Don Vest This was so fun and relaxing. It just doesn’t get better than this. I’m so glad we have a fun video to look at to remember the day, and it’s sure fun to share it with everyone
I recently took delivery of an Accucraft On30 RGS short caboose, #0401, for my model railroad. So thank you Toy Man for letting us enjoy the real thing.
Having being involved with the Friends a little FYI. The Friends wanted to run a genuine looking RGS charter last year so we got John Bush (General manager of the CATS) to call up his old boss from his Georgetown Loop days about loaning the CATS their 400 caboose in exchange for the Friends fixing it up and painting it inside and out. The "private caboose" was originally a stock car and was totally rebuilt as a parlor car caboose by the Friends for the railroad. We took that car all the way down to the trucks and rebuilt it to the car you see today. The plaque on the interior is about Bob Tully who was the Friends project leader for many years who's vision led to the creation of that caboose. Bob was a wonderful guy and that honor was well earned.
Ken Morgan We sure love to see people from all over the world watching the videos. Just really makes you feel close to the entire planet. Thank you for watching!
You, sir, have adequately captured the romance, joy, and excitement of steam railroading. This video is a treat, best one I've seen in a while. Music choices were perfect. Bravo!
Thank you! That was a really fun trip and we were planning a similar trip in August. I hope that goes forward and doesn’t get destroyed by the virus. If so there will be another year.
The D&RG railroad chose to summit at Cumbres pass because it was the lowest pass in the Rockies. Locals recommended that the railroad go over the next southern pass, even though it was higher, because it got much less snow. As it turned out, Cumbres pass got the most snow in the Rockies!
What a fantastic privilege! Darn it, actually brought a tear to my eye. Back in the 70's I lived in Golden and had a brand new CJ-5 Jeep. I drove that sucker all over CO., even out onto the plains. Dated a beautiful Spanish girl from La Veta who could trace her ancestors back nearly 400 years in N America. Wish I would have married her! Some of the narrow gauge rails were still in place. Where they were not made for excellent trails for my jeep. The D&RG hadn't been swallowed up by the UP, there was still a daily train on the RI from Limon to Colo. Springs and Denver. Tennessee Pass and the Royal Gorge still saw regular freight service. It was a beautiful time. This video brought that back for a bit. Thanks!
You have got screwing around on trains to perfection. And what a delight it must be to be able to share it with your lovely woman. A great team. I had 7 acres in Steamboat Springs back in the 80's and unfortunately I was not able to live the dream of having a log cabin there and enjoy screwing around in that beautiful part of the world and enjoy the train rides with fall colours. Your video shows me what I missed out on but wonderful to see it through your eyes and view its professionalism. Well done.
Thank you for posting. I've ridden this railroad four times and chased the train on three different occasions and I still never tire of seeing awesome footage. I only wish I could have chased the train on that day.
Must have been a wonderful ride, especially in a caboose. The music fitted perfectly and I could imagine, in the trnquility of the ride, that it was the late 1800s where time ran by at a slower rate than it does today. Thanks for sharing this great experience with us. Regards, Paul, in Cornwall. U.K.
So there are three cabooses. Two of them are from the D&RGW and the last one is from the RGS and the train is pulled by D&RGW 487 (A K-36 class built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925), I did mentioned you that I had rode behind 487 from Osier, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico after we rode behind D&RGW 463 (A K-27 class built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903).
Great to see the little caboose! Fun video. Thank you. When traveling by car, as I recall - I could literally see Durango and Silverton from switchbacks as I came over the Rockies towards Cortez - miles away! Absolutely a highlight! I wanted to do a train ride but hadn’t budgeted it. In 1972 the Hotel Cortez rates were $1, $2, or $3 a night.
Douglas Ridgers oddly enough I can watch this one over and over as well because it’s like home movies of a very very wonderful day. Glad others can enjoy it as much as we do.
Wow, wow, 😮! One of your longest and best videos ever! And at just the right time of year to see all the fall colors. Thank you 😊 so much. Also, so happy for the both of you, finding each other to enjoy 😉 these times together. Blessings.
