A beautiful combination of traditional Japanese music and contemprary western music! I would say absolutely other-worldly in its depth and width. Painfully beautiful and gripping, yet soft and gentle, yet majestic but so so so close to the heart it is close to ones grave… This is beauty.
This has to be one of the most unusual yet remarkable violin concertos ever written. No showmanship from the soloist necessary as this hypnotic work needs none of it. Each note eventually becomes more important than the last. Amazing. A silent audience is needed to perform this piece or some idiot who should have stayed at home will ruin it completely.
Somei Satoh (佐藤聰明 Satō Sōmei?); (born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, January 19, 1947) is a Japanese composer of contemporary traditional music (gendai hōgaku). His compositions mix Japanese court music with European romanticism and electronic music.[1] He studied at Nihon University of Art in the early 1970s[2] and is primarily self-taught in composition. He wrote his violin concerto for Anne Akiko Meyers. He currently[when?] lives in Tokyo.
Charmante & profonde musique brillante de mille feux sous la couche du temps perdu, magnifiquement jouée, ravissant tous les sens !! Merci pour ce contenu précieux
Very interesting work. I really like it! At times tho there's that heartbeat. I wish that wasn't there. I'm listening with headphones and it makes me feel like my blood pressure is too high.
you have to work to hear this. this is the fifth or sixth time I've listened and today is first time I was able to follow the arc. it is very beautiful, butnot relaxing. itis tense, on the verge of something and then withdraws, very challenging. some joy more loneliness. it does not reach the stark desolation of schnittke. as we move to finale it is uplifting not ebullient and then fades. peace out.
@@enriquesanchez2001 : It is true, but here the characteristic humorous element of John Cage is missing. In my opinion, this composer is closer to Morton Feldman, and both, Feldman and Cage, to Erwin Schulhoff (e.g. "in Futurum")
Guauuu!!! Muy interesante trabajo. La escucha atenta de esta obra te trasporta a dimensiones superiores de la conciencia, donde el silencio se presenta como lo misterioso tremendus et fascinans!!!
Thank you ... I was going to write a letter for a friend and listen to something whilst writing , but this piece became the centre of my moments , could not write anymore , the music over took me completely with its presence , the tympani which beats like heart beat all the way through , so rich , kind and peaceful ... Somei Satoh you have reached the enlightenment , Zen is in shining in your music ...
yeah, there is no relaxing while this is playing, all my focus is on it! such a great concert! I will relax eventually after I listened to it 10 times more :D
Less is More! I couldn't help think the colors and shapes of the music are just like Hokusai. This is beautiful stuff. God bless TH-cam because I found this by chance. Pass the saki. I'm staying for dinner....
In the first part of this song, I imagine someone hiding behind a wall peering at something, maybe a large hall, and then something very sinister moves by.
Somei Sato, violin concerto(2002), dedicated to Anne Akiko Meyers. Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra conducted by Tetsuji Honna.Cover image is by Hokusai(1760~1849),world famous Ukiyoe painter.
MGH cnsGABA I am very proud that Anne Akiko Meyers lives in our beloved city " Austin " . She has a very distinct sound, I can immediately tell that it is " her " when I hear her playing. After terrible two storms, " HARVEY" and " IRMA " this music was so calming, peaceful, poignant and beautiful. Thank you.
God... If wish I could watch this in concert... I wish this was in a concert, and I had money. Never in my life I thought this kind of style could be so good and interesting. At the same time, it was also a bit creepy; It messed up my sense of time temporarily. When I reached the end, I saw the time counter and I feel like the time was ticking twice as fast as usual.
The japanese label Camerata has a CD with this on it. The title is "Kisetsu. Works by Somei Satoh" (CMCD-28032). More info can be found for example on discogs.
thank you , I am so touched with his composition and the sensetive performence , so unusuall to have so much silence ... doe sany one knows what was satoh inspiration behind this when he compose it for the vilonist ?
As the Earth recedes, where is this "thing" going? I believe a man made object just recently escaped our solar system. Will it ever encounter anything else? Wandering for Eternity? Maybe the Universe has more "nothing" than "something."
Further: Will Entropy, or Gravity ultimately win out? If Gravity rules, this "thing" will encounter something else and accrue to its being. If "Entropy" rules, this "thing" will wander forever.

Your heart is beautiful

it is absolutely beautiful, Somei Satoh's imagination is beyond this life.

You are right.
I liked how silence sounded like music in this concerto. Amazing!
John Cage said so. ♥

all is breathing.. this is stunningly astonishing.
Such an atmosphere, super! Thank you so much for sharing!
So beautiful, magnificent. I will carry this in my heart for a long time. It is what one hopes that music can attain. Thank you!
i really love the picture
Each time I listen to this piece, it sounds more incandescent.
Thank you, this is thrilling music. The last "message" of this concerto beginning somewhere around 23 00 is so touching. Beautiful.
It is a wonderful musical work and performance!
I have to focus on this instead of relaxing to this. It is very interesting, like trying to understand music all over again.
Very perceptive comment.
Fine distinction.
Good point.
Thank you.
I will now think about it while listening
(not "relax into it")

El silencio como elemento discursivo. Hermoso.
i love the stuff you post. thank you

Magnifique merci
the first part is beautiful, but then it becomes soporific !

wow. this is well done. sounds very original.
This is wonderful music, so glad to have discovered this composer, thank you for posting! I feel like I hear more of Gorecki than Rhim.
I always use music to bury my pain. This time I wanted music that could help me understand and confront it. Thank you for giving me just that.
No, thank YOU for the personal narrative. Sheds a whole new light on this composition, and music in general!
In the first part of this song, I imagine someone hiding behind a wall peering at something, maybe a large hall, and then something very sinister moves by.
Thanks, I've discovered wonderful music
thanks...

Who is Wolfgang Rhim
Great piece. It's a shame that I haven't been able to get on cd, and it isn't on any music streaming service. Thanks for sharing it!
.... and I found home - Nu Mo :)
This is amazing.
I can hear the violin breathing.
I think I should apologize to Somei Satoh, for thinking that he was a inferior composer (30 years ago, it may be)
Was able to find it on the net. It seems it's by Hokusai - no surprise. But this image is mounted on a scroll, it seems? Lovely work.
can't find a record , there must be one !
There is a Japanese release, which also includes Kisetsu and Kyokoku.
The japanese label Camerata has a CD with this on it. The title is "Kisetsu. Works by Somei Satoh" (CMCD-28032). More info can be found for example on discogs.
Violin solo accompanied by bass drum... so unusual.
My friend brought me here

Who is Rhim
Very much like Rim's style...any note and jumping any time to the next...
It's Rihm
Who is Rihm
One hears the living pulse of music. Eerily profound and intense in its purity, it is almost uncomfortable to listen.

Love the painting - who is it by and from when? Anyone?

not to be uncouth but who in fact is playing violin?
Anne Akiko Meyers
