Sims 1
Picnic baskets were introduced in The Sims: Hot Date, but they are not portable. Sims can rent a picnic basket from kiosks in Downtown. They cost §99. After renting, then your sim will pick a random empty spot to set up a blue checkered picnic blanket. When two Sims are on a picnic, they will chill on the blanket lying down. Sims can eat sandwiches together, they can kiss on the blanket and they can chat and change the topic several times. The amount of food you can eat from one picnic basket is limited. At first the picnic basket will appear full, then it will be half full and after several sandwiches the basket will be empty.
Sims 3
Unlike The Sims 1, picnic baskets are portable object in The Sims 3. When you buy the picnic basket, you can place it almost everywhere. I mean, everywhere. Ghost can also come and enjoy the picnic. You'll be charged §100 every time you want to serve. They have a hunger rating of 4, and Sims can only eat from them if it's been opened, with a checkered blanket underneath. When Sims are alone, they can sit on the blanket, or eat food. If Sims are not vegetarian, they will randomly pick a hot dog or a hamburger. Vegetarian Sims will eat Grilled Cheese or Peanut Butter And Jelly
After a while ants will show up to and take your food. Unfortunately, you can actually do less things than in The Sims 1 while on the picnic blanket. You can only chat and eat food. No kissing.
Sims 4
Picnic baskets made a comeback in The Sims 4: Cottage Living. There are two picnic baskets available. Unlike the previous Sims games, in The Sims 4, many types of food can be packed into a basket, both purchased food and homemade food. But up to 4 foods can be placed into the basket. Unlike the previous Sims games, Sims can't sit on a picnic blanket. The picnic basket need to be placed on any picnic table. after you've placed the picnic basket, you can serve the food you've packed. Like in The Sims 3, Sims will eat out of a plate. You can call everyone to meal and grab a serving together and socialize as usual.

In the Sims 3 you can also place the basket on a picnic table. It will spread the blanket on top of it. Quite cute imo :)
Yes there are more ways. I always preferred the one on the ground ❤️❤️
They should have invented a cool bag where you could put inventory food in there.
In typical sims 4 fashion. 1 step forward (we can choose our meals) but 2 steps backs (no blankets)
I agree with you and noticed this a lot on things, like with the diving board in sims 1, 2, and 3 but a diving platform in sims 4. Seemed kinda odd to me. XD

I love the Sims 1 picnics so much. They are very romantic and cozy.
Hot Date was one of my favorite Sims 1 EP's. You could do so many cute things when on dates :) I loved when you could get ice cream cones with your date too!!!
I remember Sims 1 sims made those sandwiches sound really good. I always wanted to make a sandwich after taking my sims on a picnic lol

Sims 3 picnic option is by far the best for me, since you can picnic literally everywhere, I especially like to do it in gyms or on parking lots 😂😂😂 That game is so hilariously unhinged
Sims 1 is unfortunately limited to the Hot Date parks, and Sims 4 to the benches.

I never saw the ants from 3 before! I think the Sims 1 options were cutest since you could be all romantic on the blanket - 3's portability is great. I'm still not sure what the point of the picnic basket is in 4 it doesn't do much special

sims 4 is just set dressing.
They just sit on a table an eat like they do anywhere else.
Sims 1 did it best and Sims 3 had a lot of charm in it too with the ants and details.

I think Sims 3 wins here. It's nice that the concept of personal space is actually addressed there unlike with Sims 1 plus the ant colony taking your food away is adorable. It's surprising that with all the pests that exist in the sims 1 ants and other such creatures were not given animations taking your food away in that iteration of the game. Would've been very fitting.
Saddest things about picnics in the sims:
-Sims 1 lets you kiss on it, but doesn't let you woohoo on the blanket.
-Sims 2 doesn't have picnics at all.
-Neither sims 2, 3, or 4 made picnics into the family affair they tend to be in real life.
-After the Sims 1 didn't feature it, neither the Sims 3 or the Sims 4 took the opportunity to add woohoo to the equation. It's so common to see people get it on both on the blanket or on the picnic table in real life. It would be nice to see a version of the sims finally reflect that.
Learning that the sims 2 lacks something that the sims 4 has even if the sims 4 doesn't have the best version of said thing is always just a little bit awkward.

