The belt scene was the most brutal scene in the entire series. Peter Reigert didn’t want to do it because it was originally written that Tony ripped Zellman’s underwear off. So Peter and Tony convinced David Chase to take that out. On my rewatches of the series, when it gets to the part where Tony is in the car listening/crying to ‘Oh Girl,’ I move to the next episode. I skip the brutal belt scene.
Yeah, same here. There certain scenes (that being one of them) and episodes that I have no interest watching again. But with Ceerious, f'ing bygones are never bygones!
@BronzNazareth also, the guy who Gene whacked, "Teddy" he was also in Boardwalk Empire too, one of Al's earners who got beat up at the bar by O'Banion's men.
@@Chiyomi_Anzai599 Ah yes, you mean Jake, Jake Guzik! It's amazing how big of a role they played after such a small one. It's like a cameo, but before the fact 😊
14:34 She blames you for Ronnie Zealman. You beat him with belt. He felt weak in front of her She told me he could not perform. They broke up not so long after About as direct a statement that ever came from a Russian woman with one leg. So much so that even Tony was charmed enough to sleep with her soon after. Got Carm in a real tizzy.
Tony kept getting in the way of ultimate success: alienating and hurting his political connections, killing his highest earners, antagonizing the NY family, and making a long list of enemies. It all took its toll in the end.
I find the cop getting fired situation interesting because it shows that Tony isn't actually a psychopath. He actually felt bad about what he did and tried to reverse it... just by seeing the results of his actions and nothing more. And it bothered him for an extended period of time. If Melfi had seen that she would have understood in more complexity perhaps that these men undergo the same thing many men do who go to war. In fact, they quite literally think of themselves (and refer to themselves) as soldiers. There's a mental realm you can enter psychologically that allows you to fight and commit atrocities under the self-assurance that it's for survival. These guys grew up in a certain lifestyle with very specific types of father figures. They are able to have that mental separation where they love and respect their families, animals, citizens (sometimes lol) without losing their edge or their violent, animalistic qualities. It doesn't make them healthy, but it also doesn't mean they're total sociopaths. They're just indulgent and rationalize it to the point where they're the heroes of their own story. They don't see themselves how society sees then and it creates a similar situation to that of a soldier. The belief that what you're doing is okay keeps everything in line. They DO have principles. For instance, outright sexual assault isn't typically seen from most or any of the main cast. And they sort of recoil at the idea of explicit bodily torture, especially when its one of their own (they operate mostly on the THREAT of that sort of thing, like with the Jewish rabbi thing). It's very different than the modern African American gangster scene where most of those people grow up not with hard fathers with strict rules and lifestyle expectations, but NO fathers to speak of. It's virtually two completely different things, even though at first glance, they appear as a similar thing.
