I'd like to share something with you if I may. What you're doing with your farm is nothing short of a amazing. I'm gonna retire from what I do and this is what I want to do. I currently have my own little garden forming. I work hard on it daily and I absolutely enjoy every moment of it. I don't have much family support but if I was never inspired I most certainly am now. Thank you Mrs. H🤗🌱❤️

This made me smile for you. I've lost ALL my garlic. I have a lot of moles and voles and think they got it. I have the biggest groundhog I've ever seen. I named him Chubbs. We are fighting over my potatoes. My hubby cut his hair last night so I put it around my potatoes. My brother taught me that one. Greetings from Tennessee

I love the way you use leaves and stuff to build your soil. I have a friend who raises angus bulls and hes happy to give me truck loads anytime i want. That hiw i have built my main beds. But also, my husband dies dialysis at hime and i also have a glut of heavy duty cardboard boxes. I open them up and lay them between the beds and in places i dont want to walk in mud when it rains. I out them down in thr fall after cleaning out dead plants. Then around February or March, when im excited to get into the garden, i will lay more out. The cardboard was coming apart last week, so i laid down new cardboard to make a new clean path. You would not believe how much soft black soil it makes! I will go around a scoop it up when i needs to top things off or add back into the beds.

My garlic died this year because of the weather we had. Cold, hot , cold, warm and finally cold. By the time real cold got here in December my garlic was up about 4 inches.
What a beautiful garlic harvest you got.

I'm wondering if those side shoots are the "CORMS"-(seeds) that garlic forms?? They usually form on the sides of the garlic and can be planted to make a new garlic plant. Some break off and get left in the soil & will grow as well.
Something that I do that I've not seen ANYONE else do when harvesting garlic is I cut the garlic bulbs off the stalks leaving approximately 2 inches of the stem on the garlic bulb. I do this with my onions, too. They both are laid out to "cure" and form the paper skins that protect the garlic. I then clean all the stalks, remove the dead parts then wash well. Then I chop the stems/leaves and dehydrate them to use in soups/stews or have even made leek/garlic-like soup from the larger white part of the stems. I always add garlic to my leek soup anyway and by using the white of the garlic stems gives a wonderful fresh garlic taste to the soup. By cutting off the stems (you've got to leave at least 2 inches of it on the garlic bulbs), did not affect the quality nor taste of my garlic bulbs/cloves and they cured as they should to form the paper skins.
I'm a senior on social security and can't afford to waste anything I can use for food so I tried it and it worked well so I continued to do it. I've been afraid to mention it on any YT channel fearing I would get crazy flack from people saying the stems/leaves HAVE to be left on for it to cure properly.
I'll even go one further. I also cut the roots off, leaving a bit on the bulb, wash them well, and cook with them, too. I've even dehydrated them to use later as you get a LOT of them with a large garlic harvest. They have a mild garlic flavor that is perfect in recipes if you want a garlic flavor that isn't overwhelming. I love garlic and use it in almost everything I cook. I was curious about eating/cooking with garlic roots so I looked it up on the internet. Would you believe that some chefs actually do use garlic roots in some of their special cuisines??? So I wasn't so crazy after all. I also looked up if you could cure garlic without the entire stalk/stem and YES YOU CAN. You just leave at least 2 inches of the stem on the bulb & cure. It is a lot of extra work to clean, wash & chop up all those stems but once you try the garlic/leek soup from the fresh garlic white stem or use a handful or two of the dehydrated stems/leaves in a soup or stew, you will never let another one go to waste by leaving them on the bulb to cure. Look it up. It is on the internet as well as using garlic roots to cook with.
For the new gardeners out there, if you leave your garlic in the ground too long it will rot, especially if you have a lot of rain in the spring like we do here in coastal AL. I left a few smaller garlic in the ground hoping they would grow a bit more when I harvested what was ready and they didn't grow any more and the bulb ROTTED or was soft, mushy & unusable. The stem was still there but pulled right out of the rotted bulb. I discovered the smaller garlic were the small cloves that I planted (as I said earlier, I don't like to waste anything) and they just don't grow as big as the larger cloves. Now I know 1st hand why people say to choose & use the largest of the cloves to plant...because they give you the largest garlic bulbs at harvest
Thank you, Mrs. "H" for a great video! I ALWAYS look for all new videos you put up. Even tho I've gardened over 30+ years, I ALWAYS learn something new & beneficial from you & Mr. "H"! Love y'all!

I forget too! I bought a digital file off ETSY for a garden journal/diary. It has been awesome. I print the pages off my own computer and put that days gardening information and I purchased a Homestead digital file and keep track of my chickens and other farm animals. Information like immunization for the dogs…worm medicine for the dogs and even my chickens. It has a page for types of issues that come up on a homestead and how you solved or not solved the problem so that next year you have something to look back on…Garden issues, Milk issues, animal issues, canning issues , freeze drying etc…just about anything that comes up on a homestead. It only cost 6.00…that was a sale price…there are more less expensive digital file journals and even greater price ones…pick what you need.

