What I don't understand is how often they don't have a water supply, in current day situations.

@@moemcgovern7345 It depends on rural or urban settings and even to the municipalities. In my case, I was a firefighter in a city of 175,000. We had farm land in the city, but with our water system, we hydrants spaced 500ft apart in the rural areas just like in the downtown.
