    the power of this song lies in its story and what blows me away every time is that in seven minutes a song can tell the last moment's of a lonely man's life before he throws himself from his lighthouse in an act of redemption, knowing that nothing could change the pain his actions had inflicted even if he was found innocent. 7 minutes that it takes some novels several chapters to cover!

    Man the rise in tempo and vocal intensity at the "the father of her unborn child and me" part just knocks me backwards.

      I found this band about a year ago and only really knew or listened to a couple tracks, mostly Full Moon and a couple others like Tallulah and the last drop falls, finally started listening to full albums and giving Sonata Arctica a chance. this track is amazing and instantly among my favs, I got a huge journey to go now about to start their 3rd album, thought there was no more new music for me to experience that I would like, 38 now and blown away by this stuff

      Are you aware of what the album is about then? Because those songs are sad yes. But the messages are powerful. This song is about the duality of the light and the dark inside all of us. Both must heal in order to become our true self. Continue to listen to them. Their messages can save your life one day.

    This is their Magnum Opus. Their absolutely perfect and lyrically intricate masterpiece. This song is extremely sad and complex, it brings strong emotions to me every time I hear it. There will never be another song like this in the world. I'm truly blessed to hear this absolute epitome of lyrical and musical perfection.

      +Brock David Indeed it's a very powerful song, I started listening to them yesterday. I think it's one of these bands that have to grow into you slowly with time, at first I was like "meh", but as the rhythm became faster and violent, I was captivated.

      @100189814374463868562 This song tells a story. Probably one of the most tragic stories I've ever heard or read about. Make sure you pay attention to the lyrics and the meaning. This song is very atmospheric, and fills you with such emotion.

      Brock David Tony Kakko must be the best songwriter ever. He creates beautiful and really, really sad songs. In my particular case, Shamandalie is the one that really touches my heart. Of course White Pearl, Black Oceans, Letter to Dana, My Selene, Everything fades to gray, The Dead Skin... And particulary the Caleb Saga, I can not believe that 4 different songs of differents albums and completely differents styles could make such a great history.
      Anyway, for songs like this one, Sonata Arctica is and probably will be my favorite band for the rest of my life :'-)

      They were indeed starting to prog their music but I'd say the first (and most) Prog album from them would be Unia, I would still consider this Melodic Power Metal, but that's just an opinion, I'm sure it's debatable.

    • @stephenjessop6058

      A primary characteristic of power metal is melody... Rendering melodic power metal redundant lol

    • @penguincamp
      @penguincamp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some power metal is more melodic than others. For instance, Power Quest, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica are lighter and more sugarcoated, than say, DragonForce, Hammerfall and Blind Guardian, which are heavier. It is a pretty redundant term, but there are differences.

    • @krisfaust909
      @krisfaust909 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Penguincamp Right, and the term "Melodic Power Metal" is widely used to convey those differences (e.g. Metal-Archives; various specialized magazines too).

    This song evokes such great imagery and emotion. It blows my mind how in 9 minutes we are told such a passionate and tragic story that would take an entire film or majority of a novel to capture. I wish there was a video to this, directed seriously as if it were a period movie (I always imagined circa 1600 something, maybe 1700?) and just follow the character the song is about, show the town, the woman who changed his life (better or worse) and the consequences of his actions.

    If you guys think this is sad while not even knowing half the story, you should really look at the lyrics more because it's MUCH sadder than just him feeling guilty over some affair. -.-
    Let me break it down:
    The protagonist is a very introverted man who lives a peaceful life as a lighthouse keeper. I was born and raised by the sea; shy yet proud,learned to stay away from the crowd, in my home, my lighthouse") On New Year's eve though he wants to finally do something new so he goes into the nearby town. There he meets a woman whom he falls in love with--probably his first love given the way he talks about her and given his simple life thus far. She is free-spirited though and is only with him for that night, planning to leave town on a ship in the morning. ("She had found the sails for the following night. The town, for her, was getting way too small. She promised to be mine forever, for that one night ...").
    His mind is filled with the memories of what happened, and as he thinks about it so much, he is struck probably by a passing carriage. ("Crossing the wintry fields the first-hour of morning light.Warmed by the flame inside -the lasting memory of the ending night. I never had a chance to stop what hit me, what broke my bones and mauled me..") This knocks him out cold for the entire day. When night comes, since he, the lighthouse keeper, is away from it, the beacon is not lit, making it extremely dangerous for ships. The coast would shred them if they couldn't see. ("A nightmare awakes me, blinking light, there's no guide - blind ships in the night! Oh, blood red moon, eat away the night ...") Thus he hopes that the red moon will light the sea instead of him. He did not know if they would be okay so when he arrives to town he says ("Please tell me everything is alright ..."My voice in the room broke the silence,...").
    This is when the first chorus begins and the horrible, fateful news is revealed ("All on the board the White Pearl have died! Coastal reef has tolled their lives, and you are the light of the night!"). He is to be tried in court for this. ("Love can be like poetry of demons, or maybe God loves complex irony? The family name stated I had seen before ...written on her front door!") This is when he finds out that the woman he had been with was now dead because of him. Not only is she dead, but the "father of her unborn child" is judging him. ("Silence in the courthouse!" A presence in the room we both could feel - the father of her unborn child and me.")
    Overwhelmed by the guilt of what he did, he runs to his lighthouse, the one secure thing, the one safe place he has ever known but he seeks only death now ("All on the board the White Pearl have died,coastal reef has tolled their lives,while I was the guide light! Back in my tower, run, run, run - light is out. I hope to see black oceans beneath rise and swallow me!")
    He is tried soon after and found to be innocent but ("Defining innocence is hell after all that has passed"). Ultimately he cannot live with what he did. It is tragic because of course it wasn't really his fault. All he wanted was to finally live for one life and instead he runs into the greatest tragedy he will ever face and will not live through it. ("10,000 steps down, round and round, one night on the town and I'm hell bound. Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me!") This is poetically similar to how the story began but it is a much darker tone now obviously.
    Finally the last and most intense chorus plays. He finds it fitting to die the same way those on the ship did--to drown in the black seas. ("My little tower, seal my fate,help me pay back - end their hate. Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me! One direction; down, down, down ...pitch black night for my old town, black oceans beneath shall now swallow me.") Finally there is the prayer at the end and the song is finished.
    So yeah, before you say that this song is tragic, realize that it is about a man with a simple life who decided one fateful night to try to live, met his first love, and then damned her, her unborn child, and an entire ship of people to death at sea by not being at his lighthouse only to be judged by the woman's father. Finally all this guilt causes him to kill himself. So yeah. MUCH sadder than you'd think without knowing the full story.

