      YOU BET...and I write this as of 5/21/23 and as of last October...she's going down for her 1,472 day inspection, (yeah, right!). Good luck with that as "she" needs a rotisserie restoration that the likes that Ed Dickens, (of the UP Heritage fleet in Cheyenne WY) has never seen, even though he, (and the road), re-built 4014.

    6:23 geeeeeez. I hope that guy isn't part of the engine crew because he has no clue what he's talking about trying to describe the things in the cab.

    Geeze Travelling Tom .. you must put in a lot of windshield time. I see that your videos are all over the US ... you happen to be based in Colorado? I see a lot of Colorado action. I live in Castle Rock and recognize some of your locations. I like your videos. Thank you for your contribution to railroad enjoyment.

      Thanks Bill! I live in Denver but lived in other states over the years. I have been filming pretty steady since 2003 so there is a lot of material to get out there. I do love to travel but I am usually on a very tight budget so I have to plan these things months ahead. I have been a big fan of You tube videos for a long time. So I enjoy adding to the video collection for everyone to see.

    Either that Engineer needs to really work on his throttle and brake handling skills or that throttle valve needs some work. Seems he doesn't have much finesse. Lots of over compensation, wheel slip, flattening the drivers, and rapid reversing to stop the tender from crashing through the back of the shed. Engine needs a few leaks looked after, some new piping, and some more cosmetic work. She's a nice engine. Wish she could hit the main again and stretch her legs. A Pacific isn't meant to just mozy along at 15 mph on a light branch. She's a High Stepper that longs for the High Iron and 70 MPH (of course she isn't quite up to snuff for the main yet). Would be nice if she could have a reunion with 3751 and 2926.

      That's what I was thinking. Either the engineer is shit at his job or the brakes and throttle valve need some adjustments. There's not really any excuse for any of those things. That slide at 2:23 to 2:25 made me cringe HARD.

      In other words...the engine is a P.O.S It's been "rode hard and put up wet". Do you or anybody notice that the main piston rod coming out of the steam chest is "dusty" red when it should be pristine / clean silver? Sounds like somebody needs to look at her "rings", and other implements within her steam chest for starters. YIKES!!!

    • @steamandsmoke97
      @steamandsmoke97 ปีที่แล้ว

      @1chuck96 For starters, the Steam Chest, or more appropriately Valve Chest is where the actual Spool Valves are located for steam distribution. The actual Pistons are within the Cylinders which are beneath the Valve Chests. Secondly, that brown muck is old congealed cylinder oil that is just being flushed out. Aside from making anything near the neighborhood of the packing gland on the cylinders look like shit, and making the cylinder cocks sticky, it's harmless. Should they have pulled the pistons and valves and put new rings, valve cages, and sleeves in? Maybe, but neither you or I have seen the internal condition of the cylinders to make that judgement. However, it does not sound like there is much in the way of blowby, so that says her cylinders and valve chests are still reasonably tight. However, after reading about how John Rimmasch botched the boiler work on this engine, among other things, and the organization that the Engine belongs to not having the most skilled crew in the world, this engine should definitely not be in service as there are several CFR violations that this Engine continues to operate with.
