Does the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid bring ENOUGH performance & range?

  • The NEW RAV4 Prime is here to change the way you view a plug-in hybrid SUV forever. Under the hood is a 2.5L inline-4 that in conjunction with two electric motors produces 302HP with AWD! That allows the RAV4 Prime to be the fastest 4-door Toyota. The exterior has all the great styling of the regular RAV4 plus features unique 18in wheels. On the inside you will find that there is still a ton of room for passengers cargo, and features a new gauge layout. Does the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE plug-in hybrid have ENOUGH performance?

    If most days are under 40 miles, it is like having full EV 90% of time, and need gas only 10%. But you save at least $15k compared to TESLA and have no worries about range for long trips. This is the way to go!

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And you get great build quality AND reliability, something not included with Tesla.

    After watching your review, I did reserve this car. I love the performance of this car, the EV range is very good for my daily use, it is going to save me a lot money on gaz. The only issue with this Rav4 Prime is the availability, people has to wait a long time before they can get a hold of this car.

    Just two correction to your well put together review. Rav4 Prime battery is located underneath the floor. Under the rear seat we have a charger and some electronics for a rear motor. Also, none of the version of Rav4 Prime has fog lamps. What we can see on XSE version are vertical accent lights. That is how Toyota officially calls them.

    This is a top contender for my next car. I would save an insane amount of gas since I don't have any long commutes. I could probably get 90% of my driving done on the EV power alone. The fact that you get a full 7500 rebate with this car brings it into my price range. The very top of my price range, but considering how much it offers compared to anything else I'm looking at it would be well worth the cost.

They have all said the and the plug-in charger is under the seat. Here is a video with the hybrid next to the prime showing the battery being underneath the vehicle. th-cam.com/video/xNWthazxCGs/w-d-xo.html

    I'm a big fan of this Rav4 Prime. It really is the best of both worlds, a pure EV for the daily commute and an excellent hybrid system for up to 600 mi. Based on my driving, this thing would cut my fuel consumption by about 80-90 percent. It's pricey, but with a 8 and 10 year warranties on the hybrid system and battery...and Toyota's known reliability, I think it's worth it especially if you plan to keep it thru the warranties. I would gladly put my fuel savings toward the monthly payment on the Prime rather than buying gas every week. I think I've found my next vehicle! Nice review!

    OK, for a Toyota, I'm Impressed!
    Pricing @ $38,000-$42,000, is excellent for what your getting.
    Interior is updated, quite well, however, only one pocket in the back of the passenger side seat, is just dumb. You either have one on each seat back, or nothing at all!
    Rear cargo space, is more than I'd need, even with the rear seats upright!
    Road Test feedback from you, was impressive as well!
    Overall, this has to be the first Toyota, that has me wanting to give it a shot, in a very long time, from this Honda loyalist!

    I would really love it if Toyota would release a full EV Rav4..with this styling exterior, and some tweaks on the interior, it would be a dream car! The Nissan Ariya might have a worthy competitor when that time comes.

    Good review! But now I am feeling hungry :-/
    Space measurements:
    Can hold a Taco in the door pocket together with two bottles.
    Slit infront for Heath bar or 3 Musketeers.
    Space for 8 to 10 Twinkies in the center console.
    Arm rest with enough space for 4 hot dogs from 7-Eleven.
    No spot to place a sandwich for riders in the rear seats.
    Space for emergency box of Twinkies in the back.

    Great Review RR. Sure seems like a winner. The 40 miles of electric drive will allow a lot of folks to commute on electric mode alone - especially if they can plug in at work.
    Perhaps I missed it - but what are the MPG/ MPGe figures? Wondering if the 'hybrid' version gets 40+ on the hwy or perhaps less because of the extra weight? Also don't recall you clarifying if the motor adds to the propulsion (I'm guessing it does) vs. just charging the batteries.

    They’ll be drag racing RAV4s soon. 🚗 The XSE trim will probably cost you around $47k fully loaded. The RAV4 is an excellent vehicle. My only issue with it is that they don’t offer leather seats. Nah. I think the next step for Toyota is putting solid state batteries in the 2nd generation rav4 prime. Will be lightweight which will lead to faster 0 to 60, my guess is 0 to 60 in 4.7/4.8 seconds, highter mpg at high speeds, something like 42/43 mpg combined and longer EV only range, something like 80 miles.

    • @bradhoots8547
      @bradhoots8547 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Might want to compare Toyota plug in vehicle sales vs Tesla sales last year. Pretty revealing as to "what people really want".

      @@bradhoots8547
      Rav4 hybrid sales topped 104,000 in north america in 2019. With a 700 plus percent growth in 1st quarter of 2020. Toyota Corolla hybrid increased by over 300 percent during the same period.
      At this pace, the Toyota rav4 hybrid would overtake the tesla model 3 and leave it behind this year. The thing is, I think the rav4 prime will even overtake the rav4 hybrid in sales. Even the corolla hybrid could overtake the Tesla model 3 by the end of 2020 at it,s rate of growth
      In fact, I think the rav4 prime will overtake the regular rav4 if Toyota can get enough batteries.
      Google this
      "Toyota,s hybrid sales surge"
      The thing is, people want Toyota,s hybrids because they are reliable, durable and long lasting. They simply cant build them fast enough.
      Google this
      "Toyota,s hybrids are the longest lasting hybrids"
      In fact Toyota hybrids are among the longest lasting vehicles among all cars with the highlander hybrid ranking fifth. Incredible for a hybrid.
      Once Toyota puts their solid state batteries in the rav4 prime, it,s game over for everybody.
      Look.
      Even the slow but highly efficient prius prime is seeing huge demand but Toyota is building very little of them.
      Google this
      "Prius prime scarcity"
      People just love toyota,s hybrids.

    • @bradhoots8547
      @bradhoots8547 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lollymanna The growth numbers are a mirage. Toyota didn't sell many 2019 Rav4 Hybrids until Q2 2019, it's not that demand is exploding so much as they just didn't have any to sell at the time. And few people even wanted the 2018 Rav4 hybrid because it was ugly with severely dated styling. The 2019/2020 is an appealing car, no doubt, but it's not an EV.
      You can't compare demand for hybrid cars with BEV's or even PHEV's. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Nobody in the market for an EV is going to settle for a hybrid only car. Toyota has said that solid state battery tech is at least 5 years away and probably longer due to the pandemic, so I don't even know why that is an issue here. It's likely that someone will beat them to that technology anyway. Probably a maker that actually produces BEV's like VW, Volvo or Tesla.
      I want to be wrong and think that Toyota or Honda would see the demand for BEV's, but so far it's baby steps for them. I have had several Honda - all great cars. They know that once that happens repair and engine parts profits will tank, which is where most of their profit comes from.
