I think the angle they chose isn't good to show it, but you can tell from how they drive into angle that they're past 90 on initiation. these dudes are definitely capable enough to follow the name of the comp
angle showed nicely and was multiple of them but has nothing to do with it. most drifts were just regular initiations, was not many backies at all (back tires in front of you not beside or else your just drifting) you can tell when they did it right cuz there trajectory will be different than a regular drift. And yes there capable of following the name of the comp but that dont mean they cant suck at backies. i watch people do them all the time irl and on youtube i know what im talking about and how to do them. All in all Formula drift usa is just loosing itself everyday trying to milk whatever they can out of it before people start realizing, japan should just take drifting back over and make it real again@@TheOtherPlayer
I can appreciate FD trying new things, shakes up the norm. It would be awesome to see a form of freestyle competition along with the usual competition rounds, it could be an exciting addition to the series.
Luke Fink would be the backie king then now and probably forever. The guy is on another level. James Dean and Chelsea denofa come close but just miss that little bit of flare that Luke has
I feel like all three of those guys would put on a good show. Add Naoki and Julian from Animal Style... I'd pay to see it. And whoever else can throw it to 110. Only a couple people in this event did it barely to 90. You can make up excuses on bad corner or whatever but any of those guys we listed would have gone big.
Ngl Ik Adam is a fanboy drifter but I feel he would do pretty good in this event especially with the mustang that man may drive like a physco but he can whip nasty entries with the mustang
Still funny seeing Masuyama's US car there as a loaner. Absolute chad drove through the night to bring it to the event. He's really chill too. Theres a reason he's one of my favorite drivers in FD. You can always trust Hibino to throw his car in hard, he's got some wild style.
I was so happy to see these retired legends back in the car. also I did not expect them to bring RSR Supra and Apexi RX7 back, like damn, thats my childhood right there. imo, Apexi rx7 is still the best looking rx7
Hell yeah! i second this! They would just about throw a car away to show some spice and get backwards for the audience. These guys seems mostly unprepared. sounded like they didnt really get much time with the run and just kinda fell flat bc of that. Also, the camera angles were not the best. cant really see the cars angle bc of that.

Blegh, those 1000HP hyper-drift car machines would just make it worse for the fans who only wants to see just friendly-drifting. And take all the shine from those legendary RX7 and Supra.
They need to move the start WAY more back to do BACKIES! Where they start is where they need to be in high motion already. - sick to see all the legends tho! Chicken Skin. 🤘
I feel like FD could really use some more old school Hoongan "ain't care' vibes. Less rules, more passion. I've seen local drift days with more intense backies than this. Love the event, keep it going. Just want some real reverse entries lol
No, actually taking attention away from the thing that literally employs people and lets them live their dreams is actually a bad idea. There is a time and place for ancillary activities and we actually have done a lot of them: RSR, Turn 14 project of the same ilk, Nitto Day, SEMAFEST are all things we have constructed, 5 seasons of drifting development in Qatar, the first to ever drift Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, the only Asian Championship that was broadcast on national television for 7 years, Formula DRIFT Asia....I think we do more than just the Series, but if you are talking about what moves the actual needle, it's building FD just like you would build something like the NFL Supercross or MLB. Homerun Derby contests and Big Air comps are cool; Passing exhibitions have their place, but they are not the foundation or what actually creates an industry, especially not at this early stage of only 20 years. @@mintyCS
Backie contents should be a regular thing for Formula D! BTW nobody mentioned what would happen if you brought on our boi Travis Pastrana as he's the king of backies - I mean the name of the car is called the "Huckster" LOL
It was just the wrong corner for this comp, the last turn at the end with u turn shape would have been perfect. The cam angle wasn't good to show the angle thrown either but love the idea
Backie is a way cooler term and it was what we would have liked to see. Obviously, commenters know much more about drifting than the drivers, but that's the point; once you get an online account you become an expert in everything. That's the cool part.
@@formuladrift hey man I've got a Reddit account and too much spare time, I am an expert! Joking aside I think this sort of format is good, it's always been a blast virtually, gives an opportunity for style to come through and negates car advantage on a reasonable layout.
Luke Fink yer those that know, know that is one bloke that would love to be in this competition and just give him an AU Falcon or a Holden Commodore that's all he would need 🤣🤙🇦🇺
Because the event was constructed by RSR and they wanted old Japanese stars and modern FD guys who could transport together their cars from a singular location.
Orido back with the OG RSR Supra and cowboy hat and flame racing suit. It's like bringing back an old WWF guy into the ring. lmfao amazing ~ Disappointed in these "backies"
Hibino is really really such a dope drifter! I do wonder why Chelsea wasn't here - I know he stepped out for a bit but isn't he like the biggest backwards entry type bro? :D Either way cool vid!!! Thanks.
They should have just had people lapping the track with some judges sat on the corner watching. It doesn't have to be so serious. It sucks all the fun out of it.
Sorry but any Suzuka Twin fan knows that placing the start box at the start of the straight is crap for backies. This course calls for a running start up the straight. Thats how yall will find the “impactful” entry youre looking for
I get it, formula drift judges think you can't follow a car doing backies in comp. I think some tracks have a first corner where the lead car should be able to throw a backie (for extra style points or whatever you guys score these days) and the rest of the track be drifted as "normal". Nothing gets the fans as hyped as backies and imagine if the chase car was able to mimic on that first corner. If you guys can find a way to incorporate them into your "rules", it would only gain FD's popularity (I might even subscribe and start watching again lol).
Flick does not equal backie. Asbo's first run had zero backie (if your car does not go over 90 degrees to the wall, not a backie). If you do not do a backie, you should not get a score over 50.
I appreciate the effort FD, despite other negative comments. Even my comment seems negative, I just was drifting to become bigger. Closer door to door runs (not setting up rules that discourage tapping the lead driver) and backies are definitely the move. And I realize I am talking to the void and probably looks cringe lol.
Is this really serious? Did the legendary IMAMURA completing the route score fewer points than those who rode it or didn't even complete it? I hope it's just a joke
First of its kind! A backie comp, with absolutely no backies! Amazing!

It's also the fact that half of the cars are from like 20 years ago before backies were even a thing and their setups reflect that

Masato Kawabata the goat

I think the camera that was facing the cars is the only one that shows the backies well
All of them didn't even do big backies only odi did one but a small one so they ahould get the grassroots guys in Japan. THose guys can huck
The was Only 2 big bakies. And the wernt even big
James deane can do better angles in his vlogs
Very agreeable comment here, should be on right side of track for good angle or drone cam.

Back when D1 cars were street legal ehhehe
Finaly!!! Starting to see trick comps. Will be good to see this one in the future when more tricksters are in the comp.

Should have saved time and just let Chelsea, Luke and James throw down
I like the approach to doing something new in comp like this
Hopefully next time this comp runs they do some backies

Cool idea. They threw some decent angle. But I'm not sure I saw one Backie...
Needs the king of backies....LUKE FINK!!!
Imamura-San's FD Livery looks absolutely cool

Bring the backie comp to Australia. Blokes with $10k cars will show you how it’s done
If only Kawabata-san was here...
I wish the fd rx7 would’ve reversed entry too 🔥
The tighter turn and better camera angles next time, I also would prefer this freestyle stuff more than the usual FD judging and setup.
taniguchi holds the best backie record in his blue 180sx
