I tried editing and uploading this video five different ways but UMG kept blocking it. So I got annoyed and let TH-cam mute the song. That's why it's all weird around 7:30. Also, I admit I did a bad job in the end and kind of combined the Waitin for the Night and And Now The Runaways albums into one section. I should've detailed that a bit more. I blame being sick.
My introduction to The Runaways was the movie that came out in 2010 with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. It's been a (very) long time since I've seen it, but before that I knew next to nothing about the band. I consider them to be an important group, especially within the LA Punk scene. With that said, though, It's a really sad story. These girls were failed time and time again by the adults that were supposed to protect and care for them. And what makes it even worse is that they couldn't do that for themselves. This is a great video, as always. Keep up the good work. P.S. Get well soon!
@@soundofhistory_ At least once, yes. The movie itself is ok. It kind of serves as a general overview of The Runaways story without getting into too much of the disturbing parts of it (at least from what I remember). It's based on Cherie's Memoir, "Neon Angel." So, much of it is from her perspective. In fact, she and Joan Jett have the most screentime in the movie. So, be prepared for that. Also, they had to write a character for Jackie Fox, since she didn't want to release the rights to her likeness, which I don't blame her given all she's been through in her time with the band. All that said, I think it's something worth checking out just to see. P.S. You're welcome!
I read both books about The Runaways including Cherie Currie's. I just have to wonder what their parents were thinking, especially when Cherie's parents knew she was living with the 26 year old band manager named Scot. (forgot his last name)
Jackie joined last---there were two other bass players between she and Micki Steele, the most well-known of whom was Peggy Foster. That's her with the other girls at 10:00.
I think people who were born much later dont know how bad it was for women in the 70s. A UK talk show used to bring up the topic of "are women equal to men" all the time. There quite a few men especially in the US seem to want to take us back to those times. Also, In 2014 it is an adult's responsibility as it was in the 70s to look after children. Nobody should have been exploiting them. Nobody!
Thank you so much for this! I was just a couple of years younger than them. I'm just now studying a lot of famous people. I missed out on the details bc I was out in the bar partying every night & didn't watch TV or read magazines then. This was extremely interesting to me.
Thank you for this episode!!! I am a new subscriber - really enjoy this channel. I remedmber seeing them live and being suoer impressed. The rock scene in the 7os was a very different time - crazy fun amazing and very scary. Glad I experienced it but would never go back. ☮️
The Runaways were born in 1958 and 1959. The band started in late 1974 so they were 16 and 17 in 1975 when they started touring, not 14 or 15. People always try to make them younger than they were even though they really young at 16 and 17, touring the world while their peers were still in high school.
I had the hots for all of The Runaways! 🔥❤️ Not being a pervert, they were all 5+ years older than me. Joan - 1958 Lita - 1958 Sandy - 1959 Cherie - 1959 Jackie - 1959 Me - 1967
@19:02 you say, "It's worth noting that Joan and Cherie don't exactly agree with Jackie's version of those events," to which I would add it's worth noting they apparently don't agree with Kari Chrome's version either.
There was a news article maybe a year ago that Kari Krome was suing the estate of Kim Fowley seeking reparations for work she did - lyrics to Cherry Bomb or portions of it - and she was not paid. How did this turn out?
What the runaways had was phenomenal. I only learned about them from about two years now. I was very young when they started. It was a shock when I learned that Joanne and Lita were in a band together back in the 70s, because I recognise them from their solo projects over the decades. Love them . Shame they won’t do a reunion, but i think that is down to Lita
Cherie Currie just played all the Runaway’s songs with a band in Semi Valley at a park. At Family Jams a Charles Manson music festival. They have ever year in August.
Bought that first album back in late '76 when I was 13. Didn't know much about them but I had read some good stuff in Rock Scene so thought I'd give them a try. Thought it was a great album, up there with my new favorite band at the time, The Ramones. And yes, we all hate Kim Fowley.
I first heard of Kim Fowley when he was co-writing songs with Skip Battin in the early 1970s while Battin was with the Byrds. I take it that the lyrics were Fowley's department, as Battin's singing was always mixed (usually) below the level of the guitars on those tracks. Battin was a very proficient player. I started learning how much of a creep he was in the mid-to-late 1990s.
If you don't like listening to the RUNAWAYS there IS something inherently wrong with you! And it's not simple and fun! It's complex and not fun at all!!
@@LRCw32 It's not inherently bad, music, but I am pointing out the bad juju around band. Plus, I am way more into queercore bands along with the Insaints, Bikini Kill, Patti Smith, L7, etc. And, my fave artist of all time is Joan Baez.
Jackie wasn’t playing on their first because of Kim.The *ape occurred within a month of her joining the band. She had been drugged before the event took place. Kim knew he had stepped over the line with what he did to Jackie so he claimed she wasn’t ready to play on the album when he really didn’t want to have to face her. The others have their versions of what happened of course. It’s sad that they didn’t step in but they were young and probably didn’t know how to deal with it. And, of course, they were probably pretty out of it themselves. The version of Jackie not being allowed to play on the first album came from Jackie herself.
Foley was a Bad Un but what about all the hundreds or thousands of sweaty blokes at least 5 years older gawping at them ? These were 1970s rock & metal fans after all & i bet half of them weren’t expecting Steve Hackett dexterity from the guitarist & didn’t care . As Frank Z would say “ nasty nasty nasty…”
Joan sang more than half the songs on their first album and second album. Her vocals were better than Cherie from day one. Cherie was hired to be the front person and be the one with platinum blonde hair and wear corsets and fishnet stockings...something Joan was never going to do. Best thing that could have happened was Cherie leaving. Unfortunately, Lita and Sandy wanted to try to be a metal band and Joan did not....this is what broke up the band ultimately. History now tells us that Joan was going in the right direction and that Lita and Sandy were not. Joan Jett's vocals fit the Runaways music better than Cherie's and her vocals have obviously worked great during her whole solo career. Lita's career after the Runaways is clear proof that Lita was wrong. Lita has never been able to put together enough good material to record popular records.

The Runaways are profoundly underappreciated, they were and will always be teen angst personified.
They were a tremendous band for sure.
Kids were a lot tougher back then

The Runaways were the best female band ever. I'm a JETTHEAD through & through🖤
Sandy West was so pretty and a great drummer too!
I loved there music 🎶
Have done a Riot Grrrls video yet? The Suzi Quatro connection makes so much sense.
Joan produced The Germs first album
Not yet but definitely on the list
Fowley was closer to 40 when he ‘created’ the Runaways, and maybe even creepier than Malcomb McLaren with Bow Wow Wow.

@@DukeHalliday-cv4fx Laurie later partnered with Kim Fowley, of all people. Her group The Orchids was really great, but nobody knows them.
