      Is there a resolution that I have to be in to have the Dynamic Balancing working? I just got my camera and cant tell a single difference when the Dynamic is on or off.

      Ya but the jerk motion gets picked up if you noticed that my Sony ccd tr3400 from 1996 had super steady shot and it was so good i'm wondering why canon after 28 years could not do as well ?

    Please can we see what the wide angle converter
    image quality looks like at 'Full Wide' ?
    Thanks.

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good point. A wide angle conversion lens must be used only when the camera is fully zoomed to the Wide (W) end. This is the only position where a wide converter lens can work properly. You can zoom, if you really need to, up to around 50mm, but not further. This is a major limitation of these lenses, you should remove them when you need tele-zooming.

    Hi I have a Panasonic DVX200. I find it quite heavy for handheld use. I am attracted to the small form factor of the Canon XF405 for certain run and gun situations. How does the Canon compare to this camera?

    We own an XF400, and the biggest frustration is not having button access to the image stabilization modes. If you go from walking, to tripod, to a long zoom, you'd essentially go from Dynamic, to off, to standard with powered IS. Having to cycle through the screen menus each time to make these changes is extremely frustrating, whereas a customizable button that would allow for switching between IS modes would solve this, and then the powered IS button could be left as-is. This request has been submitted to Canon Professional and escalated to the engineering team in Japan.

    • @ChampionshipInc
      @ChampionshipInc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it possible to change the gain control while recording? Or do you have to stop? Like your comment, it seems like this would be difficult going into menus in a live setting. Thanks!

    I’m sold! I used to have the Canon XA30. Loved it...Using standard profile is not bad, just gotta watch out on where your placing your camera in order to avoid any harsh clipping. Buy some small eye lights (Aputure , Aladdin,etc) for on the go interviews. There’s something to be said about a camera that you can just pick up and go!

  • @MauricioVives

    Carl, thanks for the video. I would like to see more about the autofocus, as that is billed as a major advantage for this compared to competitors. I would especially like to see a comparison of the AF between this one and the upcoming PXW-Z90, which has a new AF system.

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are pretty same excellent both, I wasn't able to pick a winner here. The XF400 has touch screen, but the Z90 has excellent joystick and significantly brighter and bigger EVF to control focus.

    Carl, great review. I am looking to upgrade from an 80d for educational video that is shot in a fixed location, with controlled lighting etc ... so not demanding. I am considering the XF400 or the C200. My main goal is quality and ease of use; have you compared the mp4 output of the C200 vs the XF400? Are they comparable? Also, given I will always be shooting in the office, where computers will always be near, perhaps shooting raw might be a fine (meaning won't need many cfast cards) given my videos are typically 10 minutes or less. I would appreciate you insights. Thanks!

    • @fansofER
      @fansofER 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stefan Mischook - the C200 is obviously going to produce better picture depending on the lens used. The c200 is also a much larger cinema camera that’s double the price, and can shoot in raw light internally. I’m interested in the XF-400 because it’s a very small 4K 60p camera with great autofocus. Perfect for guerrilla documentary, event shooting, and interviews. I would be comfortable taking the XF-400 places that I wouldn’t take the C200. I just wish the XF-400 could do 8-bit 4:2:2 internally. It would make this camera a home run for me....

    Thanks for taking so much time to do such a great series of tests and examples. Looks like a fabulous little camera. The 4K/60p mode is important for me, so I am thinking of abandoning my allegiance to Sony since none of their new small camcorders have 60p. One question: Since we would be using this camera underwater, I am wondering if you happen to know if you can assign any other adjustments to the small dial instead of aperture? I find it more expedient for "run & gun" and underwater applications to leave the camera in auto-iris and simply use AE shift to get the exposure right. Can you assign AE shift to the small dial instead of aperture?

      Are you planning to make half-speed 4K slowmo, right? Is this the reason you need 60fps 4K? I am wondering, if 150 Mbps 60fps/4K gives better image quality than 150Mbps 30 or 24 fps 4K?

    You have the best reviews of any I've found. You are precise, to the point, and serving the user in all your reviews. Plus, you give us plenty of examples and long enough that we can make some clear and concise conclusions. Thank you for your efforts and like you, I too like the XF400 / 405 and can't wait to get one in my camera bag. Nice work and BTW, checked out that Sennheiser AVX and will be adding a couple of those to my arsenal along with both the wide and zoom lens adapters. The only thing I would have added to the video would have been the camera's on board wide, then mount the wide adapter so that folks could have seen what the 'wide adapter' added. Then the other would have been the full zoom without adapter and with adapter. That way we could see just how much help in both directions with the added adapter. Thanks again. The Doc.

