    For what it’s worth, you don’t have to be young to not enjoy the loud-amp-in-the-room experience. I’m older than Lee, and I’ve never enjoyed it. I’ve been really happy that technology has been able to get me the sound I want live. And, really, it was good enough for me in the nineties. What the tech can do today is more than I’d dreamed. I play a hybrid rig with a HX Stomp and Synergy amps + cab, sometimes switching out the preamp for a variation. It's awesome and letting that thing roar at rehearsals and gigs is a really nice experience.
    I do think something like a QC is the best option for effects. For amps I still love having something that gets hot, has physical knobs that I can twist blindly, a satisfying switch to turn on, with tubes and transformers that tick as it cools down when you turn it off. Even if you give me an FRFR setup that *sounds* identical, it cannot give you that.

    I’ve used a modeler into xlr/in ears but split the signal before the IR block and use a power amp into a proper cab.

    there are so many awesome possibilities with such a rig. I dont have a rig like THIS but I'm experimenting with signal splitting/ reamping from my DAW into amps. Having different IRs and effects to add at certain moments in a song combined with having the possibility to mic it up and blend everything is really, really awesome, overkill but awesome. :D

But really looking forward to plug in compatibility as i own 4 at the moment. Although enjoying what you play in what ever set up you use is the most important, there is no right or wrong way.

    I have a Katana-Artist (bought when first released) and a Katana 50 MKII EX for my home (both bought based on your recommendations) and I love them. I can't crank either of them because the entire subdivision I live in would riot (I get away with playing the US national anthem on the back patio on July 4th each year with my Artist cranked--I have been told by friends that they have heard it from 1 mile away). But I can also put on my headphones and jam without getting a visit from Officer Friendly for disturbing the peace. (After all that is my primary use and need.) For me, all the tone variations and drive permutations I want or need are there. I'm 70 and my gigging days are mostly over, so this suits my needs. Of course, in the hands of an accomplished shred monster like Bea, playing venues with widely varying sound characteristics, the hybrid is the perfect solution to highlight his playing strengths. Imagine the "de-engineering" required to make this rig your permanent bedroom/headphones chain.
    Hope some of that makes sense. As always, it is great to see you mates working and brainstorming together. Thanks for the rundown. We mere mortals all benefit from your fountains of knowledge and experience. Cheers.

    I'm doing a similar hybrid setup with my band. A Pod Go with 4CM into a Marshall DSL40. For cleans, I use a preamp model of a Fender Twin from the Pod, using the power section of the Marshall. For crunch, the classic channel of the Marshall. For dirty, the lead channel of the Marshall. The Pod switches it all and provides effects, a lead boost, and a DI out with cab sim to FOH. A great best of both worlds.
    At rehersal, or smaller venues, I'll run the Pod into the effects return of an old Fender Mustang III. It has a 12" 100W Celestion speaker, so it's a proper powered guitar cab, not FRFR for that proper amp feel. Much simpler and lighter to run though.
    In both cases, if the amp or Pod fails, I can fall back on the other part of the rig and finish a set. It's a great way to go!

    I played a gig this summer where the other guitarist cancelled, so used two amps but in fron of one i had the tape delay on 100% mix, 0 feedback and the shortest possible delay time. Just had to dial the wow and flutter in until it sounded natural and it worked like charm. A few milliseconds of delay, both volume and pitch where wobbeling a bit and the high end was rolled of a bit which added to make it sound like 2 different guitars. Probably the most "realistic" fake double i've used (although I haven't used a lot of them) but i highly recommend for anyone who needs to make yourself sound like 2 guitarists (you could probably use most tape delay pedals, not just the QC but I've never tried it with a different pedal)

I use the fm3 for all my other effects (delay reverb compression ambient sounds ect) and it's also my midi channel switcher. I've played a couple gigs already where I needed the power of that revv and a 4x12, the fm3 eliminates so much hassle and the effects sounds so damn good.