Oskar0110 You’re a pretty easy group to get along with two generally speaking. Like all nations we have some lunatics, but do come you’ll have a grand time!
Heartgear One And it’s so great to this railroad has been preserved. In part because it is out here in the middle of nowhere but what a beautiful middle of nowhere it is
I just got a little misty-eyed watching that video. Great Show! I got to ride the Durango and Silverton during their Christmas season in 2015. It was an astonishing (and cold) trip. Cumbres and Toltec is on the list for next time. This history these railroads preserved is difficult to explain, but easy to see. It's also easy to see their importance. No other railroad on Earth has this kind of equipment, and enough support to keep the trains running.
James Willmus it’s amazing to think that this line shut down just two weeks before men orbited the moon. 1968. So glad that these two sections were preserved, this section really was saved the last possible minute. Not widely known there’s another section between these two sections that are still in track! But it’s a very short section there’s one car sitting out there on the track but it’s amazing to see rail out there on the Indian reservation. Only about a quarter of a mile of track, small switching yard, but it’s there at Gato junction.
Pagosa Junction. The poor old water tower fell down, but the track is indeed still there, rusting away. Despite that though, your channel shows us that there is a railroad renaissance happening in this country. People say that the hobby is dying, but I find that hard to believe seeing how much cool stuff you've shown us the last couple of years. Keep up the great work!
JUST a great trip, I did the short trip back in the late 70s and really wish I could get to do it again thanks for showing it to me again, and for sharing! Jack
You are a fabulous couple and thank you so much for this. The most beautiful part of America. I am familiar with the Durango and Silverton, because I went to College in Durango. This is a great video and thanks again so much.
William Callaway DeRego and silver turn our wonderful because they’re such fun places to visit. This railroad is totally off the beaten path really pack your own lunch!! But what a fun and amazing railroad
Your shows just keep getting better. Where to start; OK, we've taken the the C&T tourist train, and your stuff is better than the real thing. And the real thing is terrific. Your cinematography is professional grade. You pick great angles and scenes. You should look into having it shown on your local PBS affiliate. Your music selections are perfect. Your editing is outstanding; your synchronization with live sound, music, and video, again, is professional grade. Balanced so well, only a trained ear can hear it. I could go and on, but in ending, congratulation. Very nicely done.
Thanks!! We love screwing around making these, the up side over even PBS is no producer wanting it done there way! Often some of the stupidest ideas you will ever hear. SO we get to just have fun. Drink coffee in the morning and beer later on. And ride trains and play with cool cars. Gee.........
William Victor is totally correct...your videos are network quality, but understand you need control over your creativity. Don't need a producer screwing around and changing things...we'll take 'em any way we can get 'em. 😀
Long time no see. I think you two are wonderful. I'm off work for medical issues. I am on a budget and have to stay close to home. I travel through others and I hope to enjoy your program more often. Keep doing wonderful things. I wish you lots of good sponsors. We all have bills to pay. I'm just trying to get better.
Always kick my rear as to why I didn't go to Chama when I went to Durango .Oh well a ride I will never get to . Must been a blast without tourists. Nice dramatic music .Probably one of the best videos on the ride. Many thumbs up on this one Dale and Karyn .

Your most outstanding one yet! The scenes are magnificent, owing to the Hand of our Great Creator; but, you have captured them as I'm sure He intended for all of us see. Your selection of music accompaniment was absolutely perfect. My neurologist is taking me off everything I've been on for the past 18 years and is substituting the requirement to watch this video every morning to start off my day. The medicine is strong with this one! Thank you, my dear friends, for a real keeper! Ahhhhhhh....

This trip was unexpected... But well worth it!! The whole journey was relaxing! Especially after working all summer on the third apartment renovation! (We own and manage rental properties.) So nice to just enjoy the fall colors and kick back! The area reminded me of my home.. Rural Utah.. Before moving to Salt Lake City. Lots of memories made that day!! Thanks for watching!! :D :D

To see this in operation makes my heart soar. My Grandpa, Bill Herbstritt worked as a mechanic on the Pittsburg, Shawmut and Northern and their Hoodlebug. It was a rough and tumble railroad, but the people loved it. Unfortunately, very little remains, Thank you for all you do, while having fun...It means a great deal to me.
