  • Myasthenia Gravis Pathophysiology and Symptoms | Nursing Lecture
In this video, we're walking through the pathophysiology of myasthenia gravis and the signs and symptoms of it. We're also going to go through, step by step, the critical thinking behind it all, so you're not just memorizing information for your nursing school exam, but you actually will know how to critically think through it all.
    Myasthenia Gravis Pathophysiology:
Myasthenia gravis is a neurological condition that prevents muscles from contracting like they should.
The patient's own immune system creates antibodies to attack the connection between neurons and muscles at the neuromuscular junction. In this case, the autoantibodies are being created to attack the postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
Normally, the neuron releases a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which then goes and binds to these nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and this causes your muscles to contract. Since those antibodies have attacked those receptors, the acetylcholine can't bind there.
This prohibits the muscles from contracting so the muscles can't contract like they should.
    Myasthenia Gravis Signs and Symptoms:
Here's a list of some of the common signs and symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis. In the video, we'll walk through the critical thinking for each of these and why they happen. So you won't need to memorize this list because you'll actually understand the critical thinking behind each of these for your nursing exam.
    Eyelid drooping or Ptosis
    Respiratory Depression
    Strabismus
Weakness in face, neck, arms, legs, hands
Problems swallowing, gagging, and difficulty protecting their airway
Slurred speech or a hoarse voice
    An overall sense of tiredness