    Totally with him on needing the roar of the amp live. It's what makes playing live fun. In ear monitors through a modeler it's like I"m just practicing in my room at home. I think the sound of a real tube amp through a real cabinet sounds the best too. SOunds big and fat . Again it's what makes playing live with a real band fun.

  • @thebedroomguitarist91

    I've recently converted to modellers after 15 years of dancing around a pedal board and I'm on both sides of the digital vs valve as i agree with what lee says getting familiar with the quad takes time and it kind of feels like you need to have a PHD to use the thing but after playing and some simple fiddling you can get a decent tone, yes it is easier to just turn an amp on and plug a pedal board in and get the tone you want but you're restricted to that tone.
    The beauty of a modeller is you've got everything you want in one unit, you won't take up a lot of space on stage and have options as to how you output the tone versus taking up space on stage that most venues don't have especially if you're playing pub gigs, thousands of pounds of pedals and lugging in a lot of equipment.
    The old school will need to embrace the new school just like we have had to do with electric cars and combustion engines.

      Man- I learned to use a Headrush modeler without ever reading even one line from a manual or PDF file. It's bone head simple- touch screen, drag and drop interface- if you can use a computer, you can use the Headrush MX5 without ever reading anything. And I'm 52 years old and grew up playing a 50watt Plexi. I even figured out how to put 3rd party IRs on it without reading the how to- it's no different than connecting a flash drive and using it. And I mean that literally- it shows up as a flash drive on your computer and you interact with it like you do any other flash drive. And there's no way- and I'm saying this after playing real amps for over 30 years and only using a modeler for 9 months- that it's faster or simpler to dial in a tone using a real amp and an analogue pedal board. No way that's true- not even on day one of owning the thing. Not having to physically move around gear and cabling, being able to add fx anywhere in the chain- including after the cab if you want- just like in studio- makes all the difference in the world. For instance, if I end up with some anomaly in the tone- I don't have to go search for which two parameters on what two pedals aren't playing well together- I can just add a parametric eq right before the IR and fix it. I can also change IR's which is the same as changing the room tone, mic choices, and/or mic placements- think of how long that would take to actually do.

    • @Eric-dd8bk
      @Eric-dd8bk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Plus, the audience is never hearing the tone you intended cuz you are dependent on the sound guy for the tone that goes to the audience with an analog set up.
      You are at the mercy of the level or the lack there of the sound guy's mixing abilities, and you are ganna sound different every gig from a sound guy to the next and so on.
      Not the case with modelers.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Eric-dd8bk The same sound guy takes the output from your modeler and mixes it with the rest of the band using the same console he would if he miced you up so- not sure how you think it's that different really. You get to choose your own mics and placements but- most sound guys will let you do that same thing with your analogue rig. You just bring your own mics and set them up yourself- they're happy to let you do it. They're not going to let you mess with the board but that's the same with your modeler- once you hand them the output, they eq it and mix it as they see fit.

    What I’ve been doing, and it is brilliantly efficient.
    * Helix (no amp modeling) into Deluxe Reverb ToneMaster
    * XLR out from ToneMaster to PA
    * if its an in ears gig, the ToneMaster is silent. No stage volume
    * if its a stage volume gig, the ToneMaster provides stage volume along with whatever wedges are being used, etc.
    Dead simple. Easy to maintain. Easy to replace in emergency. Easy to replicate on the road with an SM57 and a valve deluxe.

    I would be very helpul and addictive to see the actual routings as pro level graph. For example when they are talking about particular routing aspect of the rig the graph would briefly pop up with focus marked.Then the video would serve as a knowledge base that the customer can return to again and again. You can double the added value by doubling the effort so the cost is not a big deal. Having made it happen once the graphing user case is ready for any setup.

    i personally use only the Quad Cortex with my Band Live. For the Oomph that you get from a Real Cab i have a Headrush 112 on stage pointing at the audience with an EQed signal that delivers the low mids, every time i talk to people after a gig they tell me how much they enjoy that they still get the oomph from the stage. while having the sound from the PA. Works really well for me and my Band. The Other Guitar Player does the Same with a Kemper, one to FOH one EQed to a stage monitor pointing to the audeience for the Oomph 👌 we both really do not wanna carry around those huge tube amps and cabs and rather be set up in 20 minutes with walkting to the bus only once. We rather help the Drummer set up his kit 👌I knoiw it'S not "the same" but it works great for us.

