    I mix primarily on my two sets of in ear plugs. One is a Samsung set the other is Huawei. One has more low end than the other. If I am happy with those then I take the mix to the other 3 systems around my house. I then play the mix through my main system and walk around the outside of my house to see if I feel the mix 😁 Only then am I completely happy. Bit of a pain but it works for me

    Years ago I had a small studio in Sacramento where I recorded and mixed singers using tracks. My go to mixing speakers were small set of inexpensive PC computer speakers and my singers loved how they sounded on their recordings. A couple guys went to Nashville and paid a lot of money. They came back extremely disappointed in their product saying my mixes were amazing in comparison. Just more proof.. trust your ear... and your cheap speakers!

    Since I’ve bought expensive Genelec 8340 monitors, I need much less fixes after first mix, even when checking on different headphones and systems. Before I mixed on KRK Rokit 6 and my mixes were pretty successful too, but I needed much more edits after checking it in earbuds. Another thing that helps me is checking mix with EarPods while walking around the city. It brings new perspective which is different from the studio.

After awhile with lots of experience you will know before the car test or whatever how your mix will translate. You can mix on anything . Yoy just gotta know it like tge back of your hand .that said a well treated room.should be your 1st goal if you can.

    Over the years I’ve found myself having to listen on different playback systems less and less. I think this basically comes down to the fact that I’ve used the same pair of Mackie 824’s as my monitors for about a million years so I can usually get in the ballpark with the minimum of fuss. I used to check mixes on many systems but I’ve found the new slate VMX headphones to be a massive time saver.
    Also: make it sound good on the worst system you can find. It’ll usually sound decent on most other systems then. Usually...

    • @oinkooink
      @oinkooink 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, so making it sound great on Avantone Mixcubes or something will see me boosting crazy amounts of high and low...and my mixes will suck. So, that's not the answer.

  • @Sadlander2

    I keep hearing that you should NOT mix on headphones. I also hear all the time that it's very important to be familiar, to know your speakers. Well...in my case, I always listen to music with headphones with the exception of when I'm in my car. So, wouldn't it make sense to mix with what I use to listen to music all the time?

      then listen to music all the time on your monitors or whatever you use to mix.

    • @LittleCrkt
      @LittleCrkt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I would go as far as to say it's even more important how your FANS listen to your music. At the end of the day, the ideal is to check your mix on as many types of speakers you think your music will be played on, and if earbuds are included in that, go for it!

    • @MattDxstined
      @MattDxstined 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LittleCrkt the difference is you're glamorising *checking your mix* on many different speakers, not realising he was talking about doing the actual mix on random headphones. obviously you should check your mix on different speakers but what you shouldn't do is mix on random headphones just because you're used to them. it doesn't hide the fact that you're not hearing the details in your mix or problem spots.

    • @LittleCrkt
      @LittleCrkt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattDxstined I don't see the reason to make a distinction between mixing and checking in this case. It's all part of the same process. Your music ends up where the fans decide to play it at the end of the day.
      What's important here is that you consider the kind of speakers those fans are most likely to use. Mix, check, whatever. Just make sure the music sounds good on the fans' speakers, and then check as many other types of speakers as you have access to to ensure translatability.

    Nothing I've tried works. Sometimes I mix something passable. Mostly my mixes are a nightmare. 3x4m room. Yamaha HS8, Mixcubes, multiple headphones including HD600, dt880 etc. I have DIY & some Primeacoustic room treatment. Just terrible, terrible mix translation. Even beyond the acoustic issues my room has there's something fundamentally wrong about my entire approach I suspect. There's something I just don't get. Incredibly frustrating.

      Same here. What helped was doing less. My raw vocals sounded always better than my final mixed vocals.. I noticed that I had like 10 EQs on them and this destroyed them. Now I just do 1-3 EQs. And also I try to mix in the car too. Get my laptop and connect via bluetooth. Helps alot. But referencing to other songs helps too... My mixes are still not perfect.. need to visit a prof. studio...
