definition of “funny” lmao
Nice strauger switch exchange at the end of the video. I enjoyed watching thanks for sharing.
4:05 How(Not)To 🤭 _🎵 Don't do it like thaaaat!_
dont do it like that!!!!!
Your videos never cease to put a smile on my face. I don't live in Europe, so I guess watching this stuff on TH-cam will have to do.
Thank you so much for all the stuff you upload and do.

@@annother3350 yup 😋
@@RegebroRepairs Be careful what you wish for. Robonanny wont take no s**t!!
the jingle is a piece of genius!
"This is Pannal 672, Pannal Electrical and Domestic Repair" - Pannal is 5 mins from where I live :D Unless there's another 'Pannal'... LOVE this!!
The shell looks like it could use a round of Retrobrighting, as The 8-Bit Guy calls it. Otherwise, wow, looks brand-new!
The shell is meant to be that colour

This museum-thing you talk about, I might have a visit at one point, it's looking like a fun thing to do! Do keep fire extinguishers around... :)
I loved that moustached singer at 7min 11sec 😂👍
The original message was awesome I think my new outgoing message will ask people to call an alternative number.
Love it! It's going to start getting hard to maintain everything in the museum lol
Yep! Damn nabbit

Ah nice, all this tape stuff is the best
the jingle is awesome! and the singing is pretty good, actually!
It's so cool how you manage to gather all this vintage tech and find ways to put it to use! How has the museum been doing so far?
Hope you are feeling better, you look like you are back to normal. I'll visit the museum when it reopens, I've got some military\aviation electronics for you
The museum jingle needs a full version and a cheesy neon vibe 80s videoclip
wow, what an old machine, how much technology has improved, thank you for this video, i did not know your house is a museum which people can visit
Love the 'Joe 90 title sequence' aesthetic of that tape loop.
Welcome to the museuuuuuuuuum OOOOH YEEEAAAAHHHH
Was really cool to see the tape loop get made :D
you could've just scraped some oxide off to make the tape see-through. I did this once when my part for a musical performance was on a revox on stage while I sat in the audience, & wanted it to stop on its own. 🙂
Quite novel how they used a small hole in the tape to trigger a light sensor.

I kept thinking "Pink Floyd (Money)" intro when all the switches were running.
That actually looks like cheese.
Gouda day sir ; )
nice slabba cheddar!
please make the "dont do it like that" music royalty free so we can all use it on our own stuff 😂
4:40 imagine dialling an old number and you just hear this at the other end
It could be fun if you called your museum stuff, and at the same time observe the device on webcam!
4:41 Trying to summun Cthulhu, are we
best answering machine i have ever seen. when will these be going to market good sir?
0:20 Did you really just do a Techmoan impression, I'm cracking up.
The voice message on that machine sounds like AtomicShrimp when he does those Slaughter Village shorts.
Where can I find an update on your Googol Counter? Would love to see where it's at since a year has gone by!
get Limmy to record an "adventure call" message, you'll make pounds!
4.07-4.21....masterpiece🥇🏆.....thats got to be a sample drop somewhere...somehow 😂
Nice one dude what a lovely gadget 👍
it would be cool to find the man in the recording
Most certainly. I did do a bit of digging but no luck
"Hey, yeah, I want to order take-out, yeah? What's your expected delivery time, to New York? I'll pay a 15% tip to the driver."
It's been amazing. Once again!
welcome to the museum, pull up in the pick up truck of love... welcome to the museum, i promise its not duff.....
I hope the original message maker hears it. Nice to keep it stored away.
4:07 you're sounding an awful lot like Dankpods, coincidence?!
welcome to the museuuuUUUUUUUUUMM
that is the perfect ringtone
Apparently this thing knows more than you think it does..... It knows more than I thought it did. LoL 😉😁😆
To be able to dial in... Could you do a PBX that you host locally and then output have that output to a POTS card? Im still learning that stuff myself
We have it all in the works
04:07 coffee on screen moment of the day --- record that track or I will sample u!
Legendary Jingle !!!
Wonderful. Can you upload the sample of your poo adjacent answering machine message too? I may have sprayed chocolate milk out of my nose after hearing it.
What about a tape loop of Cisco's "Opus No. 1" hold music for this? Or a cover of it!
That chicken head looks so pretty on this.
You're doing God's work here.
I think you would be a code breaker during the war dude.
Proud of you
That message felt like Mr Weebl!
I keep hearing "BLUUUUUUUE WHALE!"
When is your hit new single ( Dont do it like dat do it like dis ) goin to drop?
I love this so much lolololol.
I wanna sample all of ittttt
Especially hilarious in this one wow lmao 😂

Hey cheers! And yeah hopefully will be premium! It won’t be extortionate though :D
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was Techmoan at first lol
Sam, you're a madlad!
🤣🤣👍👍

I would pay for a custom version of the "having a poo" message with my own phone number to use for my personal voice mail.
Haha 😂
imazing
Awesome machine, and another awesome thing is it's now at 420 likes
your jingle sounds like something that the guys from south park would do
Brilliant! :-D
Is the switch necessary? The socket has a built in bypass for when nothing is plugged in... Or at least it could.
Because both sides of the microphone need to be isolated and then buffered. The simplest way was using a 2 pole switch
Ultracool.
Wow! (and flutter)