    Love seeing rabea in the videos. Just seems like such a good guy.
    The biggest problem i have with the digital processors is that there may be 100 amps available on a given modeler but the names dont match up and you spend forever trying to figure out what the name on the modeler matches the name of the amp you want. The same problem goes for the pedals you want. You almost need a degree on the names of the items. It gets to a point where there are so many options that it becomes prohibitive to want to use it.

    If you have a Cubase Elements,ToneX profiler, Marshall DSL100 and a sound card like RME Raydat connected to simple Behringer 8 channel 8200 ADATs you can do absolutely any routing. So it would be like taking ToneX models to DSL power section as well taking the preamp of DSL to ToneX cabinet IRs. You can profile preamp section or with power section or with cab and mic for the IRs. After you win in lottery you can also use Neural Cortex or Kemper but you already know what to do with them when learned the system with cheaper ToneX. But I recommend to use a sound card having proper simple routing what RME offers. Unlimited routing inside PC with RME Raydat is really the game changer. I don't know about other pro stuff but that RME Raydat has been the best thing I've ever invested in because of the consistent and crashless and totally limitless routing possibilities.

    I feel like the idea of preference is a very important point. People get stuck in their heads that an amp sounds better than a modeler or profiler when in reality that isn’t the question. It’s where are you playing? What’s your preference? You want stage volume? Or are you just running in ears? If you’re just running in ears and your amps would be in an isolation cab off stage, you’d get a more consistent sound using a modeler or profiler. If you are playing on stage with your amp and you prefer that, then do that. An even bigger point is, what a great time to be a damn guitar player. Haha

    I get the modelling (or profiling thing) but as they would say at TPS: real amplifiers just sound better. Even at larger concerts (6K, 17K, or even 60K outdoors) it JUST sounds better with real amps. I especially noticed that with The National, who I had previously seen with amplifiers but who switched to QC's. Just didnt feel the same.

    Not sure the info at 26:50 is correct? The amp MODEL would include the entirety of the AC30 (pre-amp and power amp sections). When you run that model into an FX return on the Kraken, you are effectively hitting another layer of power amp coloring to the tone. In this case an EL84 model blending with 6L6. However, you can capture a snapshot of an FX loop out (pre-amp only) and pair it with the real amps power section. The QC has some power section captures and pre amp captures to sort of break the amps apart if thats desired. But I’m not so sure Rabea is correct in saying that Vox model was “pre-amp only” routing into the Kraken. That said - Ive experimented with this and I don’t think it sounds bad disabling cab blocks and running the models into the amp FX return. Would love for someone to comment on this and sanity check my logic here!!

  • @rhythmguru1
    @rhythmguru1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Listening to this conversation, I'm curious why someone like Victory or another amp brand hasn't come up with a fairly lightweight simple "tube power amp" combo with a 12" speaker that would do this. You can run your own pre-amp, which could be QC or HX modelling or even something like the UAFX amps or even a tube pre-amp if you wanted like the kingsley stuff. This is kind of what the tonemaster speakers were doing, but those don't seem to have the true amp feel. Seems like a missing portion of the segment between what is available from a FRFR versus a true amp/cab. If you are bypassing the pre-amp anyway, just get rid of it.

    Eventually, some company will come out with a program on computer and then in a pedal or rack, where you can “build your own amplifier”.
    You’ll have choices for resistors and transistors and tubes and caps and filters and you’ll be able to “solder” them anywhere in the circuit. Probably will have a virtual breadboard to start off with, and you build from there.
    You’ll be able to use different transformers and voltages to run them at. And you’ll be able to put different switches on it to turn on and off.
    It’ll wind up being an app you buy for $25.
