A year ago I would have disagreed with the Hall of Fame talk. But, since Joe Mauer has been selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, this certainly opens the door for Don Mattingly. He should be in the MLB HoF. Like Boston should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He is a hall of famer and my favorite player growing up. I had his Topps rookie card and a friend of mine brought it to a game and got him to autograph it for me. He always batted above .300 and regularly hit 30+ HR’s and over 100 RBI’s and he had some gold gloves too.
He was my dreamer to be like he. Also from Evansville, Indiana. I, Timothy Lee Gray was a first baseman in baseball when was growing up. Now today "50yr" birthday. Sorry not playing anymore. Besides I was hit by car when I was 15yrs old at Harrison High school.
Couple notes. Minor league is affiliated lower level.professional baseball, not amateur. It's Gold Glove, not Golden Glove. Other than that, great vid. I'm a huge Mattingly fan, and my first memories of baseball are of Don Mattingly and the 87 Yankees.

Mattingly is a hall of fame worthy player because his average 162 game season says so, his glove says so, his peak says so and because the HOF itself set a standard of ten years playing time in MLB to be eligible. It is time to stop punishing players who don't have counting stats it takes 15-20 full seasons to approach. As a Yankee fan, Mattingly is my second biggest omission after Munson, who is only excluded because he died. In the 1970s, he was the best overall catcher in baseball, besting Bench and Fisk in nearly every defensive and offensive statistic. He was an MVP and ROY and possibly the greatest postseason player in history. He played the requisite ten seasons and his ten season career was certainly HOF caliber. His exclusion is honestly disgusting to me. Because as I said, he's literally not in because he died.
Minus the injury, based on his 162 game average, had he not missed that time and had the injury caused regression, he would have had around 2,500 hits by the time he retired in 95. But then, no I jury, maybe no retirement. Then he's 3 mediocre for him seasons from 3,000. Of course, as a Yankee fan, I can't help but wonder what becomes of the dynasty. Do they win all those rings with Mattingly instead of Tino? So much changes. Mattingly was a 2-3 hitter and Tino was a 4-5. With Mattingly still on the team, Paul is batting in a different spot, maybe Jeter too. Who knows what happens.
