How I Load My Mokai Boat On Top Of My Truck

  • In this video I show the rig I put together to load my Mokai motorized kayak onto the top of my truck. The wood platform was originally made by me to camp on top. I do not have to unload the boat and can keep the motor, gas, and gear inside of it. The kayak is too heavy for me to manually load it. Most everything in this video is rinky-dink, but it works perfect for me. I do not like to use my trailer when I go away on camping trips a long way from home. The "pulling it up the kayak slide" segment is long, but this is how it really is. I do have a rig with wheels to get it in the water much easier where there is a proper ramp. This is the cat's meow.

That's a great little rig. If you had a sleeve an pin at the base you could leave the base plate mounted, pull the pin and, lift off the crane and off you go. Thanks for sharing.

You have way more confidence in ratchet straps than I do. As a hunter of 48 years, I have had my share let me down. I have had a four wheeler fall out of my truck because the strap broke. Thank God it landed on the wheels in the middle of the road and no cars were behind me. Makes your heart skip a beat.

AquaChigger Definitely switch to synthetic rope for the winch. You can fit more on the reel, it would have virtually no snagging/injury issues in this scenario, and it tends to self-level during spooling. Also, places like Northern Tool have a number of these in which the body of the lift comes out of the mounting column with one hand tightened screw/bolt(like 52513). Use a Pear Link with some straps for a self-leveling style setup. Buy an NT remote winch setup(CP271) and just wire in the leads directly. You'll be able to use your remote battery and not have to change poles, plus you manage up/down from ground level.

I built Pylons, Jersey Barriers and Jail Cells at a Pre-stresed concrete plant. The pylons are 40' long and 3' wide. The forms hold four of them. A crew of five to six guys pulled the steel cable from one end to the other and clamped it off. Each end of the Pulons had a steel plate with eight holes-the cable was about 3x as thick as his Winch cable. They passed out Chintzy cotton gloves that got greasy, nasty and slippery so I did it without-yeah, the cable splinter suck. [[Pylons are driven vertically into the ground to support Hi-Rise buildings.]]

I've had one go through my glove, so it will ruin your day regardless if it gets up to such things. Generally speaking you want to avoid touching a braided wire with your hands if it's moving, use a different method like a rope with an arrestor or a capstan.

I wish I had seen this video before. I had a 14 foot Coleman canoe that I carried on the top of my full size Chevy Express van. I was able to tilt it up to the roof using a collapsible dolly but because the ends of the canoe came to a point, it was difficult. I eventually donated the canoe to a charity for kids because I was just getting too old!

    Mr Chigger,
I wish to thank you for sharing your time and experiences and adventures with us. If we were closer,I think I could fiberglass some lifting eyebolts or pad eyes of sort onto or into your boat hull, either recessed an rounded or just rounded so as to not b a snag or catch. Then rig a 3 or 4 point bridle with either small shackles or snap hooks to secure bridle to hull, with small d ring at center lift point. Snap crane hook on an go. Also,I saw one of the other posters mentioned synthetic soft line, its great and there's some that is just as strong as same diameter wire,it just doesn't handle chaffing real well. I'm a mariner, boat man, looks to me like you have it going on,I'm jus sharing with you,as you have with me,something thatd make life just a tad easier, quicker. I love your lil boat setup, and your adventures. I hope your possibles bag fills fast, fair winds and following seas to ya.cheers

    Mr. Chig,
Always like your videos. A suggestion, if you don't mind. On your crane base, weld a hinge onto the back side of the base and use wing nuts to secure it on the front side. Lift the crane into place and lock it down when needed, lay it down when traveling. Save a lot of time. Pull the hinge pin to remove and store the crane. Great job, by the way.