I've been watching your channel for a very long time. Idk why but it just showed I was unsubscribed? I thought I was subscribed. You a ways come up on my feed. Well I resubscibed!! I live in Arizona and it gets HOT 🔥 here. You inspired me last year to get growing! I have some injuries that prevents me from digging in the ground so went planting into containers. Last year I harvested at least 50 eggplants! But I failed miserably growing the squash. Then I watched yours and saw how large they can get. I was putting FOUR plants in each pot causing the squash to be stunted. This year im at it again with ONE plant per pot and they are huge! Growing them vertically with tomato cages. No bugs! Zilch. But like you I had issues with eggplant this year. THANK YOU for showing all of us that we too can do this! I did get so inspired that this year I went into the ground with many veggies, potatoes and onions, and more. It was hard but its so nice. This is great! I call it EDEN2 !! I walk through it several times everyday thanking God for his blessings. Wait til we get to heaven and have the most perfect gardens! You will join me for lunch! Pick a perfect peach too!! Blessings my brother & my sister H. Many blessings and many thanks 😊 🙏

Those garlic bulbs are so fat and pretty! I can't wait to harvest mine, in a little bit of a colder region so I probably have another month but they grew pretty fast here too. . It looks like you let the soil be pretty dry before harvesting. I'll have to remember that this year, it looks way easier. I had some garlic cloves at another spot that apparently I forgot and they were bunched together and grew to look like scallions. Apparently they're also delicious that way so it will be exciting to try them in cooking. Thank you so much as always for sharing.

Save your best garlic clones to plant during next Fall. But before replanting them in that garden spot I would apply an entire bale of peat moss and work it into the soil to make it more porous and light so that the garlic can develop each clove more full and even. Very nice. I love growing garlic because once it is in the ground it pretty much takes care of itself all Winter and into Spring.

@@el_israel60 : actually, it's so easy that it's a bit embarrassing.. I take a garlic and break away several cloves, remove the paper and keep the pointy part upward, let it grow...haven't harvested yet, but, they have sprouted greens...look like scallions. Sometimes I have found that my store garlic sits too long in my crock and starts a green growth...so, it's a jump start for a plant. This is my first year trying this..will know probably in a few months...just a fun thing to do. Also plant my 'white ends' of scallions..already have roots when you buy them..all planted and now I harvest easily for additions to my dishes and platings....free groceries!!

  • @kathygarner419

Mrs. H: The second growth you are experiencing may have been caused by weather conditions where you get a few very warm days in the winter then another cold spell or by uneven rain. When we have crazy weather it fools the plants into thinking it is spring and then winter too close together. It may also be caused by waiting a little too long to harvest. I have experienced something similar in my keeping onions for storage. The harvest looks really good enjoy it.

Hi Homestead Heart, You and Mr. H are such a joy to watch and learn from in the gardening adventure. Thank you for the presentations and hard work that will pay dividends for future generations.
I always save the biggest and best bulb for the next planting season of garlic. Started out with a grocery store bought bulb years ago and have seen an increase of size and flavor over the years as my soil improves. It turned out to be a soft neck variety. I have a fact sheet printed out from our online County Extension office (free of charge). It has the instructions for recommended variety, soil prep, how/when to plant and harvest/storage for our grow zone(7a and 7b). We live right at the middle of those 2 zones. Every state has a County Extension office they can tap into for great info about their grow zone(s).
I tried the hard neck variety once(also grocery store bought), but the soft necks do so much better here.

I just love your channel! Blessings! I live in the mountains of Utah, 7,000 ft above sea level and I planted 350 cloves of hard neck garlic in November. In fact we had 7” of snow last week but it’s in the 70’s now and the garlic is exploding nicely. Last year I did 120 garlic and it was so successful so I’m over did it this time. Curing is key.

Hi, Homestead Heart! I'm fairly new to your channel but I've watch a handful and I'm Loving it!!! I was thinking about your dilemma of not knowing what variety of garlic that you planted in your raised beds. If you begin each planting season with a Grid Paper Notebook 📒, you could take it out with you when you go to plant the bulbs/seeds etc. Just draw a rectangle, 1 square by 2 squares, to represent your raised bed. Write down the variety on the lines below or in side margin. Also, you could give each raised bed a # number. It would keep you more organized and you wouldn't have to rely on your memory! The following year you could look back in the notebook and rotate your crops, knowing what you had planted there the prior year! 👍🏼😃😉

When we plant ours in October/November, we place about 6 inches of straw over them. After the scapes come on, we remove those and feed and water really good and wait until July to harvest. This year we fed with 10-10-10 every 4 weeks. Ours are still going strong here in PA.

I was watching the cardboard potato haul and did a search ( I remember watching you plant those red potatoes). Then searched and found this. Ran to my small garlic bed and ended up pulling them all immediately per your advice on the look of lower stem leaves. Mine are small with scapes. Imma work with these and try again next season. My first, won't be my last time 😊😊