    • @bramrossiau991
      @bramrossiau991 8 ปีที่แล้ว +150

      +Thomas Van Valkenburgh I agree for the most part. But I think it was not a carriage that hit him, but actually the husband. (One thing, I remember, before I fell on the ground... Although I never saw the face, A name was inked in his arm...) He didn't see his attackers face, but he did see his tattoo, which was the woman's name (The family name stated I had seen before... Written on her front door...)That makes it even more sad, because then the husband is responsable for his own wifes death, too.

      I think this song appeals to me because I sort of lived it with a few other people. Nobody actually killed themselves, but I ruined their jobs because of an unforeseen circumstance mixed in with me trying to actually be confident in myself for once. At the same time, these people had these jobs because they wanted to change for the better, and my unforeseen circumstance caused their unforeseen circumstance. The past months were crazy for all of us, and in the end, two people metaphorically "committed suicide" by renouncing their positions in the job, and while nothing really happened to me, I was a total wreck for a few months.

    Don't take a bet that black people don't listen to rock or metal. You would lose. I remember when Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were all NEW bands, old, dust-coughing BLACK headbangin' SOB that I am, lol. Big props to these Finnish rockers...and to Holy Ravioli for posting their songs. I'm glad that metal's not stuck in the past, and that new bands---regardless of race or nationality---are pickin' up the torch and running with it!

    I get to know about that song two months ago, from a man who showed me the song. We wrote so much and were connected so great together, we had two beautiful dates and I was the happiest girl ever.
    After him caress my hand all night and telling me he is happy to have me and want to see me again, he was still adding that he can't give me what I expect and we can't be together as a couple. It was okay for me in that moment.
    I thought he was in love with me too... He never was. He told me that one month later. But he still wants friendship and is happy to know me... I was so hurted. I wrote many things back.
    ...He started ghosting me. It is one month ago and I can't stand this. I don't understand why and guess I never will.
    Now I can't stop playing that song, it remembers me that what the boy and me had, was real. I can feel the pain from the lighthouse man, as he lost his love and realize it was never real. That song is such a masterpiece which I can't get out of my head, and I don't want to. "Black oceans beneath come and swallow me" - I feel like drowning, too. I still have hopes and that hurts even more.
    Wherever you are, I'm still in love and will never forget you. "Forever, for that one night". F. ❤️💔 God bless you always.

    I feel deeply sorry for my ignorance. Until now I just liked the song very much (as everything by Sonata Arctica) although I never really listened to the lyrics of this particular track. I did now - and the strange combination of deep sorrow and overexcited amazement about this truly powerful story that rolled over me left me deeply touched. Indeed no music for the masses.

    This song has been strangely helpful to me in so many ways over the years.
    At first, it was the encapsulation of the loneliness and depression I had in my teens. The pairing of this beautiful music and tragic story helped me to understand that I'm not alone in my suffering.
    Later, I was posed with something called a "riddle with holes." It's something of a story that you have to figure out via yes or no questions. The one I was given was, "A man is in his house. He turns out the light and leaves his house. Later, he comes home, looks out the window, turns on the light, and kills himself. Why did he kill himself?" The answer being that he's a lighthouse operator. I was told that and tried to figure it out for three days before just singing this song to myself while on a run and it clicked.
    A year later, I'm learning a foreign language for the job I had in the military. I felt like I wasn't doing very well, and, on a whim, just sat down during my lunch break, put on this song, and started actively translating the lyrics. Not just in my head, but writing it in time with the song. The fact that I was able to keep up gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward and do well. I ended up being the best translator in my entire section once I actually got into my job, and I feel like I have this song to thank.
    I discovered Sonata Arctica by sheer accident. The band had been introduced to me on two separate occasions prior, but didn't stick in my head at the time. While perusing my sister's music collection on the computer, I found songs labeled as Nightwish, but definitely weren't. After a quick google search of the lyrics, I found the band and instantly fell in love. I'm 31 now, found them when I was 16, so nearly half of my life has been with their music.

    Had to come back and listen to this after part 2. I felt like part 2 was just really vanilla, and lacked all the beautiful weaving pieces that worked together to paint a really powerful picture like part 1. Powermetal storytelling should be exciting, but part 2 was just substandard sonata. The rest of the album was mostly pretty nice though.

    Una de las mejores canciones de Sonata. Tiene más complejidad de la que parece. Un temazo. Con esta canción despertar temprano por las mañanas es mucho menos duro!!! Larga vida a Sonata Arctica!!!