S3 sims would join and you could "ask to join" so it was very social. If your sim was hungry they could help themselves to someone's basket, sit and visit, increase relationship.
Ughhh, those ants in TS3 are always soo annoying themselves when my very own sims couple goes together on an picnic together, i really hate it 😂
In The Sims 1, you know Mrs. Crumplebottom was about to yell at her for sitting like that while wearing a dress

In Sims 3 up to 4 Sims can sit on the blanket and eat so it works well for outings :) Sims 1 wins for the kissing, also in Sims 1 they can makeout and rub lotion on one another if they're on a beach towel :D I was so sad when those animations were taken away in later games. Sad that Sims 2 had no picnics, I don't have an opinion on Sims 4 picnics because I've never tried one lol but will have to now. I have a Grandpa Sim who can take his grandkids out on a beach picnic once he makes some food :D I'm sad that it can't be placed on the ground like in 1 & 3.

I really wanted the picnic basket back in Sims2. I had to download a non functional picnic basket for photo shoots. Sims 1 wins again, because I could get so many romantic pictures for storytelling.

As usual, Sims 4 just taking the laziest, easiest, most unimaginative and uninteresting way out. Sims 1's picnic is best. It was an actual gameplay item.

It looks like there was plenty of space to randomly walk around but it looks like the townies intentionally walked directly at the picnic blanket on purpose! Or maybe you happen to choose the spot where most people walk on or the townies automatically wanted to interact with your sim? Agnes looks like she really wanted to talk to the sim.

Picnic baskets in the sims 4 r so bad. The only plus is the fact that you can make ur own food to put in it.
That particular Sims 1 kiosk is so buggy. If you’re lucky you’ll get what you want from it right away but most of the time it times out and drops from the queue and the kiosk guy just stands around outside it or is sitting in the window like he’s got nothing to do yet there’s sims waiting in line to rent from him. Always drives me crazy. 😂

This is the first time I chose Sims 1 as a winner. Had way more options regards features and interactions. Sims 3 were ok. Sims 4... As always, couldn't make a simple blanket feature with proper interaction animations.
S4 sims smile and contort their face too much and if they get the cheerful trait they constantly have a stupid laugh at everything until I want to kill them. EA thought they were giving them "emotion", probably to distract from removing the actual gameplay we had in 1, 2 & 3.
sims 4 is the superior here because u have to put the food inside instead of magically purchasing the food.

Look at the ants in good ole Sims 3... Not only are they there, they carry off food! Amazing! It's so sad to see small things like this die out in the Sims 4. Too cosmetic. I would say give me Sims 4 graphics, Sims 3 gameplay, Sims 2 detail... But as I replay my games I find personally the Sims 2 has the most detail. The furniture is so unique and detailed... Might not be 4k kind of shizz but it has the details there, the interactions with objects, and customization of furniture... Sims 4 seems too sleek and cheaply looking, very Pixar in a bad way if that makes sense... Sims 3 had the it factor, open world we craved to its ability at the time, and crazy gameplay details...
How are games getting worse … shouldn’t they be getting better. Same with movies haven’t watched a good movie since 2020
Because of stingy business practices that unfortunately are reinforced by the majority of consumers.
Smaller companies have employees which are more likely to be passionate about the product because they have more control over their process. Big companies have more employees but therefore each individual employee has less control and is just a cog. Cogs don't have a soul, which is why games end up soulless. That is why movies, video games etc... are lacking in quality. Note that the best games that are coming out are made from indie developers or smaller companies, that's why sims 1/2 were so good back in the day.

If you can't place the blanket and have an actual picnic, it's not even relevant. Why have the basket at all? You can very easily just take a meal in your pants and do the same thing. Just seems very cheap and very sims 4. They recycle all of their animations anyway so why not recycle that? I also hate the snatch and grab for sims 4, at least in sims 3 you can see them placing the giant basket in their pants, which is funny.
Also I think the sims 3 doesn't get enough credit for how funny it is. The music is god awful, but it really does have some of that old humor 1&2 have in spades.

One of the rare instances where I actually prefer TS4, purely because of the part where you can pack your own food. It adds so much realism. The no blanket thing sucks but I can live with it
