Back in the fall of 1995 through the spring if 1996 I used to watch this over and over and over 8-11 hours a day. I worked at SCOT Industries as a CNC saw operator cutting tubing, chrome rod and tie rod stock for orders and did manual machining in the job shop as well. Watching those big hone machines running endlessly was mesmerizing.
And every once in a while they would catch fire lol.
The cutting fluid was one of the secrets to their impecable hone job, that and the machines which were made by SCOT up in Muscoda, WI. The fluid was made in house and was a combination of hog fat and diesel fuel. The entire place smelled like a donut fryer that was a little "off." I still pass by the Sugar Grove plant on my way to my gun club every weekend.

for the most part of the last 13 years that I worked I ran hones. They ranged from 1.5 inch dia. to 54 in dia. bores up to 40 feet long.

Someone gave me a small old Sunnen hone they had laying around think from a business they own.. I think some parts are missing but it looks to be mostly operational.. Only thing is I'd like to see what it can do but not sure how to properly set it up.. You know of any place on the net that can guide the setup and maybe have some bores for sale, cause it definitely missing those parts..

MEMORIES !!! I used to use one of those all day back in the early 70's when I was an apprentice - can you still get the stones for them ???

+The Mad Man Yessir Sunnen still sells all the parts, the stones are pretty standard.

I was in the engine rebuild trade and used one of those (with a big assed drill machine) to hone out the bores after a re bore job - and when you send it down too far you hit the main bearing webs in the block.
Then 4 things happened - the block goes one way, the drill the other way, you land on your face in the honing fluid catch pan and when you get up your journeyman gives you a flat hand to the back of the head and you have a headache until next week.
It really makes me sad that talented people in the engineering trade are becoming more and more rare so it gives an old retired guy like myself so happy that there are still younger guys like yourself still around - keep it up please.
And by the way, since your shop has really started to come together you seem to be a much happier person.

Hey boss. Just wondering if that is dirty car oil or it just got that dirty from use. Just curious. Love the videos. I am working my way thru them all.

Does the thin cylinder go oval where it's clamped? Been following your thread on PM for a couple years.

Just noticed the three visible extinguishers. Is fire a major hazard with this operation?
Sorry if these are simplistic questions. I am not a machinist myself. Love the vids.

Mathew Haight yeah honing can start fires. Why the coolant is so important. this looks like low pressure maybe finish honing, but when trying to pull heavy stock out with higher pressure/rpm gotta have CO2 extinguisher on the ready. this hone is tiny compared to the machines at SCOT ind. looks like the pipe clamp can't be clamped too tight also due to design or would warp mtl as it heats up. so putting more pressure/rpm could cause it to slip. still neat to see different types of honing machines.

how can you set the tool to size ? and how do you know if your done

what are the benefits of a fast cross hatch? This looks like you are feeding around 3" per revolution of the hone. Wouldn't a slower feed make a smoother finish, which would seal better? Thanks

You want a slower rotation with a faster stroke. This obtains the best crosshatching which is ideal for inner cylinder bores allowing for better sealing and longer seal life.

Question: When you hone like that, are you doing it just for a few minutes and not taking much off? Does honing take off thickness (increase diameter of the bore?) or does it just create a smooth edge? How do you know when you are done?

    • @johnathanandrus5060
      @johnathanandrus5060 6 ปีที่แล้ว

kg6tgr yes this looks like finishing or tight tolerance honing, but there is also stock removal involved, you can't remove defects without removing stock. so say he's removing .010"-
.020" and has a tight tolerance of .002"-.003" you use finer/finishing stones or sand paper to get correct surface roughness. When removing heavy stock say .200" you use cutting stones maybe w diamond inlay and turn the tube throughout the process to keep concentricity and as you get closer to final size/tolerance switch to finishing stones since cutting stones leave tube very rough, checking regularly with dial bore gauges or I.d. micrometers to monitor production.