Hi. This was sure a fun train ride. We have tickets to ride again in September. Well we had tickets last September and that got canceled so we said just hang onto them will be back next year
Carl Sorensen NB7C yep and the friends just finished putting it together for him and this was the first run for the little thing. They kept the restoration really basic.
What a cozy little caboose ride among some of the most majestic scenery in Colorado. It looks like you both had the time of your lives, Dale & Karyn! Thanks for sharing this spectacular journey on TH-cam! -from Tom Pilling
ATSF Venta Spur Nscaler As we were leaving town I wanted to light a fire in that stove! It was a bit chilly but in truth it was an absolutely beautiful day once the chill was off the air. It just doesn’t get better than that
This is whithout a doubt the best video you have ever posted. The production is extraordinary. Thank you for giving me a look at something I've wanted to do my entire life. But with my age & health I doubt I will ever get a chance to ride a steam train. Thanks again.
@@ToyManTelevision Because I spent my life writing & photographing for car & motorcycle magazines, I criss-crossed North America at the wheel of an old VW camper. Anything I made went back in to keep things going to the next place. I've seen every kind of racing there is -- even with ride on lawnmowers. But that's all gone now, my health is not well, and I'm living in the no longer running VW at a friend's shop. The small public check I get barely buys some food and a few other things (no, no booze or drugs, I've never done that stuff). I find some good feelings in your C&T videos but that quickly goes away when the reality of never going there sets in.
You kids are spoiled rotten... Or should I say you're blessed beyond measure... LOL 😋... But thank you for taking me along with you on this ride it was mighty beautiful scenery that I'm going to have to re-watch it time and time again. That's the best part about your videos I can watch them whenever I want to but this was a beautiful ride thank you for taking me with you... And is always be blessed... BBE 🤗🤗👍😀👍😁😳
Bobby Baldeagle hello there! Boy this was some fun too, one of the best train rides ever. Perfect weather good people great Train and our own little caboose. And so glad we could take everyone along with us on the channel! Stay well have a nice day!
Hey Toy Man! Love your shows. I just started as a conductor with UP and found your videos shortly after. I love railroad history and one day want to start setting up my own model set. Thanks for the entertainment and the knowledge!
Thanks right back to you. Boy this was a fun trip and a fun video to make. We are now making plans for A trip west Indian at Disneyland involving all manner of narrow gauge trains and Santa Claus!
My wife and I enjoyed the Cumbres and Toltec ride much more than Durango and Silverton. We will ride the C&T again sometime. I enjoyed the video a lot and sure wish I could ride the caboose but most likely is not going to happen.
John Gallagher keep an eye on The friends of the cumbers and toltec website. They just threw this trip up at the last minute we got a phone call it was there, but as it was just a last minute thing they were only charging $50 for it!
Beautiful relaxing video. In love the Narrow Gauge Railroads and New Mexico/ Colorado. I would love to do this and become a steam locomotive student, on my bucket list before I leave this earth. Thanks for making this video.
Love your videos. Agreed...we seemed to enjoy the C&T a bit more than the D&S. It's not as popular but goes through a different landscape that transitions slowly from ranch land to the top of the pass. Not as fancy as the D&S, (we love both trains) but gritty and real...
Can't figure why the two ends never thrive. Not a decent eat'en place anywhere. Fair motels in Chama, but when Subway is the best restaurant in town... AS, bring a sack lunch and have a ball....
Thank you for all the great videos guys. It's nice to have some uplifting content on the old computer these days. Your talent is legend Dale. Keep it up - living vicariously through you two.
I found the open camera car to be great at the back of the train, but not right behind the locomotive for all the cinders. We had the first ride of the season and the snow was just plowed the day before. So we could just reach out the car in some places and grab a hand full of snow. The conductor got a bit angry at us for having a snow ball fight in the car. I hope to go back and do the full run again some day. Would love to ride in a caboose. I have a photo where we stopped at the top of the pass to test the brakes. I can only see the top half of the train because of the snow depth. I love your real train videos.
