40 years later and Bill is still the most interesting jazz pianist.

THAT IS A TRUE STATEMENT. I'VE OFTEN WONDERED WHY BILL STANDS ALONE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS AS ONE OF THE GREATEST, IF NOT THE GREATEST, IMPROVISATIONAL PIANO PLAYER IN JAZZ. ANOTHER MYSTERY BEYOND OUR UNDERSTANDING, I GUESS.

We should all strive to be half as good at something as Bill Evans is at playing the piano.

Two heavyweight legends, such passion ,the only drummer that you dont hear you feel, nobody mastered brushwork like joe,he revolutionized the art of not being heard,he hated bashers,i remember him telling me that on numerous occasions,Philly Joe told me a drummer should be felt not heard,a very interesting concept to me at that time.

I think too many of the greats wandered off course. For me, Evans stayed true to the pursuit of melody, harmony, and beauty. Love his music.

Thanks for this upload. I absolutely love this recording. Philly Joe Jones is my favorite jazz drummer and it's a joy hearing/watching him play with Bill, who happens to be my favorite pianist. Marc Johnson and Lee Konitz are beast players well. Although these musicians knew each other pretty well, there are nowhere near enough recordings of them playing together. This strays from the style in which Evans usually played but in a nice and refreshing way. It's kind of a shame that the sound quality isn't the best but still a joy to hear.

How on earth did Jones get that killer warm sound out of that Premier 2000 snare drum?? I have one and it’s the most ringing, uncontrollable things ever despite having great snare response.

How did the camera operator manage not to bump the high hat at 21:54? Philly Joe did an amazing job keeping his concentration on that solo when a camera was grabbing wide angle shots at point blank range all over the equipment.

Unique and interesting trio in Evans career. They make quite a few good statements musically. Both Bill and Philly Joe had giant talent (egos?), of course, as major modern jazz icons. Marc was on his way to the stars, well deserved. I really enjoy this clip

I was fu***ng there, a child almost, and I loved the whole set, despite jazz not being my thing! Basically, I like Monk, Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton and Bill Evans. Uh: and Coltrane+Monk the cd.
Friends hated me for having had the "luck" to get to see B.E., Jaco Pastorius, Lee Konitz...Nina Simone, Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn: as a kid, you have to be smart enough to avoid all the mainstream sh**.
I also saw and get to meet (!!!) ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM, 1990, in Sanremo, Italy and in Sevilla, Spain, 1992.

Not a great combo in my opinion. Works here but on so many recordings and appearances, Jones and Evans are a disappointment for listeners. Bill liked the loud and chauvinistic Jones but, really, Marty Morrell, was the greatest of all the trio drummers.

The Peacocks is a really interesting composition, although not one of my favorites from Evans' repertoire. Nevertheless, this is my favorite rendition done by Evans, he was getting onto something during his improvisation.

Pretty chaotic for Evans, don't you think? And it gets worse when Konitz joins the group. If you want to hear some really great alto playing on "Solar", listen to David Schildkraut on the original version with Miles Davis from April 1954.
