By the way Lakan didn't know he was going to be gone for that long and his family may have limited his contact by how he never learned of Fengxian's situation despite her writing letters as Dani said. He also couldn't just go back home either as that would be seen as deserting and likely would've been punished for doing so. One detail not included in the anime is that the old lady of the Verdigris house is actually Fengxian's mother which would sort of explain why she hated Lakan so much. I'm not trying to justify her actions she definitely should've told Lakan but in her perspective he got her daughter pregnant resulting in the offers to be cancelled and ruining Fenxian's as well as the Verdigris house's reputation to severely plummet forcing her and likely the other courtesans to have to take on any customer to make ends meet and resulting in her daughter contracting syphilis. Also Luomen (Mao Mao's adoptive father) could have actually treated Fengxian during the early stages of the disease but the Verdigris house didn't trust him enough to treat her until it was too late. Y'all were right though both Lakan and Fengxian messed up and their situation may have been different if they just communicated more.

Lakan couldn't visit the annex which is where the mother was kept and where Maomao would hide when Lakan is around. No one told Lakan that Fengxian was still at the house so he has no idea where she is or if she is alive.
Jinshi and Maomao are the same age. At the beginning of the series, they mentioned that Maomao was 17. By the time we learned Jinshi's age (that he was 19), that was already 2 years after the start of the series, so Maomao would also have been 19 by then. Regarding the small piece next to Fengxian's dried up finger, remember that we saw a flashback from Maomao of when she was a little girl where her mother was crouching over her and holding a knife. And remember also that Maomao made an off-hand comment (I think it was to Jinshi, but I don't remember the exact episode), that the fingertip can grow back somewhat if it was severed when the child is very young. And Maomao keeps looking at her pinky finger which, if you look closely, you'll notice that the fingernail is somewhat crooked.
No jinshi is 19 and she is 18. There is not much between them . Also yes this ep is connected with the swap babies . It's the same timeline . When feng was pregnant ah dou and the empress had there sons.
I love the touch in Novels that wasn't very much showed in anime: Fengxian was so high courtesan, that on first meeting you won't even hear her voice. That's why she was whispering to Meimei.
He left not knowing about Fengxian and while he like her he was enjoying his new duties and failed to have ANY communications with her. Fengxian did try to communicate with him but the letters were blocked. Her pride was deeply hurt and her value plummeted taking the Brothel reputation with it. She chose to become a courtesan who took any and all clients to punish herself as well as stone to the brothel. She saw Maomao as the cause of her prideful fall and asked that no one know about her situation especially Lakan and Maomao. The brothel madam furious with the callous disregard of Lakan and she cherished Fengxian. With the younger princesses especially Meimei who cherished Fengxian and their new little sister Maomao, the secret was kept especially from Lakan. They all honored Fengxian’s hurt pride demands to keep everything hidden but also realized her hurt pride was compounding the tragedy. In the end, the loving angel of Lakan, Fengxian, and Maomao struggled with the tragic losses the Fengxian had demanded. I hope Meimei the greatest heroine and loving woman eventually gets a happy ending.
For reference, the main sort of distilled hard liquor that would've been present in China in earlier centuries (called baijiu, made from sorghum) is very much an acquired taste. In terms of bracing, stiff taste, more on the level of straight bourbon whiskey than, say, vodka. If Lakan wasn't used to booze, he wouldn't have liked the taste
I think you are right in pointing out that there is a lack of communication. But even if Lacan wrote the letter from his study abroad, I don't know if the letter was mediated by a family member who disliked brothels. And in fact, she did send the finger, but it didn't get through to Lacan. It is likely that Lacan's family interfered with the communication. It's a tragedy, that's all I can say. It was also triggered by the matter of Jinshi's birth, No wonder Lacan is so hard on Jinshi.
Is she? She's a shrewd businesswoman and product of her age and environment. Yet, after Fengxian contracted her illness she took care of her for years, while usually a disgraced courtesan (well, now effectively a prostitute) would be chased out to the streets. She also took in Maomao and gave her a home and a family. It's not black and white.
The old lady didn't do anything wrong. Fengxian cut off her own finger and the finger of her infant child to curse Lakan. Fengxian was angry and I'm sure expressed a hatred for Lakan by that point. The old lady had no reason to think putting them in the same room would ever be a good idea. Fengxian is not passive at that point in time. It's only in the recent years that she would have deteriorated to such a degree as to be bed ridden and non-responsive. Maomao says Fengxian used to hatefully chase her away. She was angry and violent. If she did want to see Lakan at all she would have been hiding those feelings behind a layer of pride and hurt and that would never let them be seen.
I want an abridged version of the chess game where Maomao states the small bottle contains Iocaine powder. Always reminded of Wesley and Vizzini playing the drinking game of death in Princess Bride.
I don't see how that is related. It was the bad timing without which Luomen (presumably) could have saved Ah-Duo from losing her Uterus and thus her getting the idea of switching the babies which got Luomen to be expelled for not noticing.

In hindsight, the low-key evil one was the Old Lady that runs the Verdigris House. She hid Fengxian from Lakan knowing he'd happily buy her out, and also allowed Fengxian to believe she'd been abandoned. And even at the end didn't want them to meet.

I don't think the old lady is a villain in this tragedy. Faced with financial difficulties due to Lakan, she had no choice but to keep Fonshen working despite the risk of syphilis.
Remember that Fengxian was remarked by Lakan to have a personality that was almost pure pride or something to that effect. I don't think she needed to be forced in anyway. I think she would have had the attitude of having put herself in the situation doing what needed to be done. I don't think her pride would have let her not earn her keep.
She gave birth to maomao, became very ill, and was no longer able to get customers, but the old lady still took care of her. Then the doctor took maomao in. Or do I have my scenarios wrong? 😭