You two are great. So glad I found the channel. The stuff you get into look like a lot of fun. Have a great one and see you on the next video! I'm looking forward to it.
John French we are glad you found the channel too!! Always fun to have people watch the videos. We have a ball making them but it’s really satisfying when people watch them!
LOL! Dale and I have started collecting Tshirts everywhere we travel.. So.. We always dress alike! People do notice! LOL! I did love that trestle.. Amazing scenery!!
Steve Mellin it’s absolutely amazing! The debate rages on over which is better DeRego Silverton or Cumbres and toltec But that’s like trying to decide between your left foot or your right foot. They’re totally different but you got a love them both
Beautiful countryside. Some day I'm going to take my bucket list train trip and get on Amtrak up in Indianapolis to Chicago to Colorado and then rent a car and drive to both of those railroads and take the trips on them....someday.
Rebel9668 or you could take the Southwest Chief to Albuquerque, check out AT&SF 2926 (NMSL&RHS), take the Rail Runner to Santa Fe, as a side round trip, then drive to Chama, Durango, Royal Gorge, Grand Canyon.... :)
Awesome experience you guys, I would much rather do this than the passenger train!! Unless it was dans, Eureka I so wish that there was a way to be able to connect the two railroads again. Cumbria and Toltec/ Durango Silverton

To see this in operation makes my heart soar. My Grandpa, Bill Herbstritt worked as a mechanic on the Pittsburg, Shawmut and Northern and their Hoodlebug. It was a rough and tumble railroad, but the people loved it. Unfortunately, very little remains,
Thank you for all you do, while having fun...It means a great deal to me.
Hi. This was sure a fun train ride. We have tickets to ride again in September. Well we had tickets last September and that got canceled so we said just hang onto them will be back next year
Ridden this line three times. Well done video. Thank you.
I AM VERY ENVIOUS! What a day you had, the caboose, weather, autumn colours and steam loco...looks perfect.
struck2soon It was so darn fun! I’m so glad we were able to take everyone along with us on the channel
What a wonderful, peaceful world out there ! I love Your train videos ! Thank You showing them to us !
So do I. Amazing place. I have been to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, back in July 2nd 2016 and July 3rd 2022.
What a wonderful trip. Thanks for sharing.
pbyfr We had so much fun, and so glad we could take everyone along!
Wonderful scenery, boy am I envious. I didn't know Lyndsay's caboose ended up on the C&T

ATSF Venta Spur Nscaler As we were leaving town I wanted to light a fire in that stove! It was a bit chilly but in truth it was an absolutely beautiful day once the chill was off the air. It just doesn’t get better than that
I didn't want this video to end. Magnificent!
manu bird We didn’t want to ride the end! What a fun day
This is whithout a doubt the best video you have ever posted. The production is extraordinary. Thank you for giving me a look at something I've wanted to do my entire life. But with my age & health I doubt I will ever get a chance to ride a steam train. Thanks again.
Thanks!l!! We had a ball. Whatever your situation is, I hope you are happy. And perhaps you can and will. Stay happy.

Because I spent my life writing & photographing for car & motorcycle magazines, I criss-crossed North America at the wheel of an old VW camper.
Wonderful video, love the Rio Grande Southern caboose, and the color of the fall leaves. Great video.
upsd402 that’s a great little caboose, they have the exact same thing at Knottsberry farm. Rio Grande southern short caboose how fun!
I really love those K36 locomotives! They are handsome!
I have one in 1/20.3 scale. Just huge! Weighing about 40 pounds.
Bobby Baldeagle I love to watch it again and again myself! Did not want that ride to end!
I especially love a great caboose ride.
Hey Toy Man! Love your shows. I just started as a conductor with UP and found your videos shortly after. I love railroad history and one day want to start setting up my own model set. Thanks for the entertainment and the knowledge!
Hi. Welcome aboard. UP is a great company to work for. Congratulations!! You going to model the UP??
