    Those men who make the drums in Trinidad are truly talented. As a musician and a tinkerer, I have always had a ton of respect for them. The early pan-makers made their drums out of old oil barrels, and they often had to go digging in scrapyards for a long time to find a good one. It's truly amazing that the craftsmen were able to make such nice instruments from such primitive materials AND to pass-on their technique to future generations. They must be very cool guys! If I ever got the chance, I would love to own a set of pans!

    • @chaoticustt
      @chaoticustt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Brandon Veracka Nothing has changed we still have problems getting raw material to make pans.Sometimes you purchase the drums supplied by pan trinbago for $500 and not get good tonal quality,so most makers/tuners try locating the discarded drums for less money and get better tonal quality pans,sad to say.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      chaoticustt That's a shame. The steel pans/pan drums are so unique and just so cool; from their sound to the way they're made. I've always told myself that if I ever come across a real nice one or a pair I'd buy 'em.
      It's a real shame that quality 55gal drums are so hard to come by for the makers. These days I suppose there are less of them than there were 10-20 years ago. My family has always worked in the motorcycle industry, and I remember as a kid in the `90s I used to see TONS of spent oil drums in the corners and out back of our repair bays. Nowadays I hardly see any. It must have something to do with the industry itself; maybe they're just not using 55gal drums as much anymore--probably not cost-effective. It's too bad, because the oil they contained actually helped preserve the metal.
      It really bums me out that so many great crafts like drum pan making are on a downward trend. Especially in a world where in music you can just synthesize almost sound you can dream of, the real instruments--not just pans but lots of 'specialty' instruments--are quickly fading into obscurity. Even well-made popular instruments like guitars, basses, and drumkits' quality is going down the tubes due to mass-production and cheap materials; a real shame. I'm glad that some people are trying to keep these techniques & trades alive though!

    • @chaoticustt
      @chaoticustt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Brandon Veracka One word "plastic".There are lots of 55gal drums available but not what we would use to make quality sounding instrument.They are like 22 gauge and higher when we look for 18 gauge.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      chaoticustt Ah, that's right! I totally forgot about plastic having taken over; it's obviously cheaper so that's why it did. For a pan-maker I imagine finding a *good* 55gal steel drum is tough, and can be expensive if you're buying new ones.