    Your ending shot where you were giving the summary of the video 13:32, the focus kept going in and out. What he manually focusing, or was the c300 dual pixel autofocus losing you and autofocusing was causing the shifting in focus?

    • @Excalibrr1
      @Excalibrr1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe my answer too late,but pay attention about XA50- no UHD 50/60p and what is worse touchscreen (and you just must use it for a lot of things to choose, main AF area etc) is only 3"" 460000pix. worse like in many consumers camcorders!!!Sad reallly sad for "profi camcorder" in 2019 for this price! And 3" vs 3.5" is big,big different for your eyes and main fingers, believe me!!! And these days f.e. is not so big different of price XA50 vs XF400(50/60p,3.5""1.55mil pix ,infrared etc) when you need (and I love to use it !) upper arm with zoom and rec button as XA50 has(and GX10 no, and I think GX10 has no infrared f.e.) ,so think to buy better XF400. I bought XF400 several weeks ago just because of this things. And I could not ever buy (and plus also give away so a lot of money) for camcorder with 3"460000px IN PRINCIPLE!!!

    I guess I just don't "get it"...the video on the split screen looks far better on the right although he says the left looks WAY better. I guess I just don't know "what I am looking at"? The "wide"dr" on the left is just too soft....might as well just shoot 1080p.....the detail is lost. I guess I am not a "PRO" who can recognize how the left is "better".

    Thank you so much for your videos, made me order one yesterday! My small production company is using the C300 MkII for the bigger direct-delivery broadcast jobs and we use the C200 for commercials and music videos. More often than I‘d like to admit, I find myself shooting local news with the C200 / 300 in WDR, so I‘m pretty sure that I will shoot a lot of news on the XF400. Used the A7Rmk3 for some of those jobs but I am hating the brittle Sony image and the non-existing flexibility (ND? 50P in UHD?!?)!...

You have raved about both this Canon XA50, the XA400 and the Sony NX80. Which one do you prefer?? We are talking about armatures on a budget shooting people running through the bush, not pros in a studio, which is why I'm steering away from DSLR's or mirrorless interchangeable lenses cams. We are talking literal run-and-gun. Also what microphone would you choose for an application like mine? Think wet foresty area, outdoors, trying to pick up groups of people who are sometimes whispering to each other. Thanks! Love this channel so much!

      I haven't found the XF400's AF any better than the Z90. Both are excellent, but I wouldn't expect miracles from neither of them, both can loose focus or can have problems in grabbing focus in harsh/extreme conditions. They are not in the same league as the Sony A9.

    Fabulous video!. You answered so many more questions than I expected. Thanks for that, a lot of thought and consideration went in there. would I be correct to assume the reason some of the footage looked a bit soft from the FX400 was that there was little if any processing "sharpening and color correction" done to the video quality, so as to keep the comparisons real?, and that`s why the C300 looked more amber than the FX400. Also the 1.4 zoom lens when attached actually seemed to speed up the focus and improve the image, whereas the 0.8 wide angle lens destroyed the picture quality completely I found that very distressing any feelings on that.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it helped
      Your right, no post processing was done to the cameras at all. You would expect the C300 II to have a better image remember, it is significantly more expensive and more powerful
      The Wide Angle adapter is not meant to be zoomed in on like I did here, bit of a mistake on my part. Thats why it destroyed the image. When the lens is at its widest it looks fine.

      The three things that kill me for the canon is no full size jack out, even the handycam version of the sony has a full size hdmi. from what i believe no 10 bit out of this camera. But, you get amazing 4k 60! Which the sony doesnt give you. Plus with that tele converter, at the wide end, you have a clost to 50mm 2.8 lens, if the converter isnt vingetting at the wide end, and i bet that'll be great for interviews to get some shallow depth of field. But thats more money than the sony's. I just dont understand why they didnt put a regular size hdmi port on this camera, i use that like 10 times a day!

      @BrunoMassao 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chrisw443 The XF405 does output 10-bit (both HDMI and SDI), but only in 1080 resolution.

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Chris, when you have the teleconverter lens, it robs about 1 stop of light. Actually how did you calculated the 50mm/f2.8 value? And as Bruno pointed out even the consumer GX10 outputs 10-bit on the HDMI.
      On the other hand you pointed out an interesting issue, the XF400 has only 35Mbps HD image, including the slow motion video that is converted from 120 fps. The Sony cameras can churn out 100Mbps 120fps, that you can slow down in post. This is not available on the XF400.