I definitely want to. I work the St Louis Service Unit so id like to model some of my running areas for my kids (and me!)
You are a fantastic couple doing a superb job ! Many thanks !
Thanks right back to you. Boy this was a fun trip and a fun video to make. We are now making plans for A trip west Indian at Disneyland involving all manner of narrow gauge trains and Santa Claus!
Greatest train ride ever!
What a day!!
Expensive but worth it.
Wonderful footage and great coverage. Wish I was there!
It was amazing Grand day out!!!!!
This maybe my favorite video from you. Thanks for taking us along.
This was a great day. Sigh. Just magic.
Wow, excellent video! Outstanding!
Chris Parfeniuk Well thanks for that glad you liked it! We sure had a lot of fun making it
I'm in love with the K-36 locomotives. Literally. They are so beautiful.
Yup. Truth.
Now we know how much fun it's possible to have for mature folk such as ourselves
This was the best trip EVER.
Wow what a great experience. . I envy youse guys. Thanks for a great video!
OÄKTA DOPBOK It was really really fun too I’m so glad we were able to put it up on the channel and share it with everyone
What a beautiful fall day. Loved the scenery and the historic equipment and structures. Very relaxing video entertainment.
JerkRice We could not of asked for a better day or a finer trip. Just an absolutely perfect trip over a beautiful railroad
One of your best Videos!!! Even the music is good! Cumbres and Toltec here I come!
It was an awesome day out!! We were lucky

Randy's Rock and Roll Railroad Mccarter - just the right amount of JJ Abrams lens flare. :)
Such a fun and relaxing trip!
Just amaaaazing footage!! WOW. So much thanks for showing this /Henrik
Thanks for watching. It was a grand day.
Thank you for all the great videos guys. It's nice to have some uplifting content on the old computer these days. Your talent is legend Dale. Keep it up - living vicariously through you two.
Mark Evans Thank You!!
Beautiful video thanks 🙏
Thanks
great video you two thanks for sharing !
saltleywsc Thank You for watching and commenting!
This is SO FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! You do need to watch for cinders everywhere in the train.
You guys are great!! Gonna do it when i retire!! Love it!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
You two are great. So glad I found the channel. The stuff you get into look like a lot of fun. Have a great one and see you on the next video! I'm looking forward to it.
John French we are glad you found the channel too!! Always fun to have people watch the videos. We have a ball making them but it’s really satisfying when people watch them!
amazing video Dale.
What a nice video, music and all
Your a Great producer
What a spectacular route! Crossing the trestle was AMAZING! (I love the T-Shirts you're both wearing)
LOL! Dale and I have started collecting Tshirts everywhere we travel.. So.. We always dress alike! People do notice! LOL! I did love that trestle.. Amazing scenery!!
Truly an amazing trip and a great video!
What a grand day out!!!!!!
Wow Epic , what a trip same trip i took 40 yrs ago , couldn't tell if ya'll left at Chama ? Years ago we had a ranch out of Chromo thank- you
Wow what a ride ill be thier in June can't wait
Steve Mellin it’s absolutely amazing! The debate rages on over which is better DeRego Silverton or Cumbres and toltec But that’s like trying to decide between your left foot or your right foot. They’re totally different but you got a love them both
Awesome...thankyou so much for sharing.....
Williams Technology such a fun day out. Love watching the video of it. Thanks for joining us.
Sounds like a fun place to go visit one day!
Zoink! That was one awesome video!
Zonk back!!!!! What a trip!!
I'd rather keep it simple. I've never been further west than Kansas City in my life and I was too young to remember that, lol.
What a relaxing trip. Specially the blue skies with no chemtrails.
What a place!! AND they have stars in the sky at night. Lots of em.
joe Ha! Chama NM really is off the beaten path. Fortunately Los Alamos is not too far away. ;)
Awesome experience you guys, I would much rather do this than the passenger train!! Unless it was dans, Eureka
I so wish that there was a way to be able to connect the two railroads again. Cumbria and Toltec/ Durango Silverton