It ain't pretty but it works and that a whole heap better than a pretty thing that does not work! On a friends boat winch I replaced the wire rope with synthetic" plasma" rope and much nicer on hands. I made a cradle on wheels for the boat out of alloy and it winches up two tracks onto the roof rack. It locks down and stays secure. Makes moving boat a simple one person job. Wireless winch control a delight, and cheap!
Boat locks into cradle, secure. Cradle locks onto roof rack, secure. Job is a good one.

dropn loads, I bought one of those winches, and i have dragged a full size pickup with a flat tire on it, up onto a flatbed trailer with it.. It strained a little, but it got the job done..
And a bought a 2500lb Warn winch for my 4wheeler, and tried pulling a side by side out of the mud with it, and the Warn winch broke.. The head of those ATV Warn winches where you switch it to free spool, are made of plastic, and the big gear in the head, is plastic also.. So metal gears running on plastic gears doesn't work out very well.
So i now know to stay away from those ATV Warn winches. lol..

Nice to see a bit of functional engineering now and again. It ought to inspire fellow Mokai users that's for sure. I myself liked the wooden platform. What a nifty idea for camping. Nice setup but you should put you a hinge on the back side of your crane base with a pin with a cotter key on the front of the base then you could pull the cotter key and lay it back on top. But im sure you have thought of something like that. But i love the setup.

I have a couple suggestions for you. First off safety of course. Whenever handling steel cable please wear gloves as others have commented on. Also if you design your own color code you can use spray paint or even different colored electrical tape at specific increments on your cable so no matter how far away from your rig you’ll know approx how much cable you have out follow? For instance yellow starts at 20 feet left at every 5 feet until 10 feet left then a red stripe every foot to the spool. Sounds complicated but it’s really helpful and you’ll always know without having to be on top of your truck! Anyway great video thanks for sharing.

I love ingenuity, good job. Be careful tightening the ratchet straps around the transom area, that hull model has a design flaw that causes cracks around the pump mounting area and inside the intake tunnel. You will take on water as a result as well as cavitation which causes increased engine rpm and lower speeds.

My idea for the bottom tube is weld a short tube to the plate that is just small enough for the main tube to fit over. Drill a hole about 6" up through both tubes and insert a pin in the hole long enough to go through both tubes. Think of the receiver of a Reese hitch and how the square tubes fit inside each other and the keeper pin is inserted. Strong enough to pull a large trailer! Don't think a Mokai would be any trouble!

  • @jollywingo4271

Would be quicker an you could do it 1 handed if needed but hey whatever works right!!! We use same set up on our tv trucks at work for lowering 150 pound. Cameras into manhole to inspect pipe......by the way first civil war buttons I found cleaning a sewer pipe , the crown of the pipe had collapsed an allowed whatever was above it to fall into the pipe an I retrieved it, that an about $100 bucks in buffalo nickals , standing liberty quarters an can tell you how many mercury dimes .... all that got me interested in metal detecting! Hi would it be a good idea to put an old magnet on the bottom of the crain to put the nuts on while you're undoing them they would not fall of keep hunting love the videos Ann

Mr chiggs if you know someone who could do it for you you should get them to put a pivot on the bottom so all you have to do is pull a pin out and just lay the whole crane upright down save all the work of takin it all to bits lol

You could get a big hinge, mount it with the nail side facing towards the middle of the truck. That way you can just fold the crane down. Also considering how beefed up that crane is and the boat it's lifting, I wouldn't' rely on just 2 bolts. If the crane suddenly changed direction with the load on it, it could snap the bolts.

The Chigg-Rig is awesome. Been looking for a similar solution for my 12' kayak.. may steal and modify your setup.

You could bolt a smaller, old metal box of some kind and put a magnetic strip inside for those bolts. That way you can take them right off and drop them inside and the magnet would prevent annoying rattling.
Edit: never mind, I see several similar comments...

Suggestion, weld or have someone weld tabs on the mounting nuts and turn the nuts into wing nuts. Maybe you can find them ready made at a hardware store or a specialty store that deals in nuts and bolts.
