    Joel! Thank you. Our five month old Golden Retriever puppy would also bolt out the door when I opened it and said, “okay”. Yesterday, I used your method with an 8’ leash. I said okay, she bolted out, hit the end of the leash and was completely surprised. I tried it two more times and she waited like you’ve shown. One and done! Today, my wife opened the door, said ok and the pup just stood there looking at her waiting as they both walked out the door together. Again, thanks!

    That looks like a high energy dog. Love to see how he gets the dog to chill so training can take place. That was my dog when I got him from the shelter. It took alot of walking miles to get mine to find its way to chillville.

      This is the only way I can bring a dog to chill as well. I have always said a tired dog is a well behaved dog. However, Joel fascinates me with his ability to control so many animsls without that two hour walk. On the other hand, having Prince and the rest of the pack seems to help out a lot.

    Another great video! My dog and I got our first loose leash walking compliment today. A man and his chihuahua (who had passed us on our very first training day abt 2 1/2months ago) walked by us today. This time instead of lunging, barking and flipping out, my dog walked by with only a quick glance at the chihuahua. The man couldn’t believe it was the same dog. Your techniques really work. Ty again. Tshirts pls!!!

    I have one here that came like that. Under socialized with other dogs, animals, people. He ran like that with my dogs as if just burning off stress. In a few days he now blends right in with my ten dogs as he has learned how to be part of the pack. I am also doing duck work with him since he is a herding breed. He is the type that over reacts to touch, being bumped by a dog, etc but getting better rapidly from running with my pack. Also, yes hard to get some things to come through on video. On my duck work video I can see when the dog actually looks and starts to work the ducks and isn't just running wild, but you can't see it on the videos. Love your videos.

    She looks, and acts like my rescue! She's 8 months at this point, and she plays with this weird run with the 6 month old puppy. They have really textbook healthy play (my dog was with a foster with 2 adult dogs, so I think that helped) and then she does the weird run where she chases and then flops over like "Oh, you got me!" and lets the smaller dog "get her". I have no idea if this is what this dog is doing, but it looks VERY similar.

    Nicely done. I’ve talked about “feel” before & part of that is having good timing.
    Joel’s timing could not be more flawless. I believe this is why occasionally, he will avoid giving a correction altogether because he misses the opportunity or the sweet spot for optimal timing.
    Well done!🙏🏼

      I agree with you. If he misses the opportunity, it's not like he can go back. To me, that's why it's so important to practice, practice, and practice some more. None of Joel’s videos seem to be rehearsed. I believe he would be the exact same standing in front of any one of us and our dog as he is in the videos. I love that.

    My dog is a rescue from about 5 years back and I have noticed that he does not like it if I hold his collar. I think the previous owners abused him...grab the collar and jerk and drag him. I also think they would hit him with the TV remote and their hands. For the first year, if I reached over to pet his head he would flinch. I don't lead him by his collar, I attach a leash and do it that way. The previous owners also used a crate for punishment, so crating him was traumatic. So people are really stupid and abusive with animals and it's sad.

    Hey everyone! So I live in an apartment on the fifth floor. It's quite a long time for my dog to wait. I mean, he has to wait at the front door, then the elevator, then the outside door. And he needs to pee. My question is, should I start this technique at my main door? Or the last one before we leave the flat? I feel like he gets even more frustrated after as if he uses all the "good" energy and restrain at first and then freaks out after we walk a couple of steps outside. Because we live in a busy city, there's immediately A LOT of distraction for him: dogs, bikes, skateboards etc.

    • @iris7484
      @iris7484 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      every single door. I live in a not so busy city, but it's enough that I can't take the risk of my dog thinking she can bolt out of any door whatsoever. She has to wait at the door to the apartment and the door to the building, both. That would be my take, anyway. It seems that what Joel does is makes himself one of the "distractions," so to speak, only rather than a distraction, he is unpredictable enough (from the dog's perspective) with his stopping and starting that the dog _has_ to pay more attention to him than to any other distraction. A gentle leader can be really helpful with intensity/energetic dogs, too.

    You’re the best dog trainer and your methods helped coco see that I’m the parent and the leader. I recently adopted a pitbull (two days ago) who didn’t come from the best home. I really want her to pass the good canine citizen test just to show everyone that I disciplined her into being the perfect dog and the certificate is the proof. She’s 6 months, shy, under weight and barks at children, women, men and dogs when they come into sight. (If it the dog is next to her she’ll stop and shyly sniff them). The weird thing is when I turn around and tell her “shhhh no” and look at her in the eyes as I have my index finger in front of her nose. She cowers and backs away but then continues until they are gone. How can I improve my discipline? (I’m worried people will think I did this to her)? Is my dog fear reactive? Thank you for putting in the time to read my comment.
    Ps coco sometimes will be next to me or behind me during walks. Im not sure if this would correlate. I don’t really force her to be next to me because of her weight problem. I never let her be in front .

    • @athomehoustonbordercollier2035
      @athomehoustonbordercollier2035 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Someone alpha her kinda what your doing by demanding eye contact w finger in the face. Change all of that do redirection and identification. And let go of the good citizen class and test A she is not ready B fantasy take away from what's 2 feet in front of us. Later on do an obedience class and trick class if that goes well move forward

    • @cocothepittie7691
      @cocothepittie7691 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re advice has been helpful. I still want her to do the test but not till she’s done multiple classes. I wish I could sign her up for puppy classes right now. The old owners told me they don’t know if she’s vaccinated or microchipped. They just said that’s what the breeder said and didn’t ask for proof. I’m going to ask vet what to do for that. I’ve been so up tight about her meeting the criteria for the test because I refuse to become a negligent pit bull owner who’s known for their dog attacking other dogs or coco being perceived as harmful. But you’re wise about me just needing to focus on now and that would be getting vaccinated, neutered, chipped, and seeing if she’s got any health issues lastly redirect her (make her to do touch or sit). Plus! If you hadn’t said anything I’d mess her up more so Thank you.

    Great video as usual. Wondering if you have any advice for a dog that literally overnight has become scared of new people when he used to be very friendly. I bred him and he was one of the most confident puppies from the litter. Did Volhard testing on him and he was the most outgoing, laid back of his whole litter. Suddenly at 12 months he has started being terrified of new people. He flees them, doesn't want to be petted, and will almost run into walls to get away if he's surprised. Is this likely the "9 month" fear period that just started late? I'm totally at a loss to understand his change in personality.

    • @athomehoustonbordercollier2035

      @iris7484 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think this might have been addressed somewhere, sorry I can't be more helpful in locating but I think what you do is keep moving - towards the dog, around the dog , whatever - so that he can't get the leverage he needs to pull in the way that he wants to. (I think it might have been wit recentlyh the weimeraner? sorry I don't remember) but the point was that the correction is only a quick pop, not a pull, so if you see your husky is about to go into a battle of wills, change tack before he can plant his feet. That would be my guess based on having watched a lot of Joel's videos..