    Thank you for a great review, Carl! I am considering buying a Canon XF400 or a Sony HXR-NX80. However, it's quite hard to make out which of them is the best camera. As far as I understand the stabilization system is more sophisticated in the XF400 and it also records 50-60p in 4K. On the other hand, Sony seems to have better dynamic range, better zoom and more modes for super slow motion etc. It would be much appreciated if you or anyone else could share your thoughts about these two cameras. Thank you =)

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the XF400 has a 15x zoom and NX80 has 12x, although the clear image zoom technology from sony is very clever.
      There is definitely more slow motion options in the Sony cameras.
      I'm hoping to make a video comparing them both soon.

      I'd add that to me the real deal breaker of the Sony is the 29mm wide end vs the 25.5mm of the XF400. I love shooting wide, 15x vs 12x I don't care. This is the reason I'd seriously consider the Sony RX10IV, which has an unbelievable power-zoom lens, it's f2.4 - 4.0, 24 - 600mm 4K lens. I'd prefer the NX80 had a lens like that with 50fps 4K of course, Sony just missed the opportunity.

    • @uncledoey
      @uncledoey 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm looking at these two as well (the poorer versions, ax700 and gx10). aside from 400 dollar price difference, the canon has better auto focus, 5-matrix OSS, better touchscreen, 60p 4k and zoom. sony better slo mos, s-log and weight. i think many reviews seem to have not utilized the wide gamut setting on the canon which this vid really shows the benefit of.

    Carl You do a very good job with the reviews.
    I hope you can give an option as to what would be best.
    I am just in enthusiastic amateur video shooter. I am 99% interested in video not in stills.
    My shooting interest is fast moving family in the daytime and night street videography in the city in generally brightly lit areas.
    I currently have a GH five. It produces fantastic videos but with focus hunting especially at night. Yes I can manual focus but then I miss out on fast-changing scenes. I am okay with the lowlight ability of the GH five at night. At ISO 6400 there is noise but it does not detract from the story.
    I also want straight out of the camera I am not interested in learning to grade anything
    I am considering the GX10 the bother to XF400. I would love to have a power zoom I am a bit worried about the low light at equal ISO 6400 and sharpness. Your thoughts?
    I am also thinking of a Sony A73. I will get a low light beast with great autofocus but the only real option on that camera is 4K 24P for the sharpest image. But I will not get my power zoom and I think I will get more shaky clips handheld because the ibis is not that great? Your Thoughts?
    Thank you in advance for your comments if you have time to respond.
    I am really impressed with the IBIS on the XF405 both walking and tripod mode it is equal or better than the GH5

    Thank so much for this comprehensive test. I found it interesting that in your side by side comparison between the Wide DR mode and Standard mode, the Wide DR mode looked a bit soft. Do you think that Canon has lowered the sharpness in Wide DR by design as is done in many log profiles, so that sharpness can be added to the level desired in post-production grading? Overall I felt that most of your footage shot in the Wide DR profile was soft. Thanks again.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite possibly, its always better to add sharpness in post rather than in camera when possible
      Carl

  • @samjames2552
    @samjames2552 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had to look at your standard vs. wide dr a couple of times, because I find it interesting you thought wide DR looked better. In comparison, it lost detail and contrast, yet you thought it looked better? That's a bit confusing. Also, the image of the $3000 XF 400 pointing to your camera guy looked a lot better than that of the C-300 Mark II at more than 3x the price. In the comparison outside I don't know who did the grading of the XF-400, but it appears they like yellow/green a lot---not very natural, what's up with that? Also, why would you ever think of zooming---with a wide angle lens? That defeats the whole purpose! The XF 400 may be the camera of the year by the end of the reviews!

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, its all subjective. If you prefer the look of the XF400 and Standard Picture Profile, I guess thats what you should use!

      As Carl clearly explained at 0:39 the XF400 has no Canon Log. Wide DR cannot come even close, a Log Profile would make a really big difference. Check out Carl's other videos where he explains the enormous advantage of a Log Profile on a 1"-sensor camera.

    • @samjames2552
      @samjames2552 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you in that the "Wide DR cannot come even close" to the image of the standard gamma. Standard gamma was far sharper, more contrast, and the colors were also more vibrant. You can't even see the lines under the subjects eyes using Wide Dr, and it was obviously present in the standard gamma mode (right side). Weird how someone can find what appears to be a far smoother and less defined picture as superior!

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, I watched again a number of times the 5 second section starting at 1:32 and the right hand image is obviously much sharper and cleaner. The left hand image is really mushy, soft, lacking details. If the left hand image is really the Wide DR image, I agree you, Sam. Unfortunately, youtube is willing to play this video only in 1440p, not in 4K, maybe youtube is degrading the image quality of the Wide DR much more than the standard image.

    • @samjames2552
      @samjames2552 6 ปีที่แล้ว
